Brace yourselves, Godzilla posted a mysterious countdown

Quote

Godzilla vs. Kong was one of 2021’s most hyped and anticipated films, showing that the king of the monsters is still a mighty pop-culture figure. However, since Godzilla vs. Kong came out, kaiju fans have wondered what is next for the beast. And a cryptic tweet suggests Godzilla will be up to something very soon.

This morning @TOHO_GODZILLA, the official Toho Godzilla account, posted a cryptic tweet that has sent the rumor mill into overdrive, racking up hundreds of likes and retweets within a few hours. The tweet features a single clock emoji. Attached to the tweet is a picture of a 24-hour clock mounted on a brick wall. The clock’s hands read 9am. Interestingly, there seem to be markings on the wall next to the clock, but at the current time, it isn’t known if these markings are intentional hints or merely a random coincidence.

This tweet sent fans into overdrive, with loads of kaiju fans trying to work out what the tweet means. Many fans wonder if this will lead to the announcement of a new Godzilla project, be it a film, anime, or comic book. While others are trying to work out if this tweet means we’ll hear more at 9am tomorrow or if we’ll need to wait for nine days to learn the meaning of this strange tweet.

Due to the photo being real-world, many fans hope this teaser will lead to the announcement of a new live-action Godzilla film as the last Japanese produced live-action Godzilla film was 2016’s Shin Godzilla. -> 😁

However, other fans are keen to point out that this mysterious tweet might be a joke. The @TOHO_GODZILLA account often posts strange or surreal things, playing off popular fan memes. So it wouldn’t be outside of the realms of possibility for this to be a cruel joke.

We won’t know what this tweet is about until Toho decides to reveal the meaning behind it. However, one thing is for sure, Godzilla isn’t relinquishing his kaiju crown anytime soon, and the character will continue to dominate cinema and pop culture for decades to come.

I must admit the more humanoid characters: Ultraman, Jet Jaguar et al really don't do anything for me. Daimajin was fine (granted I've only seen the first film) because he was used sparingly. Only "fighting" regular sized humans. Akin to Talos in Jason and the Argonauts.

Original ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Godzilla Raids Again’ Novelizations Getting English Language Translations for First Time

Originally published almost 70 years ago, the original Japanese novelization of both Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again will be available in the English language this October!

University of Minnesota Press will be releasing the English-language versions of both novels that were originally penned by Shigeru Kayama, newly translated by Jeffrey Angles.

This is the first time these two classic Godzilla novels have EVER been available in English. Both books will be unleashed here in the United States on October 3, 2023.

“At long last, the pathbreaking novellas by Shigeru Kayama that launched the Godzilla franchise are finally available in English. It was well worth the wait: Jeffrey Angles’s lively translation captures all the action, emotion, and political edge of the original Japanese texts. This engaging volume will be a revelation for Godzilla fans, a rich resource for students of Japan, and a rewarding read for anyone who enjoys classic tales of science fiction and adventure,” William M. Tsutsui, chancellor of Ottawa University and author of Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters, said in a statement included in the official press release.

The press release continues…

Godzilla emerged from the sea to devastate Tokyo in the now-classic 1954 film, produced by Tōhō Studios and directed by Ishirō Honda, creating a global sensation and launching one of the world’s most successful movie and media franchises. Awakened and transformed by nuclear weapons testing, Godzilla serves as a terrifying metaphor for humanity’s shortsighted destructiveness: this was the intent of Shigeru Kayama, the science fiction writer who drafted the 1954 original film and its first sequel and, in 1955, published these novellas.

Although the Godzilla films have been analyzed in detail by cultural historians, film scholars, and generations of fans, Kayama’s two Godzilla novellas—both classics of Japanese young-adult science fiction—have never been available in English. This book finally provides English-speaking fans and critics the original texts with these first-ever English-language translations of Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again. The novellas reveal valuable insights into Kayama’s vision for the Godzilla story, feature plots that differ from those of the films, and clearly display the author’s strong antinuclear, proenvironmental convictions.

Kayama’s fiction depicts Godzilla as engaging in guerrilla-style warfare against humanity, which has allowed the destruction of the natural world through its irresponsible, immoral perversion of science. As human activity continues to cause mass extinctions and rapid climatic change, Godzilla provides a fable for the Anthropocene, powerfully reminding us that nature will fight back against humanity’s onslaught in unpredictable and devastating ways.
