Dying Light 2 written in part by The Witcher 3 ‘Bloody Baron’ Quest writers

Techland is taking the story, writing and quests for upcoming zombie parkour game Dying Light 2 very seriously.

Not only has it hired the talent of designer Chris Avellone to shape the game, but it has also hired writers from CD Projekt RED who worked on The Witcher 3’s Bloody Baron quest.

The Bloody Baron quest lines in The Witcher 3 are held up as examples of some of the best writing in the game, with a series of events and decisions that force the player and the characters involved through emotional and compromising situations.

“This is very ambitious, so we knew we needed some help,” Techland told VG247 at E3 this week. “So we asked Chris Avellone, the master of non-linear story telling to help us with this challenge.

“We also got some additional help in the form of the former The Witcher 3 writing team. Those guys were responsible for some of the best quests from that game including the Bloody Baron quest line. All of those guys are working very hard to create a narrative – it’s like a puzzle to play with.”

Dying Light 2’s world will be shaped by the choices the player makes. Making political decisions to help or hinder particular factions will determine how citizens in the city react and are treated, as well as your access to different resources.

“As you play the game you will make many difficult dilemmas and you will make difficult choices by gameplay, by dialogue, by exploration. The choices you make will transform the world around you,” said Techland.

Not true. If you read it Blakey..

Bloody Baron is a good questline. But Chris Avellone has wrote many..

As i said in the Microsoft thread, if you have Chris Avellone on your game it instantly makes it better.

Having an interesting game like the first one because of it's mechanics and adding probably the best writer in games makes this one of my most looked forward to games in the future.

Dying Light 2 is a game where you spend most of your time legging it across rooftops smacking zombies upside the head. Because of that, a sense of speed is more important than more polygons, and developer Techland understands this.

In a recent interview with WCCFtech, the developer spoke about its technical aims with the zombie-slaying sequel.

“The most important [thing] for us [is] the fluidity of movement, because it’s a parkour game,” Dying Light 2 lead designer Tymon Smektala explained.

“You really have to be immersed in how you move through the city, so 60fps is more important to us than 4K.”

That doesn’t mean 4K might not happen, however. Smektala goes on to say that the team has some “real wizards” on the tech side and optimisation, “so perhaps we’ll deliver both 4K and 60fps”.

Additionally, the developer is hoping to support the extra power afforded by both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but plans are still being finalised as the game takes shape.

Techland’s optimisation efforts are being helped along by a recent engine switch. Dying Light was made using the company’s Chrome Engine, but the developer made a new engine, the C-Engine, for Dying Light 2. It’s next-gen-ready.

“We realised at the brink of 4K gaming we needed new technology to provide gamers with high fidelity visuals, so we created a new engine, and it’s ready for whatever happens in gaming,” Smektala said.

60fps should have been a standard this gen, aside from a few exceptions. I'm glad Techland are on board with this.
