Maryokutai
A third of AAA developers present at GDC are working on live service games: https://gdconf.com/news/gdc-2025-state-game-industry-devs-weigh-layoffs-ai-and-more Quote One in every three AAA developers surveyed (33%) noted that they are working on a live-service title. Across the entire survey base, 16% are currently working on a live-service game, and while 13% noted they are interested in developing live service games, 41% expressed that they were not interested at all. Sounds like a lot more than what has been releasing these last years, but that might just be subjective. It looks a bit more reasonable when you look at the entire spectrum (16%) but still, can't believe the interest keeps being there despite so many high profile flops (though this was polled before the recent Bluepoint/Bend news). Nag
I'm glad that the not interested at all percentage is relatively high... I'm guessing most of those who are developing live service games don't really have a lot of choice in what those games are in any case?
DANGERMAN
A chunk of them may well be working on stuff that's already out. I get the impression they take a lot of manpower
shinymcshine
Article about the Video Game History Foundation and a move to create a digital archive of video games magazines from yesteryear. I love a nostalgic look back at old games, reviews and features - but as I often found with Retrogamer it's then quite problematic to actually get hold of many of the actual games to play (a problem that's not been addressed within the industry, even if more recent titles) - so maybe that ought to be addressed by publishers / licence holders etc too. Then again nostalgia does often come with a warm rose tinted glow, so maybe those gaming memories of the past are, in many cases, best left as just memories. https://www.theguardian.com/games/2025/jan/28/video-game-history-foundation-digitised-archive-games-magazines
radiofloyd Posted Tuesday at 02:08 Share Posted Tuesday at 02:08 Civilization 7 reviews: Destructoid - 9 Gamespot - 8 PC Gamer - 76% IGN - 7 Eurogamer - 2/
DANGERMAN Posted Tuesday at 17:03 Share Posted Tuesday at 17:03 eesh, that's a shame. Without reading the reviews, it does seem like they always get criticised for starting fresh, losing some of the features that came from DLC. Personally, it's one of those series I kind of got what I wanted from with the 1 entry, I've never managed to get back in to it since
Maryokutai Posted Thursday at 13:27 Share Posted Thursday at 13:27 This looks cool, and it's made by the guys behind the bit.trip series. From what I understand it was planned for that Amico system that never came out, so I'm happy to see it not disappear in the digital void. The flipped screen seems a bit weird at first, but at least on Switch it's an easy fix.

shinymcshine Posted Friday at 08:47 Share Posted Friday at 08:47 Haven't played this for years, but it's pretty hugely disappointing news for some:
Nag Posted Friday at 09:55 Share Posted Friday at 09:55 Most football fans are used to being disappointed on a weekly basis so I'm sure they'll be fine.😉
Maryokutai Posted Friday at 10:08 Share Posted Friday at 10:08 It's obviously gone through the PR wringer, but still refreshingly transparent. I don't know how popular FM is these days but it used to be one of SEGA's most consistent money makers, so someone internally must have fought really strongly for this to avoid tarnishing the IPs reputation with a botched release. Good on them.

Maryokutai Posted Saturday at 16:56 Share Posted Saturday at 16:56 Yup, and if Shatter didn't exist I wouldn't be interested in this because standard Brakeout is a bit boring IMO. But it's a surprisingly good template for wacky stuff as it turns out.
