Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

They announced a new Sonic kart racer and it seems to have went under the radar?

I didn’t actually play the last Sonic of Racing game. Heard it was mid and just kind of missed it. But I’ve been wanting to play a racing game lately so if I see it cheap on Xbox maybe I pick it up

But new game! Very cool. Wonder if CrossWorlds means it will be like Sega Transformed where it’s not just Sonic characters

Yeah, I hope it's a SEGA racer again and not just a Sonic racer. Maybe it'll allow mix- and matching stages and driving through one of those portals will beam you around, Ratchet-style. Could be an interesting idea if implemented well, but then again it's also coming to Switch so maybe a bit too ambitious.

Wonder how far off it is considering they only showed this teaser. But I am quite looking forward to it. Team Racing isn't half bad btw., but as a follow-up to Transformed it was a bit disappointing.

Turns out my crystal ball was right about how it plays out. Will be interesting to see how they're going to get this running on Switch.

It looks great though, the settings and courses are somewhat inspired by different SEGA IPs, which makes me wonder why they just didn't go full-on cross-over with it again – particularly as it does seem to be a proper Transformed sequel.

Don't get why the network test is only on PS5 while the game launches on six different platforms. Seems more like an exclusive demo at that moment.

I like the transformed elements and the swapping between worlds mid race is really cool. I’m really hoping it is more SEGA and not just Sonic though and they’re hiding that stuff for now. That will be really disappointing if they just stick to Sonic characters again.

I doubt there'll be anything else, they wouldn't have withheld that info from its initial marketing push. They also seem pretty deliberate when naming these and this doesn't have the All-Star branding either.

Maybe one or two guest stars or something. Let's just hope it's not Lewis Hamilton and the Fortnite guy.

This is insane to me. Sega don’t know what to do with a good thing. They do it with Sonic all the time. Like with Mania and until recently Generations.

Everyone agrees All Stars Racing Transformed is the best Karter apart from Mario Kart & some of us prefer it. Why they won’t do that again is mad. This is definitely closer than that last crap, but surely when you’re digging into your vault for upcoming games - Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, etc. Hell, even SoR4 isn’t that old this would be a great way to introduce/reintroduce people to those IPs.

Well, I might have spoken too soon because on their homepage they talk about 'characters from the Sonic and SEGA universes' so it might have more of a broader cast after all and the naming conventions got thrown out the window. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

It also seems like they differentiate between main tracks and Cross Worlds, so it seems like it's pretty much just a binary choice the leading racer can make. As an example, you're racing on Ocean View and then at some point a portion of the track will transport you to Dino-Land or into Space and back. A bit more basic than I thought it would be, but still a nice gimmick and with 24 tracks and 15 of those Cross Worlds that's a decent number I think.

This was a good impression video I think. But even before he mentioned it I noticed the complete item overkill. One of the lesser talked about good things from Transformed is its item balance or rather the fact that they can have a small impact on placements, but overall they were never overbearing and annoying. This, like Team Racing, seems to go into the complete opposite direction and I hope they reconsider before release.

On the positive side it looks really nice, track design seems decent and I like the supposedly more weighty cars.

I signed up for the beta & played about a hour.

It seems ok. I already much prefer it to Team Racing. But they’re still missing what made Transformed so brilliant.

Played 4 tracks and they’re nicely designed. Although I think they’re a bit too short. The Crossworld stuff is a cool gimmick first couple of times but doesn’t actually add anything really. I still miss the SEGA IP themed levels. These are quite generic really.

My biggest issue is just how chaotic everything is. & I put that mainly down to the item economy. I haven’t watched the above video but I guess they’re saying the same thing. Item boxes are way too frequent & are constantly being fired with shit just happening constantly. There’s not much time to breathe and actually race. It ends up not being fun. The item boxes respawn immediately too so everyone’s got an item all the time. & due to the courses being so short you the noise is always there.

My last complaint is more personal, but I’ve never liked how Mario Kart has gone down the kart customisation route. I want the characters to have their own attributes and specific karts. This has copied MK so now you can customise everything. I can place Sonic in a big 4x4 truck if I want. In theory this is good but I just don’t get on with it. & I just don’t want to be fucking about customising stuff in a kart racer. That’s not what I’m here for. I can ignore it I guess but feel like I’m missing something or at a disadvantage if I don’t engage with it.

Yea, don’t think I’ll bother with it when it’s released TBH. I might give it a try when it’s heavily discounted.

The video mentions pretty much the same things, though is generally more positive about it. I'll admit the item situation is really off-putting though. Stuff that consistently disrupts your driving I've come to strongly dislike in racing games, even going as far as traffic or cops in various NfS titles for example. Some fun racers found a good balance (Transformed or CTR) in the past but it seems more of an exception than the rule.

Not sure if it’s just selective, viral clips of this game that I’ve seen but it does look overly chaotic. Like, Mario Kart has moments like that, but it’s not the entire race. The thing about Mario Kart is you can also play pretty solid defence by just holding a shell or banana behind you as a shield.

Obviously this is why the blue shell is such a terror because there’s no reliable shield for that. But again it’s moments of chaos and sometimes the game being unfair. It’s not wacky races from start to finish.

Maybe Sonic is not that bad, either. But from what I’ve seen the tracks are very narrow and the bullshit is very big and it kind of looks a bit of a nightmare.

I’m not totally put off by the game because I do think it looks cool. And i’ve only seen bits of it. But I’m definitely on the wait and see before buying

It still makes me want to go play the last Sonic `Racing game. I’m sure I have it as part of PS+ or something
