I'm not trying to act like I'm good at it or I'm regularly successful at it, but I think my favourite game right now is playing footsies. I love dash blocking, I love shimmying, I love just getting the distance right when the tip of the hit box catches the opponents feet. It's so satisfying and good feeling.

When it works. Which is like 3/10 times. But, man, it's fun shit

Wow, Arcrevo tournament 1st place can be up to $50k. Over $90k total for entire prize pool

It’s not quite a million dollars, but feel like these are huge prizes for these games. Even $20k for Uni seems kinda nuts

That's not uncommon.  Some get so intimately connected to that controller there's no reason to use anything else.  Especially if they're playing Tekken.  That's such a PS1 game.

Insert Gen X / Gen Z meme here

I was gonna say, those sightlines could be taken out of context so easily😄

I must admit watching people like Maximillian Dood and others use arcade sticks couldn't be anymore alien to me. I've only ever really played Fighting games with a controller.

Spoilers for Street Fighter 6 Combo Breaker but

Spoiler

A Lily player El Chakoty won the tournament! Lily was the first character I tried because I wanted to be the one doing the grabbing for a change, then everyone called her low tier and I was like eh. Maybe I play Lily after all

However, hard to tell if this win was because of the patch that just came out and it’s all new to people. But still. Amazing result! I enjoy watching this guy stream on YT

I meant to,play this week. But I’ve had a really rough one and barely played anything. I’ve had 5 days off and played about 3 hours of Paper Mario and 1 hour of Hellblade.

It doesn’t matter how good you get anyway. I’ll be playing Lily so you just gotta guess if you’re going to get grabbed or not

I remember watching that guy during SFV, he was one of very few players who gave Lucia a shot, a character that felt a bit obsolete but was super fun to use.

They didn't change Lily too much (I checked the patch notes just for fun), the only good thing she got is being able to land her Level 1 Super in more situations which might improve her overall average damage output, but it's hardly game changing. He might just be super good with her.

Watched a bit of that Combo Breaker Top 8 (was cool to see a Gief there). Chakotay did a great job using Lili's Wind Charge as some kind of mind game, catching people with the follow-up when they felt they could approach for a punish. Not sure if that's a common thing among Lili players as I don't really follow SF6 but that seemed the deciding factor in some rounds.

Also, fun fact, as young as he is, his opponent is basically a veteran, I still remember him as a baby from this:

I'm surprised he hasn't evolved into Kamiyamon yet and started blocking left and right with all the nonsense people throw at him.

Anyway, I think it's cool that those FG producers are some sort of team trying to push the genre forward. The annual fighting game developer roundtable they have (which includes people behind basically every Japanese FG IP) are always a good watch. Linked to this it's also interesting to observe that fighting games usually don't have this black hole pull a lot of other modern MP games have, and actually encourage trying out more than one because certain aspects translate laterally and just grinding through one can feel a bit limiting on the long run. Like doing only one exercise at the gym or something.

SF6 over Tekken is surprising. Under a 1000 players for Mortal Kombat is surprising to me but I’m no expert maybe that’s expected of these games. GGST in at 3!

Tekken has fallen off a lot, people really dislike the current state of the game. It's a shame cause it's such a cool, stylish and well put together product. But the way aggression works at both the low and high skill level is genuinely discouraging if you try to stick with it.

People criticise the drive rush mechanic in 6 but it doesn't seem to completely dominate neutral like heat does. Like unless I'm wrong, you can't just sidestep or react or counter a heat smash, it just homes in and gives plus on block pressure and explodes you. It sucks

edit though tbh these aren't necessarily bad numbers considering how massive SF6 is right now
