That hdr vid someone posted helped a lot. Looks lush now and not slightly washed out.

I’ve not actually played mk much yet because I got my wife animal crossing for her birthday and I got nostalgia and bought it on my shiny new switch 2 and have been mostly on that. Can’t wait to unlock to be able to go to her island and vice versa.

I’ve also just bought hit man on switch 2 while watching the tcgs talks over of game fest then it came up as 007 dlc is coming to it ❤️

My pro controller and camera arrive tomorrow too.

NS2 finally arrived around 1815 hrs yesterday (from Amazon) !

I'd also ordered a pair of MK NS2 wheels from Nintendo, they'd arrived on Thursday.

Set it up this morning, and everything in great.

So what are your overall impressions of the system so far? If I had to make a quick pro-con list I'd say:

+ Very sturdy build quality, the system feels rather 'premium' ;

+ A bit more ergonomic in handheld mode due to its size ;

+ Magnetic joycon attachments are rock solid and due to their nature won't ever deteriorate (though getting them off is a bit flimsy still) ;

+ Joycons are improved, buttons and sticks feel better ;

+ Screen is really good, even though I can't for the life of me tell what HDR does ;

+ Even on my 1080p TV the image quality is noticeably better and sharper than Switch 1, all the way down to the system menus ;

+ Backwards compatibility significantly better than expected. Random games just straight up run better out of the gate ;

+ eShop is significantly faster and you can filter your wishlist and only show games on sale.

- I think DF was onto something when they were skeptical about handheld mode performance. It's obviously early days, but due to how large and high quality the screen is, it can't really hide its visual shortcomings as much as Switch 1 did and the differences between both modes are quite apparent, in FAST Fusion at least ;

- WiFi still as garbage as on Switch 1. My laptop shows 5/5 bars and the Switch 2 lying right next to it just goes 'nah, no wifi here my man' ;

- Despite the better ergonomics I actually think the system is a bit too large and would have preferred something closer to the OLED in overall dimensions ;

- Screenshots are only getting saved in some reduced 1080p JPEG format and look pretty bad ;

- While the eShop is fast, it's still getting flooded with Switch 1 shovelware crap with AI thumbnails. Needs a filter ASAP, because it's just a bad look for a new system ;

 - Again eShop, but I think upgrades for games shouldn't be reflected in the charts tab. Right now both Zelda games are pushing out games from the toplist that might need the visibility.

Overall I'm quite happy with it, even though the software situation is a bit dire at the moment and I remain wary of how the whole Key Card thing is going to evolve. That said, this looks really neat on it:

I can’t get the hdr right, the first screen the right snowflake just won’t fade at all…seems my older Samsung has a game mode that seems to be better than me tinkering so left it at that.

Played more Mario kart yesterday, actually enjoy playing this, definitely one I will put time in, will go back to Zelda at some point.

Some Bayonetta 3 footage around the 6:10 minute mark. The short version is that it is now a locked 60fps across the board, with the only downside being that handheld mode still looks extremely blurry because it doesn't use dynamic resolution. Though honestly this is not the kind of game I'd want to play on a handheld with Joycons anyway.

I never played this actually so this might be a great opportunity to finally give it a shot (it's not that I wasn't interested but it came out at a weird time).

On the HDR stuff, there's a deeply technical piece someone wrote here which I find impenetrable cause displays and stuff like that isn't something I think about often. I really don't think HDR looks good in video games a lot of the time, but I like it a lot in movies for some reason (even B&W films, it adds a lot of deep contrast).

But the guy here anyway seems to think a lot of HDR issues with switch 2 in particular comes from an approach of putting SDR first and so don't actually achieve dynamic range, but that Nintendo aren't the only ones. Someone else could do a better job at summarising than I can

Interestingly, chrome now supports HDR screenshots, so I was able to see what Mario Kart is supposed to look in HDR on my TV in a web browser. Dunno if phone browsers will support it.

This is a HDR screenshot, if viewed on a HDR display. edit I checked on my phone and you can't see shit, which is kinda cool in a way as it's really bright and vibrant on the TV. Edit 2 works on phone chrome

System feels good to hold and the new Joycon sticks are a lot better (though a bit too easygoing) but why the hell is Nintendo always so backwards. If I want to use my profile/account on Switch, I have to move everything over and turn my old Switch into an empty husk. Why can't I just use my same account on the new system and keep the old as is? And more annoying still is that you only get this system transfer opportunity once upon booting up Switch 2. No doing it later, no trying out new toy first.

Guess I'll just do the transfer because I don't want to start using a new account but if I ever come across a SW1 game that doesn't work on Switch 2 I'll be extremely pissed because it'll be de facto useless unless a make a new account on SW1 and re-purchase it.

2025.

Edit: wait, there might be a workaround. brb

Edit 2: Ok, there's no workaround, they simply mislabeled it. It's not a transfer, it simply copies everything over and leaves it on the old Switch, except for those few games where save data can't be backed up via the cloud (Pokémon, Animal Crossing etc.). Those will be moved over and disappear from Switch 1. Profiles stay on both systems unless they aren't linked to a Nintendo account, in which case they get moved over and disappear from Switch 1.

Do the Pokemon game saves and Pokemon transfer over when doing the system transfer? wondering about Pokemon home, the Animal Crossing island and other bits and pieces that are problematic.

Yeah, they do. The difference is that those are actually transferred (=moved) while every other save is simply copied. The wording is very misleading, ultimately you'll end up with your saves on both systems except for those you mention, which will be only on Switch 2 after the procedure.

Though not sure about Home, I thought that was all server based anyway?

Thanks, i was hesitant to go ahead with the transfer, i had read different things online, but all is well.

I keep seeing tweets and such that Switch 2 has broke a bunch of sales records. But given it's only tweets from who knows it's hard to take it credibly. Looking forward to seeing some good data and a complete story.

Seems like whatever criteria they are using is a bit useless.  They even say the 3DS was previously the fastest selling but that quite famously had a rocky launch and had to have a price cut.

There needs to be more time before we see how consistently they leave the shelves.

I tried Gameshare earlier with Fast Fusion just for the heck of it (ie. the feature that allows you to stream a game to another Switch 2 or even a Switch 1 without needing another copy of the game). Switch 2 was in the Dock, Switch 1 in handheld mode, so I played one race on the latter. On the plus side it ran pretty much flawlessly with barely noticeably input lag, if at all. And one advantage it has over Download Play on DS back in the day is that the entire game is playable this way, not just a limited amount of courses and cars. On the flipside, however, image quality takes a massive hit – it's very pixelated and/or filled with artefacts, like an online livestream with low bitrate.

I saw people mention it being quite neat for stuff like Clubhouse Games, which makes sense with that game's clean, lo-fi visuals and turn-based gameplay. For games like Fast it's more of an interesting gimmick that kids might get some fun out of for an afternoon but everyone else is probably rather going to spend the additional 15 bucks.

Nintendo's Switch 2 is the company's fastest-selling hardware ever, having sold 3.5m units worldwide in its first four days on sale.

For comparison, Sony sold 4.5m PS5 units globally in its first quarter back in 2020, so Switch 2 has just a million less but in four days. Microsoft has not shared launch numbers of its Xbox Series X/S console.

Yesterday it was reported the console was Nintendo's biggest launch in the UK with the Switch 2 outselling the original Switch by over two to one. However, it's behind the equivalent launches of Sony's PS5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S.

Nintendo has forecast it will sell 15m units from release until the end of the financial year, meaning it's just under a quarter of the way there in four days.

A big difference is Nintendo was well stocked and hasn't had any reported supply constraints. But still, strong start!

Which is roughly the same amount as the Steam Deck's lifetime sales. I thought that would make people realise that these PC handhelds target an entirely different and more niche demographic, but in true internet fashion it seems everyone just thinks the Steam Deck is dead now. Watch the same 'conclusions' being drawn at the end of the year with the ROG Xbox.

Anyway, good on Nintendo, though not surprising. It is kind of funny to think that the system has already passed 1/3rd of WiiU's total sales though.

Two mindblowing facts there 🤯

I've not seen anyone slagging off the Steam Deck (there does always seem to be a lot of fanboys/fanpeople(?) on all sides in gaming though), maybe just sites I don't visit. It has a crazy massive library and I assume a totally different business model.

I wonder why handheld PC’s aren’t bigger or aren’t putting a dent in the Switch 2 numbers. Yes, different audiences. Yes, Switch has Mario Kart. But I feel like gaming and gaming awareness is so big now, if you want a really good handheld gaming device Steamdeck is decent. The build quality, weight and heat of the thing could do with some work. If you were buying a handheld gaming device for a kid Steamdeck has way too many options. But for general, older video game fans if you want access to video games on the go and done simple, it’s good enough for that

I never really considered one over the Switch or Switch 2, too much faffing - it just looks like a PC with hassle :D
(It does also look amazing once it's running games - I just prefer simplicity, I'm not gonna take sides on things).
