Divinity: Original Sin 2

I'm just about to step off the boat on to the 2nd island. Annoyingly Sir Lora is now a spirit. I'm assuming he got caught up in all the fireballs during the preceeding fight. He still seems to be functioning as normal but it doesn't feel like there's much I could have done about it.

I didn't really bother respeccing anyone. In the midst of giving everyone better armour Red Prince lost a skill, I can't place which one though, aside from that I'm happy with everyone. I could do with Fane learning something to replenish his armour or possibly teleport him out of the way. His armour is already too low to give him the gloves too

I think there might be a case for playing this with some sort of guide. Not so you've got every solution, more so you stay on the right path. In the 2nd area you've got a large area to explore and there's not a lot stopping you from going to places you shouldn't. It's not like Fallout where the enemies keep you out of areas you shouldn't be in, fights are so rare here that it's entirely possible you've been walking and talking for an hour and have to turn around and go back

I managed to cheese a fight I shouldn't have been in by using a 3rd party. 3rd party was lobbing fireballs around so I teleported the enemies in to the line of fire and didn't finish my turn until she'd killed them for me

There's definitely areas which say something along the lines of "your party is too weak to continue this way" but no physical barrier to stop you proceeding.

There is a district lack of signposting at times though - but suppose that's a good thing in an open world RPG isn't it?

Yeah, means you stumble on stuff organically rather than having the same experience as everyone else.

I've not had a warning not to go further yet, only after a fight has started. I don't think watching Rock Paper Shotgun play through it is helping. They've had a lot of advice from their community, so a couple of their characters are really powerful in battle. I think they've also been smarter/luckier with their armour, they've somehow got their summoning high enough already that the incarnate is a 9ft demon rather than the imp I manage to summon

Yep, there's certainly a few min/max type builds out there.

With regards to where you are, 2nd area, from what I can remember (general hints rather than actual spoilers)

Spoiler

There's a route to the west which will link back to the first area, lots of tricky, but doable, things to the south east, including a dragon and a witch in a cave, and to the north a final harbour area (but beware of the shriekers). There's also a beach/cliff area to the north west and a ruined fort type section, and burning pigs around the centre - but also a few tricky encounters you can stumble across.

Oh, and there's whole village full of friendly folk (and quests) once you climb up the vines to the south.

I've skirted around the south edge of the mysterious island. I don't know if I'm ready for that yet. There's a couple of small quests on the west that I need to tidy up, and there was a fight in a cave I ran away from I've since found out you're supposed to lose. After that I'm going to head back east to the paladins or whoever they were and the cemetery, ideally to help that kids mum

I fucked up pepper

I'm not going to respec, for the most part I'm happy with everyone. Fane is my ranged and so can't replenish shield, but I've started to get skills with other people that can help him with that. Generally I just stand him in poison at the start of the fight and hope no one sets it on fire.

Ifran (my main) is still rocking the tyrant set. He's not felt underpowered in battle but I've got better gear (not a full set yet annoyingly), so I'll be replacing that soon

Bump.

So I started this way back in December 2017 (according to the time stamps on the three achievements I unlocked), but for some reason only played the opening few hours.

Fast forward to March 2023, I’ve redownloaded it and started over.

Went with the classical difficulty, chose a human wizard as my starting character. I remapped some of the keys, changed camera rotation to E and R, changed the button that highlights items you can interact with to Left Shift. That feels more natural to me.

Feels good and long overdue to be playing a game like this again. I love that you can barter with all the characters.

I’m about 5/6 hours in. Have four party members at the moment, all level 3. My main character, a wizard/pyromancer, an undead called Fane who specialises in backstabbing, a ranger called Ifan wielding crossbows and a lizard called The Red Prince who fights with a sword and shield. I’m not sure yet if I will stick with this arrangement or if I’ll experiment with other companions.

I have multiple active quests as is typical for a Divinity game. Let’s see if this game can crack the 100 hours mark…

Starting to feel this sink its hooks into me now. My characters (same team) are at level 4, almost level 5, and have much better gear. I like how characters are not tied down to classes and you can mold them into whatever you want them to be.

Around 30 hours in now, my team just hit level 8. Close to wrapping up everything on the first island. At least, the stuff that I’ve found. The game is so full of secrets that I’ve likely missed stuff. I’ve given most of my characters an additional magic specialization in addition to their main combat class.

The younger brother has passed the older brother.

I’ve arrived at the village of Driftwood and am firmly on to the second act of the game now.

One thing I will say is that the game does crash regularly. It crashed twice today, one requiring a hard reset. It’s crashed at least 5-10 times total.

At 40'ish hours I'm guessing you didn't finish the first game?

Going to Driftwood did you have big fight on the ship or is that the one you get to through the caves ? I recall both those areas being pretty tough.

Nope. I doubt I was even close to the end. It would be interesting to load that save file up now though!

I had the big fight on the ship, yeah, Lady Vengeance. Not sure about caves. I’ve already been through a lot of caves…

The 'problem' I had with the D:OS is that whilst they were quite engaging, they never felt that much fun to actually play - it always seemed that you were constantly on the edge of not quite being powerful enough for the encounters and one mistimed move could lead to defeat, which felt at times a bit of a grind (not as in 'grinding' but often having to reload, adjust tactics, and retry until something either worked, or you'd perhaps just strayed into something beyond your current level).

So I've played Baldur's Gate 1&2 multiple times, same with Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls games etc, but with these, and despite offering different party options, I only played once each.

I haven’t had any massive difficulty so far, I can’t even remember the last time I lost or reset a fight. I feel like it happened a bit more early on in the game though.

I actually think the well balanced difficulty is one of the strengths of the game. Battles are never boring.

As much as I enjoyed the first game and am enjoying the second game though, I do feel they are over-rated. Certainly not 10/10 classics like Baldur’s Gate 1 or 2 (like you, games I’ve also played multiple times) or The Witcher 3. I’m not sure if they elevate themselves above Pillars either.

My opinion might change though.
