Spring boarding off the other thread FF4 has two of my most favourite JRPG boss fights of all time. There’s the guy with the cloak that you can only deal damage to him if you use the thief ability on him first. My eyes really opened when I worked that out. A JRPG that actually uses the thief ability in a meaningful way. Can’t think of another time that’s happened.

The other boss is a a guy who changes the effects of white and black magic every few turns. So you have to really learn the battle and be ultra precise with what you’re doing. If one of your characters is about to die and you know the magic is about to change you have to cast your big fire spell on your ally and your big heal spell on the boss. Very clever, very making you pay attention shit. The most complicated JRPG boss I think I’ve ever fought. It really is a boss where you have to think turns ahead where as most JRPG bosses you hit ‘em and heal, hit ‘em and heal. This is not that. You will getting fucking punished for that shit.

Also both of these bosses are in a boss rush and it’s gruelling. I don’t remember the other 2 bosses but they’re all hard.

Most people always talk about the big, climatic story based boss fights but these are my 2 favourites from the series. Really interesting gameplay.

When it comes to interesting mechanics obviously my pick is a XIV boss. It's a raid boss that makes you do maths, at one point it asks you what a prime number is and if you stand in the wrong spot. It's always fun with new people seeing 24 ppl running around trying to figure out how to make a number divisible by 3 when these same ppl agonise over optimising DPS and rotations

They're probably going to show a new Final Fantasy tonight. Rumour states that it's by the FFXIV Heavensward team and might have more of a classic high fantasy style. Single player game, not online.

Would be cool, Heavensward had the best FF story since IX or X at least. Showed that the magic was still alive kinda, at least in MMO form.

Well it's going to be very far out but hopefully they stick to the current strategy of just using Unreal Engine, cause the reason they messed up the last gen was they went all in on their own engines (crystal tools for XIII and XIV 1.0, luminous for XV)

Regardless of your opinions about those games it meant they got stuck in the weeds for entire decades just developing graphical pipelines and assets moreso than making actual games. FFXIV barrels having more polygons than actual characters, an entire dev role for FFXIII being some girl designing cobblestones all day. Absolute nonsense

Kinda took the failure of XIV to snap them back to reality I think.

The way forward is that they're trying to get out FFVIIR Part 2 out before the end of 2022.

They then plan to release the Project Athia in 2023 which will obviously, completely, fail.

In turn this will have repercussions on the planned launch of FFVII in 2024.

After realising that they merge whatever they've showed previously of PA with whatever they showed of FFXVI and will release that as a cross-gen game for PS5/PS6.

I like SE but their production pipelines are ridiculously bad and slow. You can pretty much just add two years on top of whatever release year they announce for a game these days.

I have been playing FF XII the last week or so, first time since it came out.

And so far I cant work out why I didnt enjoy it that much at the time.

I'm Really enjoying it, Characters arent as annoying as I remember, and the overall world is great.

Glad I gave it a second chance.

It was honestly a bad game in 2006. A lot of stuff wasn't well thought out and the story was boring. I still think the story is a bit dull but I appreciate its style a lot more, but also the game itself is waaay better with the job system mechanics.

I was going to mention I didnt recall the Job System, Does definitly seem to help the game a bit,

The Story I currently dont think is dreadfull, but certainly not memorable.

The Characters individual backgrounds are all quite nice, but the evil threat against Dalmasca and building of vayne is as  bad guy is dreadful, I feel less like im trying to stop some evil plan and feels like pointless wandering.

I cant recall the end game to well, but remember I kinda thought "oh, is that it!"

Still enjoying it for time being.

The biggest issue for me is a lot of the story happens around the characters and not really to/with them. That being said, it slotted itself in my top 10 of all time and is probably my favourite FF game purely for the world and mechanics.
