Maryokutai
Was about to mention Jansen as well. I'll always remember that one scene where the boy from your party is possessed by a demon and starts making weird noises which Jansen just comments with 'Puberty's weird.' There's a lot of RPG characters I could mention, so I'm just going with an underdog from Tales of the Abyss here: Looks like one of these lovable animal stereotypes everyone wants to cuddle but in a really funny spin on the trope the entire party just treats him like shit. But he just keeps playing the role of the cutesy sidekick with devotion. Then there's the best version of one of the most well-known sidekicks of the 2000s: Before this is all over, promise me you'll figure out which one of us is the machine. Halo started out like some power fantasy for teenage boys with the emotional maturity expected from that target audience, but the ending of 4 still is as fresh in my mind as when I played it for the first time and it's 100% because of how well-written Cortana's character arc was in that game.
Nag
I love Cortana in 4... that ending is probably the closest I've come to shedding a tear while gaming.
Metroid66
Good idea for question. Have you ever shed a tear (or suffered a tremorous lower lip) while gaming. I've got 2🥹

Man, I love KotOR and really want to play those games again. I might try one more time to mod them on PC again this year, if not I’ll just settle for the Switch versions

Nag
Quote @Metroid66 says "Have you ever shed a tear (or suffered a tremorous lower lip) while gaming" So as Metroid66 says... any games hit you in the feels?
shinymcshine
Remembered doing something along this theme before, and mine still stands (albeit my dad is no longer around).
Maryokutai
Yeah, those moments that overlap with your personal life will always result in the strongest responses. I had a similar moment when playing Memoir Blue, whose central theme is the sometimes good, sometimes rocky relationship of the protagonist and her mother. My mother wasn't doing particularly well at that time and I wasn't there for her as much as I could and should have been, so that was an emotional whirlwind I never experienced in a game before. There have been other games, without that personal link, that left me a bit empty and drained at certain moments. The finale of Life is Strange ('The Big Rewind'), which made me stop playing games for a few days because I was unable to step into another narrative. Halo 4's ending, which is still so weird to say because of the series' history, but that was an excellent execution of the idea of a hollow victory. Some of the short stories in Lost Odyssey, particularly the one with the shoemaker, were quite tough to swallow at times, too.
DANGERMAN
I haven't, yet. Coming out was the first time I've cried since I was about 14, even when I was going through some pretty dark moments at uni. Last summer seemed to break a seal though and I'm way more emotional now than I was, probably a very easy diagnosis for a therapist, but I'm now getting upset at songs I've listened to for years. So, at some point, something is going to make me cry again and there's every chance it will be a game The closest I've come, and it's my go to answer for loads of stuff in this topic, To The Moon. There's a moment, the people on here that have played it will know which bit, where the penny drops on some stuff right because the actual reveal. You're still made to go through the reveal and all of a sudden the character and some of his relationships make sense Spoiler the bit where your twin brother dies. That my mum constantly gets mine and my brother's names the wrong way around might have helped Anyway, I remember that stopping me in my tracks. There's probably been a few games like that. The end of Valiant Hearts would be up there too, very sad
mfnick
I’ve definitely been upset at games but can’t remember shedding a tear although I’m sure I have. Especially recently. As Mary points out when it overlaps at all with your personal life it’s different. Had a couple of deaths within my close family in the last couple of years & it’s definitely affected how I respond to media. I never used to cry or get upset at anything now it happens quite easily especially in films. I can’t pinpoint it happening in a game though even though I know it has. Edit - just checked my completed games and managed to remember a few; Persona 3 Reload ending hit me. LAD Man Who Erased His Name the bit with the tablet. & Infinite Wealth - just Kiryus story here hit close to home. Jusant - any little animal friend will get to me. Some may seem silly but yea, they tugged at my heart strings and worked. They an absolutely wouldn’t have worked on me a couple of years ago though. Funny how things changed. one-armed dwarf
I think the FFVII Remake games use their music in really interesting ways given how they're in direct dialogue with the original game, which is designed to trigger emotion rebirth end spoilers Spoiler The irony then in the final scenes of Rebirth being a bunch of tedious MCU-style complicated plot mechanics, so it has the exact opposite effect. Talk about a deflating end to all that build up Going to stick with Final Fantasy and say that when they get into Emet Selch's backstory in Shadowbringers FFXIV it is really impactful cause you understand his convictions but you have to stop him anyway. They just sort of nailed the story of that particular expansion, shame they didn't keep that energy for FFXVI. Outside of this weeb shit I dunno, I haven't found a video game that deals with serious subject matter in a super developed and mature way, it all can end up feeling a bit YA but maybe I'm missing the right games (I know FF is YA as well, but I'm just going to be a hypocrit about it and ain't nobody gonna stop me lol)
HandsomeDead
I don't get teary at sad stuff, I just tend to shut down which will require some therapy sessions to find out why, but sentimental stuff can get it out of me and Persona 3 worked like a charm and maybe even Xenoblade. Weeb stuff does tend to more often go for that sentimental style of story.
Sly Reflex
Never cried, but I've been a bit frustrated or perforated by events in games. The aspergers girl sitting alone after being bullied in school in To The Moon is one. That game is full of stuff like that, it's a game where you will feel bad at some point. RDR2. There's a few things here. Spoiler There's a lot of death in this game. Hosea getting done was like what the fuck man, really, out of all the bastards here you go for the one good man? Arthur putting his horse down at the end of the game. I rode that horse for miles and miles and as stupid as it seems had grown really attached to it, so to see it get hurt like that after all the times it had been hurt and this time not get back up, that really hurt. And then finally there's a load of little things that happen that occur under John that reflect back to Arthur. It won't let those scars of mourning heal over, it just constantly picks at them. It's rending.
Metroid66
Amaterasu Spoiler leaving issun and ascending back to heaven at the end of okami has got my eyes a bit moist on both of my playthrus. And there was this quest in Yakuza 3 where (I think) you had to rescue a mute girl from her cruel mother and return her to her uncle. I can't quite remember why, but that one got to me. I'd have to play it again to find out. It actually might be time to launch a Yakuza series replay.
Nag
Well that's just ruined the Okami ending for me...😭😭
spatular
I get emotional at tv/films quite often, seemingly more so than I used to, not sure why/getting old? Games I’m not sure, can’t remember any specific examples but wouldn’t be surprised if there were some.
