My battle brothers

First up, so far, orcless. Zero orcs. This time you're fighting the Tyranids, a hive mind swarm of demon like creatures (who may not be demons in the lore, but they've blade like appendages rather than arms), and while you might first encounter a small cluster, generally this prompts waves to follow. A lot of the time you're fighting them in standard combat, swinging your chainsword, countering and dodging the larger monsters, and taking out the distant projectile throwing Tyranids with your bolt gun. There'll be points though where you have the high ground and have to try to delay the swarm by throwing grenades or exploding barrels as the Tyranids scamper over to swarm your position

It's fun, it's a bit basic and samey, but it's fun. In some ways I wish you felt a bit more indestructible than you do, but I suppose that's less interesting as a game, and the Tyranids are a threat. There's also another enemy type that's more like the rats from A Plague Tale, nicely you generally get a flame thrower for these sections, that's fun

If its anything like the original it's going to kick on in the 2nd half, and there'll be some more variety. I think I'm currently trying to get to a lost/stranded Magus, which feels quite early in still.

Also I watched this this morning which was quite a good background to Titus up until this point, I'm not sure how much he's a character outside of the games, but there's a lot there

I also booted this up properly for the first time today, well I say properly but I only had a chance to finish the prologue/tutorial level before boring adult stuff had to be done.

I didn't play the first game and to be fair this is my first ever dive in to the world of Warhammer and even after spending only around an hour with this game I'm quite saddened on both counts... this feels really nice to play (I'm aware the franchise has a bit of a checkered past with its games though)

Everyone here knows my love affair with the Gears games and this is exactly how I'd imagine a more melee focused Gears game would feel... the character has weight without feeling overly clunky to control, attacks look and feel like they have connection on enemies... everything just has a satisfying impact to it.

I'm playing on Series X and (even though I guess levels are going to get much more hectic later) it's been pretty rock solid on graphics mode... had a couple of judders in cutscenes but that doesn't affect gameplay so I'll forgive those.

Really looking forward to getting my teeth in to this properly tomorrow.

What difficulty did you go with @DANGERMAN? I think the third from left was labelled as what the devs say is the intended experience but i bottled it and just went normal... even with that I've had a few deaths already.

Yeah just normal @Nag

On performance, I've had shader stutter (I assume that's what's causing it), and the framerate has dropped loads. However, it's really shown the benefit of my VRR monitor, I've barely felt it.

To give another negative after just being positive. I think I'm near the end, really enjoying it, but I've started to feel a bit tired whenever I approach an obvious battle arena. Good game still, just samey

I played the tutorial mission in the week and just done a couple of missions now. It’s kind of tough but getting used to it. The big positive to me is just how good it looks. It is an incredible looking thing. Especially when outside and there’s about a 1000 moving things, lasers, detail. Just looks great

One thing missing is the audio isn’t very good on PC. Just sounds a bit flat. I’ve switched to headphones and turned dynamic range off. I think it’s helped but it still sounds weird.

I just finished an early mission where have to spin 4 wheels and defend antennas. I really ran out of all ammo and grenades and those hovering, mind blast enemies turned up. Managed to survive but yeah, very scrambly

I usually like scrambly shooters but I don’t think this is meant to be Uncharted. I’m just kind of bad (but getting the hang of it)

I think I really dislike this game. The main problem is it's too hard and just makes me feel bad. I am hard carried by the 2 AI team mates and just stand back and shoot. And any time I'm forced in to an encounter it's always skin of the teeth stuff. But not in a good way like 'oh how exciting'. More like 'oh my god what the fuck is going on'

I just can't control situations. Especially when there's ranged and melee happening at the same time. I also can't get the counter down. I feel like the timing is way too tight and I can't get it. If the only time I had to do it is when it flashed blue that would be fine, but even on the non-blue counter it's not something that can be ignored and it's so hard to see when there's so much happening. If I don't counter everything I just get fucked up really fast. Like every fight is almost a death.

I'm making it hard on myself still trying to use KBM. Even after 2-3 years it's still so difficult. Like nothing is natural or sensible about it at all

The other thing I really dislike is the structure and how much story there is. In the first game you just go level to level with the odd cutscene. Here it's after every mission I have to go back and listen to people talk for 5 minutes. Which is made worse by not understanding what's going on. I get this is a license game and you have to service the fans, but there has to be a better way of doing it than this. It's just so boring.

The only thing I like about the game so far is how it looks. The graphics are amazing. But I kind of really hate playing it. I think I'll give it another go tomorrow using a controller but if I don't get in to it then I think I'm done.

Had a much better time with the game and ended up finishing the main story. That game is really short! There's only 6 missions in the game. Fair enough some of those missions feel like multiple levels put together, but still felt very short.

Looks like there's 6 co-op missions and PvP. I'm interested in PvP but up for some co-op this week if others want to play?

I don't know what clicked tonight but that was just a lot easier. My main weapon combo was the Heavy Bolt Pistol and when lots of tankier enemies turned up use the big plasma rifle. Just kills everyone.

Really enjoyed it in the end. Even started to dig the Warhammer universe a little bit. Not enough to find out more than what's in the game, but it was cool and stupid. I liked it.

The games starting to suck up my good will now... just got stuck on a joining server screen so no xp progress for a complete operation, the mp is garbage and I kind've hate the percentage based defend segments....

Other than that though...👍

Think it's the 4th mission... some floating thing keeps shooting out a geen circular blast thing that's knocks you off your feet... even if you're standing behind a solid wall.🙄

  • 2 weeks later...

So I (finally) finished the campaign on this today and ran through the last Operation that I had left... I'd love to say I remained as enamoured throughout the game as my first post but there were a few too many issues and irritations along the way.

It's way too one note for it's own good, it's far too easy to lose track of what the hell is going on in more intense melee segments resulting in almost getting stunlocked in place and sometimes the hit detection just feels wrong... and all of that gets worse when you take it online in Operations, it feels sluggish.

Time to kill in multiplayer needs tweaking... you die way too quickly for it to be enjoyable.

Having said all that it's still a decent game, it looks and sounds fantastic I just wish I'd liked it a bit more than I did.
