Dragon Quest XI

DANGERMAN

I'm 65 hours in now, I keep flip-flopping on this.

The last 3 days last week and yesterday I really couldn't be arsed to play it at all but then I got to the second Casino and it was just a pure delight, I loved every second of that particular cities' arc. and I liked it again.

Then I got my whole party wiped by a boss (Alizarin) near Sniflheim for the very first time and I was like ? The story arc at Sniflheim (2nd visit) is looking intriguing as hell too.

I do find it's a really easy game to just pick up your phone whilst playing it though. When I reach a new area I often just put it on auto run and keep clicking L2 whilst messing about on my phone. Also whilst driving the ship around you can just do the same thing really.

Not sure how much longer I've got but I'm almost definitely not going to bother with Act 3 for now, my time with the game will finish at Act 2 for the time being I think.

I'm glad this game picks up because 3 hours in and I'm not sure what to think. I mean, I did play for 3 hours so there's something to it that kept me hooked, but it's more basic than I thought it was going to be. I think I'd just forgotten how traditional jrpg's played out. I'll probably keep going and get the 10hrs out of the demo as the save carries over and see how I feel.

I'm finding this demo extremely pleasant. The first little mountain climb mission put me off a bit, with it's uninteresting enemies and sparse environs.

But hitting the open(ish) world on my horse, camping, speeding up the battles to almost action RPG status, and then walking into that amazing city floored me.

I was wondering what I was going to be doing in my gaming life in the coming year. Now I know.

I wouldn't play a jrpg on anything but the switch.

I love the genre. I'm closing in on a hundred wonderful hours on octopath traveller. But I just don't get enough sit down console time to get anywhere near the hours required to face down a game of this time commitment on anything but a handheld.

Luckily, the switch is becoming the home of these games. DQ11 looks great, too. A massive visual upgrade from the likes of XC2 or Ys8.

The guy from Kotaku reckons the Japanese regard dragon quest games as digital bedtime stories, and the best time to play is in bed, or just before you turn in.

That sounds about right to me. Since I'm used to nodding off and getting smacked in the nose by my kindle, it'll be good to know what the Switch feels like.

8 hours into the demo and I'm helping 2 extremely posh sisters get their powers back. Done lots of crafting and exploring, and helped just about everyone who's needed it.

Started to wonder how I'm going to cope when the demo runs out and I have wait near 3 weeks for the game.

It's a sad time for everyone ?
