Art of Rally

So it's like a top down/isometric sort of rally game, with a nice basic/stylish graphics, it's great, the handling is spot on imo, it's on the realistic side but not as hard as dirt rally because of the wide tracks with lots of run off area (cut pretty much every corner), and there's a lot more scope for some nice power slides and opposite lock. its great fun. a trailer might explain it better:

the leaderboards seemed to work at first but then seemed a bit broken, so hope that gets fixed, not that i have any friends on the epic store (think i'm 'spatular-' if anyone wants to add me). it's pc only at the moment but i guess it might come to consoles later.

it's on steam for just under £20, well about £17.5 with initial discount, it's the same on the epic store but if you claim rocket league for free you get a £10 voucher so can get it for £7.5. might have been better getting it on steam for the leaderboards but don't regret my first epic purchase after getting control free with a graphics card and claiming 70+ free games on there.

it's a bit hard to judge jumps because of the view but jumps are always difficult in rally games anyway.

i'd like a normal chase cam and steering wheel support added, i recon it'd make great more-standard/not-top-down rally game too.

these guys also did a game called absolute drift which is good fun - but also really hard to drift iirc - by default art of rally has steering assist on 100% i think, i haven't changed the default settings but am guessing turning that down makes it handle more like the old game.

Anyone else going to give it a go?

Finally put on Xbox and Game Pass. Problem is it’s broken :( .

Got a bug where you get stuck on the Press any button screen. Managed to use a restart trick which worked but wasn’t really in mood after messing about. Done the first rally though and initial thoughts are it feels and looks great. Just hope that bug is fixed soon, don’t want that hassle everytime I want to play it.

I've been chipping about with it through Game Pass, thankfully haven't experienced that bug although the daily and weekly tasks weren't working on my first attempt... they were yesterday though.

It's not bad, in career mode you basically go through the years starting around 71 or close to that and as such the cars are pretty slow and handle terribly... the daily had me using what looked like a Sierra and the weekly was an Escort Cosworth (they don't use real names) which were both a damn sight faster. So as it is I'm looking forward to go through the Series and getting to the really quick cars.

I've had this same issue everytime I've got to start it up, had to restart the SX and it boots, annoying though.

Aside from the above, I think the game is a ton of fun. Initially I was a little weirded out when it put you in free roam as I thought there would be proper rallying, after messing around in free roam for a bit hoping I'd get a career option pop up I quit to the main menu and there is was, felt a bit silly.

Anyway, the meat of the game is the career mode going through the years from 1970 onwards (as others have mentioned), through various rallies in different countries from Japan, Italy, Norway and Finland. The art design is really bright and colourful while staying on the right side of cartoony, the little advertising hoardings that say things like 'Petrol' and 'Oil' made me laugh the first time I saw them as well. I was a little worried the handling model was going to be very twitchy and a bit too Toybox Turbos/Micro Machines for a Rally game with the camera angle and all but it works really well here. I will say I've yet to master it and have gone over the edge of roads and in to trees and houses quite a few times but I think I'm slowly getting better stage-by-stage.

I think this game is an example of what's great about Game Pass, I don't tend to bother with Indie games too much as they're usually too expensive for what I'm willing to pay and I don't have the time. I wouldn't of bought this on PC for £20/£17 or however much it was but as it's included with GP I was compelled to give it a go, getting to try out cool weird little games like this with no strings attached is a great feeling. Incredibly relaxing to play and such a nice palette cleanser of a game.

Still plugging away at this every now and again.

I'll often start it up if I've got a spare 20/30 minutes and do a few stages/rally's but then that turns into a 'oh, just one more stage' and then that turns into 'oh, I might as well finish the rally now' which then turns into 'well, I might as well finish the season off' which is a good sign, it's very addictive.

I will say though that if I played it for long periods I do think I'd get a bit bored of it as it is repetitive (due to the nature of the game really) and there isn't really enough variety of tracks there to hold your attention for 3-4 hour periods or so. In nice short bursts though, doing a few rally's or a season it's cool, relaxing and addictive.

I'm up to the penultimate season now (group S?) so shouldn't have too long left to go.

I’ve been playing it the exact same way. Up to the last set of rallies now.

The assists definitely need turning down though, had to drop them all. They’re way too intrusive by default. Feels like it robs all control from you and does lot let you slide the car about which is hell fire worthy in a Rally game. Plays a lot better when you turn them down.

Completed yesterday. It’s not a masterpiece or anything but I enjoyed it throughout. Especially after reducing the assists & id say the first 2 groups can drag a bit as the cars just aren’t very good but after that it’s a lot more fun.

7/10

I’m very close to finishing it now, I’m in the final round of Group S and just have a few rally’s left to go before starting up the final season.

I think I kind of love it now, it dipped in the middle for me and it can still be repetitive due to the tracks and nature of the game but it’s so relaxing, addictive and fun, kind of don’t want it to end now.

Started this, grabbed it off the steam sale, I've been eyeing it up a while.

Took a bit of time to get used to the weight and inertia of the cars, and to be frankly honest, I don't think those cars at the start are the way to open a game. They are fun, don't get me wrong, but they're really hard to slide and you'll often find the engine block pulls the front of the car out of the controlled slide, which is a bit annoying.

I'm in the season where you unlock the Stratos now and it's increased in fun as you can spend a lot of time going sideways, it's gone from trying to keep in a slide to controlling slides with opposite lock and it feels more involved now.

I am pretty awful at this, but when you carve a line through with the nose pointed in, it feels incredible.

They've added some cars as well as a new location too. Another location will be added, they've not specified where it is other than it's in the southern hemisphere. I'm guessing Australia or Argentina or somewhere like that.
