Films II : The Filminator

Jungle Cruise - Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson, Jesse Plemmons, Jack Whitehall.

Good fun film, with decent chemistry between the two leads (albeit the whole 'pants' thing got a bit weary). Plemmons was rather wasted in his 'baddie' role, and Whitehall rather unrecognisable from his stand-up appearance.

Overall it was one of those easy to watch action adventure things, and I enjoyed it.

Although there have been things I've wanted to see of late. I haven't been in the right headspace to do so.

Since that is clearing up. Over the next week, I've got Dr. Strange 2 on Friday (still haven't seen the first one) and next Tuesday, via the membership, Everything, Everywhere All at Once. Which I am genuinely looking forward to.

Same, going to the Tuesday preview as well, which pushed Dr Strange 2 back by a week for me.

I saw The Northman the other week and it was excellent, really visceral and grubby but also a bit oddly filmed as well (in keeping with Eggers other two films from what I understand, I haven't actually seen them yet) that really lent into the Norse myth/reality thing they where going for.

I watched a horror film called X last week. It's ok, but it feels like they could have done a bit more with it weirdly, despite it having the sort of premise you shouldn't expect too much from.

3 couples rent a farmhouse from this old couple with the intention of filming the world's best porn film (set in the 70s). The old couple seem prudish, one of the couple's is only there to film not take part, which causes tension

I won't say too much else, but it's solid if not spectacular

A Dark Song (2016)

I've seen this a couple of times, most recently today, where it's free through one of the with ads channels on Amazon Prime (albeit it's the second time I've watched a movie through the channel, and no ads appeared).

It's a slow burning atmospheric 'horror' film, where a women engages the services of a guy to perform a magic ritual (won't say why, to avoid spoilers).

Then the majority of the movie is just her & him alone in a remote house, undertaking the different stages of the incantations (based on a ritual from The Book of Abramelin).

It's really quite dark, really well done, the two leads are excellent.

Jackass Forever.

Fucking loved it. If you like Jackass you’ll like this. Simple as that.

Nobody

Brill action film. Took a short while to get going but when it did, it was pretty special.  The end action scene was particularly glorious. Some people say it’s better than the John Wick films, I wouldn’t go that far but it’s up there at least.

Special mention to the scene where the main bad guy throws a chair at one of his lackeys while in hospital. Fucking killed me that part. Had to pause it I was laughing so much.

I was away with work in 2010 and 4 of us popped to the cinema in Swindon midweek (not even an Orange Wednesday) to see Avatar, about 8 weeks after release, so sometime in Feb 2010, and it was already sold out.

So we ended up with Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness instead (if anyone remembers that !?!)

So I've not seen Avatar either.

I find Avatar strange in that it's the biggest grossing film of all time and no one really cares about it. Image the next film will break the top 5 biggest grossing as well. I guess with the first one it was the first proper 3d feature length film that came out, so that probably helped.

@Nag you might like it, it has similar beats to Aliens, although much more colourful and teen friendly and the marines are the baddies and not the goodies. Also it is shit as well.

Apparently it was very big in China, also probably the 'new generation' of 3d and CGI technique gave it that FOMO factor.

I never saw the 3d version, but I wouldn't mind 3d making a bit of a comeback if used with more restraint this time. Not like last time where every other screening was 3d and it was the pointless 3d that looked shit and gave you eye fatigue.

I saw Gravity in 3d years ago and it blew my mind, everything looked so physical. Every other 3d film I saw looked like shit in comparison. I know 3d was annoying a lot of the time but for a rollercoaster of a movie like Gravity it really did elevate it imo, I want to see that version of the film again.

Not Avatar 2 though, it's way too long. 3d's impact starts to wear off after about 45 minutes

I still haven't seen the first film...🤣

Watch this instead:

I'm not joking by the way, it's basically the same storyline but less pretentious. Ferngully is the reason why I've always found Avatar a bit disappointing. It has a nice setting and universe but does nothing original with it.

Don't , it's shit

I'll stick with this advice...🤣

I think at the time I was just not interested in the whole 3D gimmick that was going through cinema and TV... and the shit blue aliens didn't help either, say what you will but Optimus Prime kicks their ass every time.😊

Avatar was pretty to look at. That was it's main selling point. Everything else was generic as hell and forgettable. I don't know how it will fare in a post-3D cinema though?
