Metaphor: ReFantazio

I have that issue with ghosting text when looking around after reading white on black as well, but never had that issue with P5. As said P5 was just a tad overwhelming but I do kind of like the style of it. And considering that at some point muscle memory kicks in and you don't have to read the text anyway, I'd say I also prefer something that looks nice over, say, classic FF white-on-blue textboxes.

It might be a more serious issue for people who are colourblind or have other eye-related problems, so maybe Atlus should look at accessibility options if they continue down with those overly stylised designs.

It's hard to get a sense from the reviews what makes it stand out from Persona.

Sounds like this puts in a solid performance at 30fps on Steam Deck, which seems like it matters here cause I doubt many want to play a 100 hour JRPG solely at their desktop if they have a choice.

I'm going to wait and see what others say later, I'm just a bit wary that a lot of the reviews are coming from people who already love Persona and I'd like to hear some takes from people who are maybe a bit more jaded by that formula at this point. It does sound cool, but I want to spend less money in general and it takes a long time to get into games like this as they're quite slow up front

I’ve seen a few reviewers say it’s like the culmination of Persona. So it is that, but excellent. Not sure if there’s any huge twists (outside the story/setting)

Think Jason Schrier had a tweet saying it’s Persona with a job system

It's a good thing there's a demo, so the only thing I would spend is time if I needed to try it.

I just sort of try to avoid getting swept away by massive review scores now cause that's led to disappointment and frustration before, but I wanted to call out specifically what a good practice it is now by Atlus and Square to do these prologue demos. I hope it's something that catches on.

In a way it might need to, given how some AAA games are struggling to catch attention.

The high scores have me worried for the totally opposite reason. I can’t see them giving that kind of score to a turn based Persona+ experience - which is exactly what I want. I’m worried there’s a huge innovation in here somewhere which warrants the higher scores that I’m going to hate. I just want an old school JRPG with decent production values.

Just looked at the Eurogamer technical review of this and it sounds bad... is this how reviews work now? A game with shocking technical performance can still receive 5 star reviews?

Imagine if car reviews worked like that... looks beautiful, has nice comfy seats but won't go in to 5th gear and misfires constantly... 5 stars!

DF are far more exacting of things like that though, and the review was a different person. A car fucking up isn't the same as a game having framespikes and stuff

That said, I did think the demo looked kinda horrible with all the motion blur and vignettes. Game seems like it would be good for triggering some migraines if you play it too long

Also the guy says this at the end so it's a bit more nuanced

But I still think Metaphor: ReFantazio is very much worth playing if you do enjoy - or think you'd enjoy - Persona-style games, as I think Atlus' latest RPG is excellent. It's just that to best enjoy it, you need to carefully navigate a range of platform and display choices, each of which come with their own tradeoffs.
