One that comes to mind was being able to collect the Triforce in Ocarina of Time.

It didn't help that the emblem was greyed out on the main quest collection menu. Considering everything else was initially greyed out too.

I'm struggling with this, I think I always knew that you weren't going to be seeing Chin Li or Laura Croft naked, but I probably did believe some story about a secret character in Mortal Kombat or whatever

I remember going to a friends and he was putting coins on his SNES to weigh down the cart to get blood to work on MK. I always thought that was mad silly at the start, but some people were insistent it was real.

There’s only 2 sure-fire ways to catch a Pokemon. Hold down + B when the ball clicks or look away from the screen and pretend you’re not bothered. Reverse psychology that RNG

The only one I can think of is Yoshi being playable in Mario 64. Which was helped by the fact you can find him on the roof when 100% the game.

Oh, and mashing buttons on the loading screens made games load faster

I remember this scene in Fantasy World Dizzy, when he drifts off to sea, I was convinced you could follow him somehow. Although, I’m not even sure if I’m remembering it correctly…

The desire sensor in Monster Hunter knows what you are trying to craft and avoids dropping mats you need. I remember playing MH3U and we must have fought Brachydios 50 times or more before my co-op partner was like "I've had enough, fuck trying to get this weapon!"

For me it was definitely one of the Mew stories, either the one where it was supposed to be under the truck or related to the Missingno glitch. The funny thing about is that there is a true glitch to find it but that only got discovered (or shared) decades later.

I also remember someone mention that Lei could shoot his gun in Tekken 2, and because we were too dumb to find out about movelists and too awful to try out everything we all simply believed it.

The Missingo thing was real back then if you used a Action Replay. I always thought it was some unfinished Pokemon and its real name was Missingno. The bit that dawned on me literally decades later is it’s Missing No, for missing number

You didn't need an action replay, there's a sequence of events you do to cause it. I'm not sure exactly but it's got something to do with talking to the old man who teaches you how to catch stuff, then you fly somewhere, I think, and then you go to cinnabar island and swim up and down the coast and it appears.

Basically, it's got something to do with the old man catching the pidgey and how that fucks around with the game's memory management, the list it maintains of all the pokemon. Maybe one of those stack overflow type of things.

As mentioned, there is a similar glitch (maybe works the same way) for Mew, which you can use to catch it at the nugget bridge. I did it on one of the digital re-releases, the glitch was only discovered relatively recently (like, 10 years ago recently, but way after the original release)

The cinnabar island thing is the way to do it, but I remember getting my action replay - specifically to get Mew. But there were a list of codes like infinite Pokeballs and stuff like that, and one of them was Missingno

To clarify I didn’t know the cinnabar glitch back in the day, that was something I read later as well. But I do remember cheating a lot and catching Missingno as a kid

Here's the technical explanation, pretty interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MissingNo.

MissingNo is basically an error instantiated into a pokemon cause they didn't handle it right

These events manipulate the game's random encounter system to generate a Pokémon with an invalid identifier. Each area within the game assigns values to a data buffer to represent the Pokémon that can be encountered in that area. However, some areas—such as Cinnabar Island—do not overwrite the data in this buffer, so the data from the previous area is used instead. During the Viridian City in-game tutorial, the player character's name is temporarily overridden to read "OLD MAN", and the player character's actual name is temporarily copied to that same data buffer. If the player travels directly to Cinnabar Island after viewing this tutorial, the player character's name will be read as the Pokémon that can be randomly encountered in that area. Due to the player character's name not being intended to be read as this kind of data, the game can attempt to generate an encounter with a Pokémon with an invalid identifier, such as MissingNo.[9][10] Fans have dubbed this method of encountering MissingNo. the "old man glitch".[9][11]

Yeah, I know Missingo is real and I did it back in the day in the OG game on the Game Boy, but it only lead to a duplicating items glitch, not to Mew.

I think being really bad at a game really affects my enjoyment, so there's not going to be many. The first that came to mind was stuff like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but I wasn't terrible at them, I just wasn't good enough to consistently put stuff on hard.

I suppose something like Quake 3, where I might have been ok, but in real terms to other people playing it I would have been dreadful, but then if I'd been playing against people at that level I would have hated it.

There's a couple of specific ones I suppose. Disgaea, I never really got to grips with the stacking mechanic, I could never get my head around it, and you need to from time to time, so I'd always hit a bit of a wall in those games purely because I was playing them 'wrong'.  Similarly the Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner games, they're Srpg games, and there's clearly some mechanic I miss with those as I hit a wall whenever I try to play them

Oh, and Culdcept, although I think the cpu might just cheat on those games and they're meant for multiplayer?

I really like X-Com style games though I’m not good at them. In particular I love Midnight Suns and Mario + Rabbids even though it takes a lot of retries and ages for me to make a move. Even though I’m bad at them, I have gotten a bit better now so want to go back and try the Gears tactic game again. Similarly I want to get into Fire Emblem and FF Tactics on the Switch.

I like fighting games but don’t have the imagination for them. I’ve never successfully thought of a good idea all by myself and just steal tech from good players. It’s why I’m easy to beat because once my handful of tricks that I endlessly flowchart are revealed I’m pretty much done. Once the opponent adapts to me I can’t adapt back.

Maybe the no.1 game I suck ass at but still like is F-Zero GX. I can not play the game to save my life, but it’s hype

The more I think about it the more my answer could be any game which isn’t a 2D platformer

Wipeout came to mind (F-Zero, too). Unlike Mario Kart, I never gained any proficiency at it. Loved the future aesthetic/soundtrack though.

Taking Fighting Games online is definitely something I tried at and never gelled with. Fighting the CPU or even against friends locally (in the past) I can manage. The latter, my friends were roughly within my skill level. Taking a Fighter online brought the saying "big fish in a small pond" to mind.

I guess having a very slow and linear mental stack in a fighting game is the only answer I can think to this, but it's also what causes me to step away from them and feel dissatisfied at times.

I just don't get much from games if I feel I'm bad in a way that I can't address, or am not willing to. There's got to be some form of gradual improvement happening or I drop it, usually really quickly. I did that with HiFi Rush.

there's probably a lot of types of games i'm rubbish at, like most turn based combat games, especially persona style ones but i still like them. and fighting games like dmc3.

Rocket League. One of my favourite games of all time but I’ve reached my skill ceiling on it & it’s just not good enough. Still love it though.

Sekiro - Another on my favourite games of all time list. I didn’t realise just how bad I was until I watched other people play it though. I struggled so much more than anyone else I’ve seen play it.

Rest of mine are mostly genre based.

Turn based strategy games - stuff like Disgaea, FF tactics, X-Com etc. I love these games but I’m really bad at them.

Fighting game - Same as everyone else really. They’re great but I’ve never been above novice at them no matter how much I play them.
