Bloodstained Ritual of the Night

This is quite cool.

It's a spiritual sequel to Symphony of the Night, probably not officially but it feels immediately familiar aesthetically and aurally. I know the Metroidvania market has been saturated but this is Koji Igarashi man,  this is what he does.

I've chucked about 2 hours in so far, i've beaten two bosses and found a few warp points, shit is starting to open up. Like SotN, you equip armour and weapons which can be bought or found. Unlike SotN, your character Miriam changes her appearence to reflect what she's wearing.

When you kill enemies thay can randomly drop shards which can be used to attack, to interact with objects for progress or passively like a power increase or summink.

Miriam moves a little ploddishly, her jumps are long and she hangs in the air but she can move around before she hits the floor. I've been mostly using big two handed weapons and they have a slight delay before they swing which is fine once you get used to it. And the more you play the more you get used to how she moves, it feels good to me now.

Otherwise it's Castlevania business as usual, piss-arsing around a massive map, looking for abilities, praying for save rooms and kicking ass.

I'm a few hours in, I think I've done 3 bosses now? I've just got the big hand skill at any rate. The point I'm at now it's really starting to show itself, I've started to get passive abilities (shards) and familiars (also shards) (all the magic is shards, it's like Order of Ecclesia)

Miriam seems to be moving a little quicker now too unless I'm just imagining it, it could just be I've switched from a claymore to a fast sword. I did pick up a magic whip using an 8-bit coin that I found *  I've stopped using it because it naturally swings down and a lot of enemies are above you, which is something the claymore was good for. I'm also now throwing 5 bats at people and my sword familiar is starting to get useful, I like that they level up too

Spoiler

at the castle don't drop the drawbridge, instead go underneath and left

I do have questions though. I bought some rice seeds because that's apparently how you make rice for a quest, but I can't work out how to grow it. There's also a skill you get that lets you save loadouts, only I can't workout how to save loadouts, you got that yet @illdog

Yep, I got that skill and I don’t know how to use it either. It says hold down the L trigger and one of the sticks to select a slot. Next thing I know I’ve managed to unequip absolutely everything.

Your’e further than me now @DANGERMAN, I’m on the hunt for the giant hand. Hey, speaking of giants, I don’t suppose that third boss is a rather large crustacean in an elevator?

I've been playing this for four hours straight now, i'm at 42.50% map completion. Fought some pretty cool bosses, got the double jump. It feels good right now but i was stuck for a solid hour, completely missed something that stopped me from progressing.

Spoiler

The twin dragon boss on the tower was pretty darn cool.

Switch version is meant to only be 30fps

I'm stuck where I assume you were @illdog . Been all over, either need to be able to fly sideways, bounce off specialised platforms, have a thing to get past a barrier or be able to swim.

I can now turn in to a bunny girl, and I've solved my rice problem. If you go left rather than right from the hub (so back to the ship) there's a farmer who will plant stuff, and a nun whose first quest rewards you with rice

edit: solved it. I did get a note from the church woman to go to a certain area, but it was framed as the skill I needed was there when actually it's the person you need to talk to that is

So, i got a Game Over screen which I didn't expect at all.

Reloaded my save and went in a different direction. Now, my biggest beef with the game so far his been it's lack of direction, not that it was a big gripe, just if i was going to pick one. Now, i'm gonna put this in spoilers but it's regarding swimming incase it's something you need help with..

Spoiler

I thought this was bullshit. It's obvious the only thing left to do was swim underwater but I explored the catacombs as it were and no boss, no item, fuck all. Another hours pissing around and I was getting pretty frustrated and I had to look it up for my own sanity. It turns out the ability to swim is a shard you get randomly from jellfish. An essential item as a random drop with no clue? Did i miss something?

Be careful around the 1.02 patch, which is only available on PS4 at the moment. There's a high chance it'll lock away a chest you'll need to open to finish the game. So either don't download any patches for this for the time being or, if you haven't started playing yet, wait until 1.02 is installed before you start your game.

Xbox will get the update next week, so be prepared. The Switch version will launch with the 1.02 as a Day One patch.

illdog was telling me about this. I don't understand tbh, I'm on PS4 and have 1.02 so am I ok?

Played a lot of this today. I was talking to ill about where we'd both got stuck, having to have items and speak to people, I've not had the same issue since. Now it's the more familiar experience of looking which rooms I haven't entered or haven't got all the way through on the map then heading there.

I did get the game over illdog mentioned, a bit unneeded but I suppose that's a symphony reference. I got the ability to propel myself underwater which was fun, coupled with a shard that gives you health back while your underwater. Enjoyed it but couldn't open any of the chests, then after I'd got all the way through I got a shard that meant I could sink to the bottom and loot the chests, so had to do the trek again. There's also weirdly few save points in that area, you have to teleport out, save then come back

Still enjoying it a lot but I've put a lot of time in to it very quickly

I’m at the end now, the final boss battle is available but I’ve decided to go back through the whole map and uncover everything I can.

Overall this game is excellent, it’s not often I pump 15 hours in to a game in two days.

It does have issues though. Tips for progress are sometimes given in the form of cryptic clues that are told to you once and that’s it. No way to look it back up and I lack the patience to explore everywhere multiple times.

Also, key items are not always given to you after a boss fight, they are hidden in chests or worse, as a random shard drop from an enemy.

That aside, I’m now fully powered up I think so as far as I can tell I can overcome any obstacle in my path. There have been some locked doors that required a named key, like in Resi and I’ve found two of those on my travels so far. I love this part of this type of game, roaming around as a god, one hitting most things and remembering the times when they gave you a ton of trouble. Still there’s one area that is fucking dangerous still and one of the doors I can unlock is there (I think).

I'm  Level 36 and at exactly 99% map completion, thats 10 rooms to find.

I have a probem in that I have a Millionaire's Key but the Millionaire Door wont open, saying that a Millionaire Key is required. Which i have. So that sucks. I've sent a report to ArtPlay, hopefully i'm not alone. The room in tha door will be 0.10% so i need a fix.

So I decided not to get the Switch version and have just bought it on PS4 (partly because of the 30fps thing, but mostly because I’m an impatient bastard).

Looking forward to starting it as I love Symphony of the Night, so more of that is very welcome. Also just found out that some abilities require Street Fighter style inputs to perform, which has got me quite giddy (but not quite sure why).

I never use them, although I accidentally triggered a counter move and it was really powerful so maybe I should be using it more

I'm stuck again. I've got the invert and I can see the area I probably need to go but I've no idea how to open it up

Edit: moment of truth, apparently the thing I need to do is the bit the patch broke...

It was fine. In some ways I'm annoyed I googled where to go but it saved me some annoyance, and I'd have probably found it just because I was going to clear all the map.

I got to the new area, there's a ramp up in enemies but the more annoying thing is the lack of save room so far. Oh well, I'm going to buy some snacks then chug through the rest of the game. It'll either be finished today or tomorrow

The lack of direction sounds really old school IE NES Castlevania. It is one of the things they thankfully improved on as the series went on. I'm liking the sound of Bloodstained, from what I've read. I'll add it to the list of Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Ultimate Alliance 3 that I aim to get in the next couple months.
