Pikman Posted June 5, 2025 Posted June 5, 2025 MK is weirdly different?! Weapons auto-hold behind you, which is nice but needs relearning - It's a good leveller though and will mean our kids don't have such a disadvantage. Feels a bit slow to me (started with 150cc, but this feels closer to 75). The grinding is annoying, it doesn't seem to need any skill and can mean you miss things you want to collect next to a rail. Maybe I need to learn something new? I really don't understand why it was added yet. Looks lovely, runs super smoothly so far! Does not seem to top MK8 yet (although I'm only 1 GP in!).
mfnick Posted June 5, 2025 Posted June 5, 2025 It sure is more MK. But slower. Or at least feels it. Happy they got rid of the anti grav & under water stuff. Turning into jet skis similar to Somic Racing Transformed is loads better. Free Roam is too aimless for me. I’ve really quite enjoyed the P switch challenges I’ve come across so far but actually finding them isn’t enjoyable or fun IMO. Gave Knockout a go online. Cant fault the performance, really impressive. But it’s way too chaotic. Reminded me of that bad Sonic Crossworlds demo. Found it was better to hang back as well (which never feels good) until near the end of the sections then use a good item it gives you to plow in front. Made it to the end everytime so far using this technique.
mfnick Posted June 6, 2025 Posted June 6, 2025 Why the hell in this day and age can’t I remap the buttons in game? Holding A to accelerate is unnatural and painful as fuck. I’ve turned on auto accelerate but that’s fucking me up in free roam. Anyone know if it’s beneficial to do the jump boost on those looooooong, slooooow straights? I can’t tell. Also is there a way to make the characters STFU?! Shy Guy is my man but the constant fucking noises, aaaahhhh!!
Pikman Posted June 6, 2025 Author Posted June 6, 2025 I mean... A=accelerate and B=brake, everyone knows that 😅 I do know what you mean though and I don't understand why they can't offer this. Surely it should come as an update, the older 'virtual' games all have it! Our kids are LOVING the free roam and it made me think that this is what/who it's for. Our daughter isn't a gamer, she struggles with the controls, but she cannot put this down! I guess one day once she's confident she might experiment with the main modes. Free roam seems very secondary too, the fact that it's not in the main list, it's really an add-on. How do you mean by jump boost on long straights? Like the olden days when we used to zig zag all the way?

No it’s different. If you hold jump/drift while straight it primes a boost jump. I can’t tell if priming slows you down though, negating the boost it give you. & yea you’re probably right wrt to free roam. It feels very secondary & almost pointless but for kids I imagine it’ll be brilliant & doing its job. Maybe they shouldn’t have made it the main thing in promotion though.
Maryokutai Posted June 6, 2025 Posted June 6, 2025 You can always remap controls on the system level. It can be a bit annoying to switch back and forth when booting different games, but if you hate it that much it's probably worth it still. I did that for Crash Team Racing, which had accelerate on those super slim upper shoulder buttons for some reason, very uncomfortable.

I'll have to try after work, that is new to me! It is totally weird how they promoted free roam so much, agreed. The kids really have a total blast with it but I don't really know why, they aren't doing anything. 1

Yea I couldn’t be arsed doing that but if it’s the only way… Come on Hori, hurry up with a new split pad!
spatular Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 not played much yet, just did a few single player cups, was good fun, looks really nice too. and a really quick go of the open world, found a few blue switch challenges, was pretty fun, but could imagine it could be boring if i'd already done/couldn't find any challenges to do. can't really compare it to 8 as haven't played that in a long time.
shinymcshine Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 Any idea how I set up an original NS joycon so I can play 3 player local head to head please ? Pretty sure I'd read when they announced the NS2 you'd be able to do this, just can't see how to in the various MKW or NS2 system menus...!?!? UPDATED - success (forgot all about the tiny sync button )
mfnick Posted June 7, 2025 Posted June 7, 2025 Driving between courses on long boring roads & only doing 1 lap on the actual interesting & designed tracks in Grand Prix is a really shit choice.
Maf Posted June 8, 2025 Posted June 8, 2025 The battle royale mode is fucking brilliant. Even watching it can be so intense.
spatular Posted June 8, 2025 Posted June 8, 2025 I’m really liking this, at first it was yeah it’s a new Mario kart, playing through the Grand Prix mode, the tracks are cool, the handling is pretty good, it’s a solid fun game. But then tried some time trials and that’s where the spark is for me, time trials are so good, following the staff ghosts gives you some hints as to some shortcuts, some normal ones like boosting across the grass and some new ones in this it can be a bit like a parkour driving game, grinding rails, wall riding, hopping between these gives you boosts, there’s some really cool stuff you can do. the open world stuff there are some cool challenges to do, some easy some really hard, one took me like 20 goes jumping between container walls, it sort of teaches you how to do the wall riding. downloaded a top ghost for one track trying to follow a jump onto a wall for a shortcut and I don’t want to admit how long I was trying this, maybe 2 hours, and I did improve my time by 5 seconds or so on that track but did not once do this wall jump thing properly. been doing the knockout events too, think those are the ones with some longer straight bits that could be a bit boring but I’ve not found it too bad, good fun really, struggling with these though, got all golds at 150cc on Grand Prix reasonably easy (hope there’s a harder mode to unlock?) but these I am not winning. 2
Maf Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 The items seemed nerfed in this game. I’ve seen people hit other players in front of them with shells and they tumble forward and don’t lose their place. Also the lightning change where it only effects people in front is cool, but it lasts no time at all.
Maryokutai Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 I saw people dodge the blue shell by tapping the rewind button, which I thought was hilarious. Only works in single player but if that isn't some kind of unintentional middle finger towards the most egregious item ever invented I don't know. 1
Nigel Tufnell Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Drifting feels off, while doing long turns on MK8 i could pick up many coins in a row, i can't seem to do that as easily here, if there are 3 coins in a row i'll be lucky to pick up one, we started on the 100cc grand prix, if you get gold it shows that you have also achieved gold on 50cc, can't remember that being a thing in the older games.
Maf Posted June 9, 2025 Posted June 9, 2025 Wow the time trials really put those new mechanics to work
Maf Posted June 11, 2025 Posted June 11, 2025 Knockout Tour is the video game equivalent of chaos theory
Pikman Posted June 12, 2025 Author Posted June 12, 2025 I did a MooMoo Farm time trial at the mention of them above, deffo enjoyable. @spatular it reminds me of trying to beat your Forza (3?) times back in the day I hope we can try each other's ghosts, so far I only saw the Nintendo one and also my own. Edit: I don't think we can choose 'friend's' ghosts, there seems to just be a list of the top times to compete against. 1
