That is the most millennial of millennial lists ever made. Except for Fortnite, which is probably in there because one of the two authors has a kid. Not that that's a bad thing but it seems put together by a very limited range of perspectives and opinions.

I don’t think it’s a bad list at all. Particularly the lower half seems better than most dedicated gaming outlet lists IMO. Top half has the usual suspects so whatever.

As usual though, fuck Tetris. Boring shite.

Kinda a list for normies isn't it.

What even is it about Fallout 3 anyway.

Quote

RPGs had met first-person shooters before, but Fallout 3 brought unseen complexity and a high risk/reward factor to every decision, whether it’s pickpocketing or deciding the fate of an entire city. By telling a player-driven narrative that retains a satirical undercurrent throughout, Fallout 3 paired the best parts of its predecessors and expanded into a more immersive and engrossing world. The industry has been chasing its unique blend of humor and pathos ever since. -C.C.

It's a little triggering when they just exclude things such as any entries for; music games (GH / RB); isometric CRPGs; point & click adventures; driving/racing; SHUMPs; and quite surprised there's no Tomb Raider titles.

Yep, you're always on a hiding to nothing when you do one of these lists....

My only problem with BotW being #1 is TotK exists. TotK is literally the same but better in every single way. The only thing BotW has over its sequel is its quieter, less manic and first impression.

But it’s not like TotK doesn’t have quiet spaces to explore or have more impressive things in it

Thing is with these lists is trying to make up some meaningful reason why game Z is placed in 27th place and game Y is 29th... by that point (unless there's some meaningful metric you're measuring) you're just talking bollocks.

Whoever said it's uninspired is probably right. The biggest surprise is that it's not Breath of the Wild, Ocarina and Mario 64 as a top 3, it's a boring list, but that's why it's fine I suppose. I'd expect almost every game there to be on a list like this even if I don't think they should be

Mad that Smash is there, and I say that as someone who likes the series. It's fine. The authors should maybe spend some more time with non-Nintendo stuff

I think Celeste is the only game I'm surprised was there but the rest are very typical normie favourites.  The big outlet aggregated g.o.a.t lists are a bit empty of purpose most of the time and having lists with a bit more criteria are more compelling (e.g year, system, genre).  Even when I've thought of my own g.o.a.t lists they are hugely driven by my whims in the moment.

I would put 6 of those games in my own list for sure.

Fallout 3

FF VII

Hades

Hollow Knight

Metroid Prime

The Witcher 3

There are a handful (5-10) that I haven’t played that would probably be in my list if I get around to them.

Breath of the Wild and Chrono Trigger might be in my list, not sure. Undeniably, both are easy games to recommend. But 50 is a short list.

I’d like to replay GTAV from the start as I never finished it.

As for games I would take out, aside from jokey entries like Wii Sports, I would take out BG3, Elden Ring, Mass Effect 2 and Skyrim.

Online games (MMOs etc) are are really difficult one to classify (re. 'best of...' lists) as it might wholly depend when in their lifecycle you played them - as you experience & enjoyment often wholly depends upon the behaviours & attitudes of others.

I recall really loving Guild Wars for it's first few years, until the player base started turning somewhat toxic, and people started dropping out of runs if they didn't get a certain drop etc (feel that Rocket League too went downhill from an initial excitement, when team members quit if they were losing).

So there's loads of examples where, at some point of time, they were peak fun, but other time truly awful and often somewhat inaccessible for newcomers.

Guild Wars was great until people figured it out and didn't want you to play anything other than the ideal class combinations and skills. Until then it was responsible for some of my most awful scores in school and I still get nostalgic goosebumps when listening to its superb soundtrack.

But it's really difficult with lists like these to differentiate between impact, timelessness or temporary excellence, in addition to subjective perspectives and such. I agree with HD that lists with specific outlines that limit themselves are more interesting to look at as a result.

Been seeing more and more articles popping up saying "there's hope from the industry" that GTA VI sells for $80/$100 (which will obviously mean the same in pounds for us because... reasons) and it ushers in a new pay hike for game prices across the board...

What do people think about maybe another price rise on the cards?

£70 is already too high. Again, inflation gets brought up but that doesn’t matter when the median wage when adjusted for inflation is worse than 15 years ago. Doesn’t matter when profiteering is the main issue.

Also games costs are spiralling mostly due to marketing, CEO salaries and paying for all those cancelled trend chasing GAAS shit. - https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2025-01-10/why-so-many-video-games-cost-so-much-to-make?embedded-checkout=true

How about reducing those losses before asking me to pay more? How about CEOs getting a slightly lower millionaires salary before taking more of my dwindling money?

Fuck this right off. Fuck gaming if that happens. Or more accurately - I’ll completely drop AAA games. They’re already being designed in a way that’s not for me anymore. This just means I’ll be done with them fully.

I think I’ll be buying mine from Eneba and save £££s on Xbox thank you.

I think that's no doubt.  A lot of the first couple of years are gonna be riding on portable versions of last gen games (and because of the way things are, this gen tbh).  Much like how the Switch filled out it's lineup with Wii U games.

Even in the early days of the Wii U there were Ubisoft AAA as well as the occasional other.  And Japanese developers will be all in on it (Final Fantasy and Persona/Metaphor and RPGs generally for sure).
