Watched the second What if episode yesterday. It's true, it was an interesting spin on the Guardians formular and I quite enjoyed it particularly the different take on some of the antagonists.

Spoiler

Goldylocks Nebula was an instant favourite.

Also interesting that T'Challah was voiced by Chadwick Boseman. I actually have no knowledge about the production pipeline of an animated show but it seems the voice-overs are done rather early on if he was still able to contribute.

I think I'll watch the remaining episodes as well. If nothing else I think there's at least some visual spectacle to look forward to in every episode, because they're really very lavishly produced.

Batman v Superman should have been the greatest superhero movie of all time ☹️

There is still hope for one particular Versus film, Maf. One that the name alone, will definitely put bums in seats...

There is no way in hell this isn't in the pipeline in the MCU boardroom.

What If..? Episode 7

Well, I think the worst episode has just landed. This would be the "light hearted" one. Strange they chose Thor for that type of story. However, not one for me. It speaks volumes that the only bit of interest was the final twist, right in the last few seconds. Even that, looked cool, but without context made little sense. 4/10

What If..? Episode 8

Ohhh Now we have developments! While initially we have a truncated Avengers 2. The plot then shifts dramatically. Adding context to Episode 7's ending at least. While kind of breaking from the What If mold, this is much improved 9/10

Venom 2 spoilers

Spoiler

https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/venom-2-carnage-post-credits-scene-reactions-spider-man-no-way-home/#3

The post credit scene puts Venom in the MCU. Not sure how specifically. I’ve read a few spoilers but it’s hard to understand what exactly happens. It seems like the Symbiote tells Eddie it has seen other universes then magically blips Eddie to the MCU where JK Simmon’s JJJ is talking about Peter Parker’s identity being out.

What happens after I’m not sure. But since SM3 is multiverse based it seems like the stage is set for Venom to join the MCU properly, or kick Spidey out of it.

I reserve judgement until I see it for myself, but it sounds lazy as fuck.

Kind of feel like Spider-Man 3 has become dominated by who is and isn’t it and what the universe implications are than what the actual movie is about.

I have mixed feelings about the whole situation with this move.

Spoiler

No because they don’t usually worry about excuses to do that. I think this is just a really strange product of licensing fallout. For some reason they seem very concerned in how to legitimise it or explain it narratively, when blatantly it’s two companies trying to amicably part ways.

Spider-Man and his MCU story feels like it’s being made secondary or even tertiary to all this other shit. But then I guess it felt like this before. Spider-Man joining the MCU was supposed to be great because he would be home. But the first movie too an extent, and the second movie too much so, are smothered in MCU. And the 3rd film is Spider-Man being overwhelmed by all his old or spin-off franchises. Spider-Man never got to just be Spider-Man as a part of the MCU and was squeezed and commercialised until all the Spider-Man fell out of it.

No Way Home might be the most appropriate meta title there is. There’s just no way for Spider-Man to get home when caught between these companies.

The way Spider-Man has been.. moulded into the MCU, did give me concerns for the X-Men. But, in contrast to Spidey, there are too many Mutants to force into any Avengers shadow. That said, I really hope they adapt more of the 616 X-Men (and FF) into the MCU, than the Ultimate version that the Avengers were largely based on. The ultimate version of each team got a little.. rough.

Black Widow hit D+ today/yesterday/tomorrow/soonish delete as appropriate. Waited this long I think I’ll wait the extra month until Hawkeye comes out before watching it, though. Turns out not only was it not worth the £35 premium tag, to me it isn’t even worth enough to re-up the £5 sub.

What If..? Episode 9

🤔

So this episode is part two of the previous one. The problem is it seems like an episode is now missing? A character is introduced in this episode in a way that indicates they were an earlier reference. That you should be familiar with their variation. Except nope. So their inclusion doesn't really make sense. This entire runtime is taken up with a battle for the most part. The resolution is fine, I guess. Just a lot more superficial (and seemingly final?) than the prior eight. 7/10

The main issue being Black Widow's film was a couple phases too late. Swap out with Thor: Darkworld and that would have been about the right time for her film.

That, too, but as a movie it's also not particularly good. It has the same issues most recent Marvel movies have in that it's not consistent in its tone. The prologue is some high adrenaline agent & spy stuff but then it turns into a goofy goose chase with unfunny one-liners. Not to mention that the whole pheromone thing towards the end was laughably stupid.

I keep forgetting about what if for some reason, gotta go back to that as long as I still have access to the service.

Episode 9 is the last episode of the season. Now the next weekly show is Hawkeye, in November I think.

I gave up following the MCU films a while ago, but as a standalone action film I thought Black Widow was reasonably entertaining, and I didn't feel that I missed out on too much (not being well versed in MCU) - which I guess might be more an issue if you're expecting more development in that area.

I was rather surprised they didn't develop the BW movie much earlier in the MCU cycle though.
