The thing is AI could absolutely do my job. A computer could absolutely look through an excel spreadsheet and find all the variances and do all the corrections and input all the data. I’ve talked about this before on here but my big fear for AI is how it will decimate office jobs in 20-30 years down the line. I think most jobs will get turned in to “AI Supervisor” roles where AI does all the work and someone just sits there clicking yes it’s right or no it’s wrong and the AI does it again. In terms of accounts, there’s already computer scanners that can learn the pattern of invoices and do all that automatically. It’s not quite AI because someone needs to look at it and make small corrections but it’s close. I left my last job because it got so boring just sitting there clicking buttons making sure the computer has done it right

 

My idea is that AI will do to office jobs, especially accounts, admin, etc what machines did to factories. 
 

I wasn’t trying to say AI is like a calculator exactly, more to the point I think it makes people lazy and turns their brain off. Same way calculators do. My maths has got so much worse working in accounts because everything counts for me. But accounts is more about organisation then math and I don’t a AI system is there yet.
 

But overall the way I see people use AI and how lazy it makes them on critical thinking and pure laziness is a huge negative for a work place, obviously.

 

It’s not that I don’t give a shit about the environment factor, either. I think about it when I use AI (Which is not all the time or everyday or something). But also I guess I don’t care enough. It is really easy and I get really bored

I think the dogs are a solid giveaway, some of them look pretty horrible. The humans are becoming frighteningly good though, that old black dude for example is really convincing despite some inaccuracies between lip movement and voice.

 

Thankfully humanity will only do good and positive things with this tech, so no need to worry.

Curious how many of us have basically replaced search engines with AI. I'm sort of already there, or at least it's neck and neck with using reddit as my main search engine. But I've ended up using AI to summarise chapters of books that I took a break in, so I don't as easily forget where I left off.

 

Reason I mention is I see firefox has integrated AI chatbots into the browser sidebar. Kinda seems like it's going to become the thing now.

I am fairly anti AI in general, more through stubborness, but have little need for it in everyday life. 

 

Want to do something i dont know how then i would try every otber avenue first.  

 

Can i teach myself or research first. 

 

Yes I can see some benefits, but I fear that its one of those technologies that will end up taking more away from us than giving. 

 

Im going to try and keep my intelligence (or lack of) analogue.

I get frustrated at work with almost every issue someone will say "Can we use AI to solve that ?" then when I say "What do you actually mean by that?" or "Is the benefit of that approach worth the environmental impact?" or "Have you considered any safety or security impacts of using AI?" then I'm usually met either with silence or some sort of response akin to 'stop being obstructive and move with the times...'

 

It infuriates me that AI often just used as a catch all term now for any sort of computer assisted modelling, regardless of whether it's an open or closed system, and whether or not any machine learning is actually occurring.

 

Further, when people keep using AI to find basic information, often repeatedly, rather than bookmarking a given source or actually researching themselves to find out whether the given answer is correct (or even at times relevant).

I don't disagree with that, I think though I feel forced into using it more as standard search engines have become plagued by useless SEO shit (a lot of which, ironically, written by AI).

 

One of the reasons I've gotten back into reading is I feel like we're heading towards a cognitive crisis, where people will outsource literacy itself to AI and their ability to absorb, understand and critically evaluate information will atrophy. So I want to redevelop these muscles a bit

we've got a girl starting at work who, in her interview, asked us what our thought were on using AI. She didn't really expand on why she was asking, but we use a bit to expand images (where we need to resize stuff and need a bit more wall or whatever). We don't use it to write the copy though, as that's why the role exists, so that we're not just getting AI slop. 

 

It's made me a bit worried about her, with the context of students using AI for all their work and not doing any of it themselves. Handy to know how to use it I guess, but it does mean they can't actually do the task themselves. We interviewed her over a month ago and I still think about that question. Over the next few weeks I've got to teach her Photoshop, copywriting, our systems, and our products, potentially even design although that's the thing I'm hoping she's good at. I was told not to show her too much because she's meant to be my junior, and I'm wondering if that will even be a problem as it might be more of an issue that I find out she's just been uploading AI generated stuff

Dont get me wrong, im not 100% against it, I think it will regardlesz become part of a lot of work places so important know how to use it. 

 

Generic description generation for items on our website at work has potentially become a lit quicker as its realistically just copy and paste work. 

 

But like the above its the latest buzz, and what most people are thinking is it will save me some work and brain power. 

 

My thoughts yes it might, but once e employers see employees sitting round with less to do they wont view it as this is good for my staff, they will see it as an opportunity to reduce staff

 

 

Dont rely on it to heavily I guess is what im saying, people could end up fulfilling their own redundancy.

I liken it to lens flair in games. For a while everything had lens flair. The fucking light in your fridge would have lens flair. Then people realised that maybe you didn't need lens flair off every single light source, and we got normal, sensible usage out of it

 

that's where we're heading to with AI. There's uses for it, not every thing needs it. Unfortunately, the people at the top of businesses don't know how to do anything, which means they don't know what it's needed for

I really struggle to look at the very few instances where AI has actually done good (mostly science/medicine) and consider it all worthwhile when seeing at all the damage it's doing everywhere else.

I don't claim to understand how the Grok LLM is fed, but you have to imagine that it is effectively a mirror of the community that twitter has fostered since Musk taking over. You see it evidently enough if you try and read the comments on a logged in account, replies that aren't just slightly racist but full on Seig Heiling, even before Musk did exactly that in front of a crowd.
