I’ve never been in to hyper gory stuff. I’ve never liked Mortal Kombat. I was never entertained by those FPS games from the 2000’s where you can dismember people. I think the only hyper violent games I really liked was the God of War trilogy. But those games were borderline comedies so it just kind of fit how stupid it all is (I say that lovingly)

If the game was called John Pincushion I probably would look at it and go ‘eh’. But instead it’s Wolverine and I’m like oh. Well that’s not very nice

Maiming generic grunts is all well and good. But I'm interested more in the potential boss fights. These two from the trailer, specifically:

Ugly "movie" costume though...

I actually didn't look at the violence in particular, probably have been numbed by Hollywood and I also just recently rewatched Deadpool & Wolvie, but yeah, this is very much the Wolverine from that movie or Logan, not really a comic book version. He even looks a bit like a mix between Jackman and Liev Schreiber. You could probably make a point that these comic book game adaptations take too much inspiration from the MCU visual language instead of the actual source material. The latter seems to be reserved for mid-budget games like Midnight Suns or Ultimate Alliance, as if that wasn't as appealing to the mainstream as the other variant – which is, unfortunately, probably true.

Maybe it’ll be fine. But I hope this game has a no blood option. Some games have that right. Turn blood green or off completely. Maybe they really want you to see it and it’s a big part of what they want to show you. But I’m happy with PG13 wolverine who cuts people and they just fall down

🤷‍♂️

I like superhero stories for the characters, story, fights, spectacle and crazy interactions. Not for dark violence. Same reason I was not a fan of Dr Strange 2 and don’t watch Invincible. Spider-man kept it to a minimum and was awesome

That’s not dark violence in the trailers though. That’s cartoony, funny, OTT violence. I’m a fan of both.

Plus if your character has big fuck off shiny knifes sticking out of his hands, I want geysers of blood when you’re fighting people. It’s just right.

I agree that it's not on Logan's level but neither is it cartoony or funny IMO, it's that middle thing I can't help but feel is pandering to a teenage audience in a somewhat puerile fashion (not saying older people can't enjoy it of course). It's a bit like Mortal Kombat, though not quite as gruesome and organ-splattering. I kind of get maf's point of view, but I don't feel as strongly about it (probably because the game hasn't and never will be on my radar anyway).

I don't think there'd be anything wrong with a toggle though. Sony's first party games always do a great job with accessibility options so why not let people remove the juciy bits if they want.

Yeah, I think the tone comes across too gritty and self serious for it to feel comic. A Sam Raimi film is more what I have in mind when it comes to 'funny' violence (though that makes the Dr Strange 2 mention a bit ironic, I haven't seen that tho)

It’s not a deal breaker or I think the game will be bad. Just not very visually appealing. Slightly the opposite of that.

Of course I’m still going to play it and probably like it

RE9 has me thinking about this violence argument again, and I think it's interesting to compare that Wolverine trailer with almost any scene from RE9, at least from Leon's part of the game. It goes to show what a difference tone makes when it comes to on screen blood and guts, they're equally violent but the effect is very different. It makes sense though cause these new RE games have so many Sam Raimi tributes in them, well VII did anyway, *groovy*

RE9 gore is so good. The way it sticks to the walls and ceilings when you blow a zombie up is incredible.
A lot more serious than this though which is where I say this is more cartoony.
