Onimusha Way of the Sword

I believe it's a different character or it's a reboot. The likeness here is not Takeshi Kaneshiro who Samanosuke was based on. That makes me think new dude.

Not knowing much about Japanese history other than bits and bobs from samurai films, the website says it takes place around the Edo period. Looking up dates and such, it sounds like Nobunaga is already dead then.

Quote

Fight through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy. Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path?

So this could also be a sequel to Dawn of Dreams, which ended with Toyotomi Hideyoshi in charge of things and as the main villain.

The fact that it's all combat sequences makes me think it'll be very Nioh/Soulslike for sure. I'm definitely a bit disappointed if that's the case, rather than the survival horror with samurai thing the original was going for. Also 'every stage', sounds very Nioh. Older Onimusha was more of a contiguous Resident Evil/DMC1 kinda design. Could be interesting. But it's also grasping as straws no matter what way you look at it, it could still be any kinda game until they show gameplay

I'm also a bit weary of what this might turn into. Resident Evil managed to carve out a new identity with 4 back in the day, but I feel like the evolution of what Onimusha would have become already happened in other IPs like Nioh and its ilk. I've always wanted the series to come back but now that I've seen the trailer I can see why it took so long, and why there might still be a lot of convincing left to do to make both fans and newcomers hop aboard, as it just doesn't stand out as much as it used to anymore. Though it's obviously pretty cool they're doing something with it.

Some people think the protagonist is based off Toshiro Mifune, who was like the most famous Japanese actor ever and was in loads of Kurosawa things.

He already 'played' Miyamoto Musashi in the Onimusha anime, which used Mifune's older likeness.

I'm really shit with faces and recognition so I don't know, but the eyes definitely show a similarity I'd say. Beyond that, unsure, if it was you'd think it's the kinda thing they'd mention in the press release. On the other hand, why get an esteemed actor like that just to use him for a netflix anime, yknow
