It is rare that both parts are good though. In most modern games that have both, the multiplayer is a cash grab tagged onto the actual game. It doesn't enhance the overall package. Which is an implication of the quote.

The best ever single player “mode”?

 

Did a gamer write that question lol... The answers are countless but the game that came to mind was San Andreas so I’ll go with that.

I'm a majority single player mode type of gamer myself and to narrow this down is all but impossible... there's been far too many over the year's.

 

The early RE games, Metal Gear Solid, FFVIII, Dead Space 1&2, The Last of Us... I could go on and on.

In regards to last week’s question, I’m pretty evenly split between the FF7 Remake and Cyberpunk 2077, but we know a lot about those already (although I’ve only fast forwarded through the gameplay demos of Cyberpunk). In terms of games we know less about, I’m excited for Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild 2.

In a spin off from last week’s question, what does being excited for video games mean anymore? There used to be a time when I had genuine excitement for stuff and was super eager to looking forward to a game’s release. But now it’s like whatever. It’ll get here when it gets here. Like I’m still a big enough kid that I want to play with the toys but I’ve also outgrown them enough that if tomorrow there was an announcement that every new game coming had it’s release date suspended by a year I’d be like well that’s a very odd coincidence but Ok. 

 

A few months ago listening to the Beastcast they were talking about the FF7 remake and someone said “Can it possibly live up to people’s expectations?” And then Alex said “Of course not. It’s just a video game”. And taking FF7 remake out of the point I’m kind of like that. The hype will be like “There’s this super awesome new video game out” and it’s just like “And I’m sure it’ll be like all the ones that came before”. 

 

The only time I really get pumped for video games is E3. But that’s a mix of I take a week off work every year which is nice, the whole spectacle of it, and the mystery of what might be shown which is always almost more fun than what is actually shown. 

 

This sounds like a real downer post. It’s not meant to be. I still love video games, but I also love some nice cooked food and some nice clean drawers. What does being excited for video games mean when you’re 30+?

I think dmc5 is the most excited I have ever been for a video game. That's at age 29, turning 30 tomorrow, so it's possible

 

Ffvii seems fine but playing the demo honestly made me feel like it could be better with new characters and an original story. Hell, set it in the universe of FFVII but with the Turks or something.

 

Answering the question about viir in particular tho I found it kind of anticlimactic, considering what I'd imagine that game to be like. It's just a video game

I know what you mean there @Maf as recently I realized I was in the same boat... I think the the process of a games announcement and the lead up to release is actually more exciting than playing the games nowadays.

 

Take Gears 5, now I'm having fun and can tell it's a great game... Am I excited for it? No, I don't think I am. The same can be said about pretty much any game I've bought recently. I think the last game I had a genuine "oh my god, it's here and I'm playing it" moment was Resident Evil 2... I also think the next time I'm actually going to get that is if the rumoured Resident Evil 3 remake is announced to be real...

I only seem to think of gaming now as a time sink. Not in a negative way but I was playing Rogue Legacy, really enjoying it. Then I'd think, I'd got errands to run and put it down to do them. Not a mindset I had during my gaming heyday, certainly one I have now.

I dunno, that still kind've sounds negative, like you're only doing it cuz there's nothing better to do. 

 

I'll admit that gaming is far and away the biggest hobby in my life, it's what I go to when I have the spare time to allow it... If you can't put things like this down when there's real life things to deal with then it's progressed to something a little less healthy.

 

I think I'm still on the right side of things, I'm sure the Missus would have something to say if I strayed too far the other way.?

I can see that. But what I mean is, in the moment I really enjoy gaming, like I used to. Yet it isn't all consuming like it used to be. I used to really get involved in the games I played. I'd be thinking about them all day. The best equivalent I had with Rogue Legacy was " lets see if I can beat that boss today". Whereas previously, for example with Silent Hill 2, after watching the infamous video tape scene, I'd be replaying cutscenes and dialogue options in my head. Seeing it all with new context.

I think it’s an age thing, lately I’m quite happy watching the cycling....Masterchef Australia, impractical jokers....gaming seems an extra something I can do but choose not to very often.

 

I think as I get older it gets less and less time, although I miss games™ which spiked my interest for gaming more. Saying that the last game I was truly invested in was Zelda it was just immense!

I think there's also fewer 'new' experiences and fewer leaps than there were when we were kids. I remember the Dreamcast coming out and what a leap that was, even the excitement around the 360. This gen the consoles and the games didn't feel like much of a step up at launch

Feel the same here. I rarely get that excited about games anymore. The times where I do, I end up being disappointed usually. 

I’m far more cynical about gaming now too. Feel far too aware of the business side and every game feels in some part like I’ve played it before in some fashion. Much more a fan of shorter, smaller games these days. They have a much bigger effect on me and feel like I just don’t have much time for “big” games anymore. My spare gaming time is far less reliable. 

Plus, I’m just always tired nowadays and can’t be arsed to play games anymore  most of the time.
