mfnick Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Basically which anti virus/ spyware etc package do people recommend. Ones that don’t interfere too much and kill performance. The free trial on ours is due to run out so wondering which to get.

My current computer has had no additional anti virus since day one (five years ago) and I’ve had no issues. Had bad experiences with AVG and McAfee in the past. Edit: I should say, I also stopped watching porn on my PC. 1

Even as I do visit websites pretty indiscriminately unless it's obviously a scam or whatever. The last time I saw a trojan on my computer it was some Python script I had written myself. My computer thought it was clearly something really sus (it was a script I wrote to try and scrape websites for GPUs) Feel like now it's mostly phishing scams and weird .exes you need to be wary of. js isn't a massive vector for infection like old flash was

And bear in mind I'm still a Microsoft Beta tester, and I'm usually one or two builds ahead of most other people. It's one of the few things I've done with PC's that pays dividends. I've got free Windows 10, and free Office 365. I've used Windows Defender for a few years now, and only back it up with a twice monthly scan with Malwarebytes free. And I think I still use Malwarebytes out of habit more than anything. 1

For years I've bought Norton 360 (or whatever it's called) to use on our PC and it has enough uses that we can also put it on our phones/tablets. We barely use the PC now and I'm wondering if extra protection is even needed on phones/tablets compared to what they ship with nowadays? Tldr... should I continue to buy a Norton product or am I wasting my cash?
one-armed dwarf Posted November 13, 2021 Posted November 13, 2021 IMO anti virus is a bit of a snake oil thing in the sense that the web is not as dangerous as it used to be. There's still bad things that can happen, but a lot of the bad stuff before was due to vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash which has basically being excised from the web now. The web and javascript is ostensibly not as free reign for fucking your shit up as that was, although it can still happen I guess. I never use antivirus besides the built in Windows stuff, I can't remember the last time I had a problem. I don't ...uh, discriminate too much on the sites I visit. Disclaimer, if you're PC gets dicked by weird shit I ain't taking responsibility. I don't know anything about phones or tablets

I did have one on my phone for a while, but not for ages. I don't really use my phone for the sort of stuff I'd need to worry about viruses
