I kind've disagree with this... 3 to me says borderline broken which Isolation plainly isn't. You can't score a game on preference in my opinion otherwise I'd give every Mario game ever a 2. 😉

I think principally you can absolutely give Mario a 2.  If you can justify it in an interesting, informative or entertaining way I may even appreciate it.  It's the readers choice to bother taking you seriously or just think you're a dick.  But what I'm getting at is there shouldn't be a demand you fall in line with all the SNES kids.

I still can't agree... you can be as witty as you like but if the whole thing hinges on "it's not my bag" then it's not good enough and shouldn't be used as an excuse to fuck over a game.

I think iconoclastic takes are really interesting tbh, sometimes the accepted canon can just lead to uncritical groupthink. Like if someone makes a strong argument for Citizen Kane being crap, and I mean an argument that isn't just "it's boring and old and in black and white" then I'm always interested in reading stuff like that.

Mario is one of gaming's Kanes I reckon so the 2/10 review could be just as interesting.

Games require too much input from the user. Mechanics, game feel, responsiveness etc. all matter in games. Games can be broken. It’s not just what the game is. Whereas tv, film and music are all passive and can be interpreted almost anyway you like and can be viewed in a much more subjective matter.

There’s an underlying mechanical quality to games like Mario where the basics are right so even if it’s not for you (the recent 3D ones have really disappointed me for example) you cant really give it a bad score still.

I am playing through The Messenger currently and it's a game that I am wondering why it was so well received, because it's the very definition of OK. Same with Hyperlight Drifter which I played earlier this year.

I could talk to some lengths about both of these games. Will I convince anyone to my point of view if they've already played? Probably not. Ergo it's sort of pointless talking about anything unless you're just putting your thoughts down so you can read them back at a later date.

People don't give a fuck what you think and neither should you give a fuck what they think. Play what you want. Like what you want. You don't need to fit in to a society that are misfits anyway.

Nag says... "With all three major platform holders having had their first shows of the year how are we looking in terms of games and announcements? Do you feel 2025 is going to be great gaming year? Has there been anything particularly surprising announced that we didn't see coming?"

The first 6 months do look quite good actually. Especially from Xbox. No great surprises for 2025 as yet but looks decent enough. Most months have got something im really interested in trying at least.

Obviously still don’t know what’s coming from Nintendo really. But they’re not my type of games anyway so don’t see them swinging it either way for me personally.

Well, Nintendo hasn't really shown anything yet this year, except their new hardware. I have rather high hopes for their initial Switch 2 lineup because their last big game came out in 2023 and some series have been dormant for a significantly longer period. How much of that they're willing to blow in 2025 is another question of course, but we'll at least get to see Metroid Prime 4 and that's all I need really.

Xbox seems to be doing fine now as well, which is such poor timing considering the multiplat approach. But I doubt I'll play much of their stuff due to their release policies ('don't ever press a disc and if you do, make sure it barely holds any game code'). I think Fable is due for this year, which will be interesting. I get the feeling that'll either be a milestone or a complete trainwreck after all that time.

Sony is in hibernation, nothing to see here anyway.

Will probably be an interesting year overall, but I also don't quite get this year-by-year thing people do, like saying 2024 was weak (which I don't agree with at all). As if everything released beforehand somehow disappeared.

Edit: surprising announcement, Ninja Gaiden 4 for sure. Would never have believed that series to return in this form, I thought the 2D game was all they'd be willing to risk.

Whatever I've got my eye on this year I'll be due to play in 2027. Avowed, Assassin's creed, fable, gta6, even that unfancied dragons age game. Should be a good year.

Actually my eldest has been using my Xbox account to play Cod with his dumb mates, so I might be able to play Avowed.

To the great surprise of no-one at all it's Microsoft I'm most interested in but not for the normal reasons... I've got to admit I'm really eager to see what they do in regards to PlayStation releases, I'm not in the complete doom and gloom mindset that most Xbox users are (yet) and I actually feel fairly excited to see where and how far this goes.

I also think we'll get some fairly solid info on some kind of new hardware from them this year... we'll see.

I barley remember/know about anything that’s coming out these days, so had a look at a list, there’s a few things I would like to try but will probably wait till they come down in price a bit, like the new assassins creed, pirate yakuza, and monster hunter. There’s loads of stuff I don’t know about too hopefully some good surprises in there. I’ll get xenoblade x but not sure if I’ll play it. I’ll play Metroid, and hopefully there will be some good stuff at the switch 2 launch.

yeah, I've got Pirate Yakuza on the way. I thought there were a few games in the Sony show that looked decent, maybe not the sort of thing you remember for a thread like this, but that claymation game, Onimusha (if that's this year), that Chinese game that's similar to Devil May Cry, the one from the GTA guy that was towards the end. Avowed has just come out, I've not really seen anything of it yet, but I could see that clicking

It seems to me like there's plenty of good looking games coming out this year. GTA6, assuming that still comes this year, will bury everything, but that's not a series I care for so there'll be stuff for me to play instead at least

Geralt and Yennefer in Witcher 3 if you don't chose being romantically involved with her. Navigating the post-breakup landscape is something you barely ever see in videogames and I think they did an excellent job with that. Though in fairness I have no point of comparison as I haven't seen the other possibility.

Haven I think also had a nice lovebird duo. As did The Gunk, which unfortunately was a bit of a forgettable game, but the fact that I remember it for this must mean it did something right.

I think the common thread here is also that the relationships in all of those games started pre-game, so they weren't some kind of questline with XP and sex at the end. That said, while it does fall a bit into that trap in the first game, I've always liked the Liara romance in the ME trilogy, especially the part when you help her navigate through the Shadow Broker substory. The deeper relationship between your Shepard and her adds a little extra to that.
