Heretics Defeated!

So far, very good. Only got in an hour today (for now) but I'm enjoying everything about this. From the "Happy Tree Friends" aesthetic. To the distinctly Isaac/Gungeon feel to the combat. The cult building aspect so far is the newest gameplay to me and the most intriguing. It reminds me of both Freedom Fighters and the base building of Suikoden. I have fought one boss and indoctrinated three followers into my Cult. While grinning from ear to ear at the presentation.

Martyred!

Turns out, Cultin' ain't easy! When you're away, playing the action part of the game. You have a faith gauge for your disciples. This is invisibly ticking down while you are away. Initially I thought I would be relatively hands off with managing my cult, day to day. Something more benign akin to Sim City or Black & White. Nope. You have to be quite hands on with running your cult. Or they lose faith in you and start to dissent. When you beat a level and return after killing the boss. You are awarded a faith bonus and your disciples faith in you grows. If you start dying to bosses (noted by this sessions title). You return to diminishing faith, as they start to view you as weak. That's when things get ...old school. You can either "re-educate" the dissenters. Alternatively, sacrifice the heretics to your god. The tone continues to amuse me. On the one hand, you have to craft/build sleeping bags (initially) so your disciples don't just sleep on the floor. The next adjacent unlock in the crafting tier? A body pit. That's where corpses go, after all.

Two deaths to the level two boss and one dissenter "ascended". Things are going well. I even got to name my cult now. So I decided on an old throwback.

Pious The Chosen😂

Did I mention I was enjoying this?

First world boss defeated! The four main hub levels are opened up by your number of followers. By this point I had the necessary number of disciples to open world two. However, that isn't the end of world one. They offer you the chance to go deeper into the level - increased rewards, difficulty etc, etc The warning they give however, is to make sure your cult can survive an extra couple days without you. As I was down to half a heart by that point, I returned to base for now.

Meanwhile, I had someone die of old age within my cult (they do age in semi-real time). They said they'd lived a long life in my service and only had days left... At 40😂 Their robes go white and their faces wrinkle and everything.

This game looks really cool and I want to play it but already got so many games going right now. Hopefully by the time I get there I’ll find a good deal on it (Or maybe Gamepass, this would be great on there).

What are you playing on? I want to know if the Switch version runs well because I think this would be a cool Switch game.

PS5. Unfortunately, I've heard there are issues with the Switch version at the moment.

I hit another sweet spot of Follower numbers. So I decided to open world 3. The world itself was fine. Died in three hits to the boss of the first level. Opted against returning here quite yet. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure all of my first generation of disciples has died of old age. You have options with corpses. Bury them in a body pit (which gets upgraded into a full-on funeral), put them in a composter and ..don't waste the meat. I opted for a selection of all three. Fertilizer is very much in demand, with the more crops you grow. I randomly generated another dissenter and I'm quietly confident the status is bugged. The status bar for it doesn't seem to reduce completely, no matter what you do. It also seems to refill at the beginning of each new day cycle?

So my only progress is in slowly working my way through world 2 right now. There is more going on, outside of the levels and base camp. But I'm not going to spoil it.

BUGS!🤬

I've reached a snag. 97 days into my cult and problems have emerged. You conduct a sermon each day, for your disciples. Usually followed by a ritual - These typically give bonuses to food, crafting etc Except now, 9/10 these rituals will freeze just as the animation stops. The action doesn't progress and nothing changes. Fortunately, the only place you can save in the game is at base camp. So you can still pause, save and reset. But the rituals can often be requests from the cult. So you need them to work. Hopefully a patch will come soon to solve this?

Bug ..Fixed??🤨

There was no update, or patch download today. It just works now?? Anyway, finally got 20 followers (a big enough deal to unlock a gold trophy, apparently) and beat the boss of world 2, after a lot of tries beforehand. So 2/4(5?) world bosses dead.

Ok, this is really bloody good. I’m not the best with base-building games, so I’m probably cocking that part of the game up. But, so far I’m having a great time. The combat is satisfying, the regular unlocks make you feel like you’re achieving something. Yeah, I’m impressed.

Killed 3 bosses, still not sure what I’m doing with my base. I’ve planted a load of bushes for growing crops, but my followers never bother farming them.

Still, my cult seems to be developing nicely.

Definitely a highlight of the year. Certainly recommended. Though maybe not so much the Switch version, as it’s apparently a bit dodgy.

The patch has arrived!

Lots of quality of life fixes. Your sermons now play host to your entire cult (20 strong, at this point). Not the weird glitch that only had 6 at a time. You can also scroll through all of them now too. There were times which required specific people to be in your church. It was random if they showed up before the quest timer ended. This, apparently, was a bug.

Meanwhile, killed the third world boss. Plus revisited the boss arena of world 2 and 3. As there is a special encounter reward to each arena, post-world boss, needed for an NPC. So now I've got one world boss left and the final boss. That's it. It looks like I've still got two hidden areas in the world map too. Still unsure how these are supposed to be unlocked, beyond RNG encounters?

Did the Final boss today. Still got plenty to do, with trophies to get. Doubt I’ll go for the Platinum, as there’s ones for killing bosses without getting hit once. I managed it with the first boss, but I don’t think I can with the rest.

The rest of the map should unlock around World 4, it did for me anyway.
