Make the most popular character hard to play, that'll end well.

I don't quite see how playing a support would slow down the learning process though. If anything I feel like those roles usually emphasise positioning more because you have to keep enemies, your frontline and your backline sort-of in light of sight most of the time, while also having decent enough map awareness to not sit in a spot where flankers eat you for breakfast. Of course that could also be said about any other class, but those usually only have to respect one bar (enemy health), while you have to pay attention to all of them. Again, I haven't played this game yet, but when I look at how dumb a lot of damage dealers play in Overwatch because they're used to having a tank in front of them and a healing beam up their ass all the time I'd say both tank and support (vanguard and strategist in this game's lingo) are better picks to really understand the ins and outs early on.

Reminds me how in FFXIV the black mage class is the hardest class in the game to optimise cause of its slow cast speed and requirement to weave teleports/instacasts during some of its movement. But it's the posterboy class of the game and most of the playerbase simply runs around not doing anything and doing less damage than a healer.

I'm pretty traumatised still by this I have to be honest. Now I'm thinking PUG Spideys will be this.

They popped up in the launch trailer, but I never heard of these guys. Thankfully another support/strategist. Girl does the usual 'fling stuff at enemies' type stuff that seems to either damage or heal, but them being a stance character makes it rather interesting and they seem to able to deploy some sort of barriers and shields. Cool concept, will be high up on the list of characters I'll try out early on.

It might be with random people, but the flexibility will add a lot of depth when playing with a coordinated team. Overwatch became incredible sterile and one-note after introducing role lock and I always felt it goes against the core idea of this type of game.

The CCU is very high for this, not a Concord situation at all though I don't think anyone with half a brain expected that to be the case. They're making tons of money off the cosmetics monetization as well.

I'm definitely going to get stuck into practice mode later on and settle on a strategist, and do my part to bring some teams down with some bad plays later on.

I expect that servers will be janky for a while though.

Also while it was obvious to be the case, the amount of quips the characters have in combat make me determined never to play Spider-Man. Going to play an edgelord character instead, thank you very much.

I looked through a thread of all the different costumes for the characters. Basically any costume that isn’t original to Rivals (so comes from a comic or a movie) is only as recent as 2019. Which I wonder if that’s an indication of how long this game has been in development
