Pretty mad, I think a lot of their success is probably the Series S which has been pretty much widely available everywhere (especially in Europe) for quite some time now.  I think a lot of those Series S buyers may upgrade to an X down the line when supply allows which means you'll get folks double dipping.

All credit to them. I have been sceptical about Phil for sometime as despite promises year on year those killer 1P exclusive titles just haven't come about. Now they've got those, plus they launch day 1 on Game Pass for no additional cost, then you've got big 3P games launching on the service as well as Indies releasing with regularity.

Series X is a helluva console, way better than the Xbox One ever was in my view.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 2 2022)

Quote

Minecraft on Switch was the best selling boxed title in the UK for the week ending January 15 -- sales for the SKU increased 112% week-on-week.

It was followed by FIFA 22, which remained steady at No.2 for the third week in a row.

Super Mario Party charted at No.3, growing 386% week-on-week following various retailer sales.

Last week's No.1, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, settled for No.4 with a 38% drop in sales.

Two titles re-entered the charts in good positions this week: Minecraft Dungeons took No.7 with a 387% growth, and WarioWare: Get it Together landed at No.12 with a 465% increase in sales week-on-week. Both were boosted by retailer promotions.

Boxed unit sales across all titles were down 26% week-on-week as the industry is slowly getting ready to a number of big releases in the coming weeks including Pokémon Legends Arceus, Rainbow Six Extraction, and Elden Ring.

36 million games and 3.4 million consoles sold in the UK in 2021 | UK Annual Report

Quote

Nintendo Switch overtakes PS5 on the final lap, FIFA sales grow, but Call of Duty falls

35.8 million digital and physical games, 3.36 million consoles and 10.6 million accessories were sold in the UK during 2021.

This is according to software data from GSD, and hardware/accessories data from GfK.

SWITCH JUST BEATS PS5 TO NO.1

There was growth in the console space, driven by the first full year of the new PlayStation and Xbox machines. Combined Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox sales were up 14% compared to the year before, GfK data shows (note, the 2020 data covers 53 weeks, while the 2021 figures cover 52 weeks).

The No.1 console in the UK was Nintendo Switch, which overtook PlayStation 5 in the final weeks of the year. Half a million Switch consoles were sold over November and December alone, helped by a Mario Kart 8: Deluxe bundle that launched during Black Friday, and the new OLED version, which launched in October.

It was the Nintendo Switch's second-biggest year by quite a large margin, but was down over 2020. During that year, the console surged in popularity due to the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Xbox Series consoles were the third biggest platform group. The Series X variety accounted for 43% of all the Xbox Series consoles sold over the year, a figure that varied wildly over the weeks of 2021. For example, during the third quarter of the year (July - September) Series X was just 24% of the total sales, while in the final quarter (October - December), the X variety outsold the S (GfK figures).

Of course, demand significantly outstripped supply of both PS5 and Xbox Series X during last year.

FIFA 22 SALES UP OVER 21

Although consoles grew, software declined. According to GSD, 35.8 million games were sold in 2021 (note: not all games publishers share digital sales, see full list below), which is down 16% over 2020.

It's worth noting that there was an extra week in the 2020 figures. Furthermore, 2020 was an unusual year due to a surge in sales caused by the first COVID-19 lockdown. If we compare the 2021 figures to 2019, the games software market is actually up 38%.

20.5 million games were downloaded last year (down 18% over 2020, up 43% on 2019), while 15.3 million games were bought physically (down 12.6% over 2020, and down 7% over 2019).

Focused purely on new releases (so games only released in 2021), 11.3 million games were sold last year. That represents 31.6% of all games sold. By comparison, 14.3 million new games were sold in 2020, which was 33.5% of all games sold that year.

To work out the digital/physical split, we must discount all publishers who do not share digital sales (so companies like Nintendo and Bethesda). Overall, participating companies saw 30.3 million games sold, of which 9.8 million were bought physically. That means the UK games market is around 32.4% physical. This is a slight improvement on 2020, when retail accounted for just under 32% of the market.

EA was the biggest publisher in terms of digital, while Nintendo was top in physical sales.

FIFA 22 was the best-selling game of the year, and it finished the year 10.3% up over FIFA 21. However, it was a tough year for Activision's Call of Duty. Call of Duty: Vanguard came in at No.2, but sales are down 36.1% compared to the previous year's game (Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War).

Grand Theft Auto 5 was incredibly the No.3 game of the year, eight years since it first launched. The game's sales are 23% down over its performance in 2020, but the fact we're even comparing sales year-on-year for a single game speaks to the title's enduring popularity. One of the reasons for GTA 5's success is in the digital space, with Rockstar running promotional activity around the game's online multiplayer mode: GTA Online.

Rockstar's other hit game, Red Dead Redemption 2, also remains a key seller. It was No.6 in the 2021 charts, with sales down just 5% compared with its performance in 2020.

Another game we can make year-on-year comparisons with is Mario Kart 8: Deluxe. The game is a regular seller alongside Nintendo Switch hardware, and so its not a surprise to see sales drop 20% year-on-year, reflecting the drop in Nintendo Switch console sales.

Outside of FIFA and Call of Duty, the best-selling new release of the year was F1 2021, which narrowly beat Far Cry 6. It was a dramatic year for the F1 racing season, which will have boosted interest in the title. Indeed, the game saw a big surge in sales over December when the season was reaching its controversial conclusion. Codemasters/EA also included the game in numerous end-of-year sales on digital stores.

The only other thing to note is with the new Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Both games are counted separately, but if sales were combined, they would have charted in 10th position as the best-selling Switch game (note: digital sales are missing for Pokémon as Nintendo does not share digital figures). In the physical-only charts, it would have been No.3 if sales were combined.

SONY COMES TOP IN ACCESSORIES

Finally, accessories sales are down 6% compared with 2020, GfK says. But it was still a huge year with 10.6 million accessories sold, helped by the popularity of PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

The best-selling accessory was the DualSense White controller for PS5, followed by the Black controller for Xbox.

In the headset space, Turtle Beach's Ear Force Recon series continues to sell well, but it was Sony's Pulse 3D Wireless headset that was top in this area, and the third best-selling accessory of the year overall.

The highest charting Nintendo Switch accessory is the Switch Pro Controller (Black) at No.14.

UK Chart Roundup & UK Chart Top-10 week ending January 29th 2022 (Week 4)

Quote

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the first major game launch of the year, and it's delivered huge numbers in its first week in the UK.

The game is billed as a new 'main series' Pokémon title, and it was developed by the franchise creators Game Freak. However, it is a new take on the series and launches during a typically quiet month for games sales. In addition, it arrives just two months after the last significant Pokémon releases -- Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl -- which enjoyed a very big launch when they arrived back in November.

As a result, it was difficult to predict just how this game would do. But boosted by impressive critical scores this past week, the game has gone on to deliver big numbers and has sold out at numerous retailers. It is the fourth biggest Pokémon UK game launch of all time, selling more than last year's Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl.

It is the best-selling Pokémon game where there's just a single version of the game, comfortably beating the previous best -- Pokémon Yellow, which was released back in the year 2000.

Note: Digital sales are not included.

The new Pokémon game accounted for almost 50% of all boxed games sold last week, however, there were other new releases in the charts. The next biggest selling new game is Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PS5, which features enhanced versions of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which were first released on PS4. The package debuts at No.5 in the weekly charts.

Last week's new shooter release, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Extraction, falls from No.4 to No.17 after a 55% drop in sales week-on-week. This is just for physical sales. According to the digital charts (published by GSD), 65% of Rainbow Six's launch sales were via download stores.

Elsewhere, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild continues its rise back up the charts. The Switch game is now at No.6 after a 21% sales increase week-on-week. The game is approaching its fifth year on the market, and a sequel is currently planned for this year.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 5 2022)

Quote

Pokémon Legends: Arceus holds the No.1 position in the UK boxed charts, despite a 72% drop in sales week-on-week.

It's a relatively steep drop for a Pokémon game, by comparison last year's Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl dropped by 61% in their second week (combined). However, the second week for those games was the Black Friday sales window, which is the biggest sales week of the year.

The game that almost beat Pokémon was Dying Light 2 from Techland. It's a strong launch for a game that will almost certainly be a big seller via digital download platforms (it has already dominated the weekly Steam charts). Note: This GfK data only tracks physical retail sales.

The last Dying Light reached No.1 back in 2015 but was released after its initial digital launch. Also the market has changed radically since 2015, which makes any comparisons irrelevant. To compare to recent launches, the game had a much stronger debut than Guardians of the Galaxy, and was just narrowly behind Battlefield 2042.

54% of Dying Light 2's UK physical sales were on PS5, 27% on Xbox and 19% on PS4.

Returning to the charts this week is Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, which jumped 263% in sales thanks to retail promotions. The Sega game reached No.15, just as the Winter Olympics are getting underway.

Last week's other new release, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PS5, drops 70% in sales and falls from No.5 to No.21.

Why can’t we have more games developed exclusively for next gen again?
19% is still a good amount but when that much of a majority are on next gen, surely we can move on? Please?

UK Chart Roundup (Week 6 2022)

Quote

Pokémon Legends: Arceus once again took the top spot of the UK boxed charts, for the third consecutive week, despite a 45% drop in sales.

Dying Light 2 had to settle for No.2 again for its second week in the charts. Sales for Techland's title only decreased 57% week-on-week, selling particularly well on PS5 (42% of all units shifted) and PS4 (29%).

The rest of the Top Ten was very similar to the previous week, with FIFA 22, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons all keeping their spots from No.3 to No.5.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition re-entered the charts at No.6 following its physical launch on Switch on February 11. Nintendo's platform accounted for 91% of all GTA Trilogy units sold last week, with the title's sales overall increasing 771% compared to the week before.

There was no new entry in the charts this week, but a few titles reappeared further down the list due to retail promotions on Switch, including Lego The Incredibles at No.28 and Lego DC Super-Villains at No.34.

I know the ratio of physical sales to digital sales will be very different for Switch compared to other platforms but still a single platform game holding off everything else for 3 weeks in a row seems really good. I would expect Pokemon to kill on the first week, then maybe on the second, but three weeks is crazy.

Although I expect Horizon FW to knock it in to 2nd place this week

NPD (US) January 2022 Sales Data

Quote

State of the Market

January 2022 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories declined 2% when compared to a year ago, to $4.7B. A double-digit percentage gain in hardware spending could not offset declines in content and accessories spending.

Despite hardware sales gains in January, supply constraints continue to impact video game hardware across all current generation platforms. Total market spending has now shown year-on-year declines for 3 consecutive months.

Hardware

Video game hardware dollar sales increased 22% when compared to January 2021, reaching $390 million. This is the highest total for a January month since the $447 million total reached in January 2009.

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform of January 2022 in both units and dollars. Xbox Series ranked 2nd across both measures.

Software

Pokémon Legends: Arceus was January's best-selling game. It joined Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl (#11) on the best-selling titles chart for the month.

Monster Hunter: Rise (#3 in January, up from #94 in December) and God of War (#5 in January, #146 a month ago) both featured Steam launches during January 2022, which drove their respective gains.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales ranked as the 6th best-selling game of January. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales now trails only Marvel's Spider-Man and God of War (2018) in lifetime dollar sales for Sony published titles since 1995.

Accessories

January 2022 spending on video game accessories declined 15% when compared to a year ago, to $185 million.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was the best-selling accessory of January 2022.

Yeah it is impressive, it's also down to nothing much else really coming out but I'm surprised it held off DL2 in its first week.

But yeah, if Horizon FW doesn't knock it off top spot next week something has gone very wrong somewhere for that game.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 7 2022)

Quote

Horizon: Forbidden West was comfortably the No.1 game in the UK boxed charts, according to the latest GfK figures.

The game is the second biggest PS5 launch so far, behind popular launch game Spider-Man: Miles Morales and just ahead of FIFA 22. Like Spider-Man, the new Horizon was released on both PS4 and PS5. 68% of the boxed sales were on PS5 with the remainder on the older PlayStation.

Forbidden West's launch sales are down 35% compared with its predecessor: 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn.

However, this data does not factor in digital sales, and the download market has accelerated significantly in the last five years. Digital download data will be released later in the week.

Considering the lack of availability of PS5 consoles, we might expect Horizon to rise up and down the charts as more machines become available.

It means that Pokemon Legends: Arceus falls to No.2 (sales down 52% week-on-week). The Nintendo Switch game was No.1 for three consecutive weeks and is still the fastest-selling game of the year.

The release of Horizon coincided with more PS5 consoles coming to stores, which has resulted in other PS5 games rising up the charts. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is up 15 places to No.12 after a 90% sales rise week-on-week. Meanwhile, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart re-enters the charts at No.20.

Just behind Ratchet & Clank is Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection, which jumps back into the charts at No.21 following the release of the Nintendo Switch version of the pack.

Elsewhere, a new update to Cyberpunk 2077 means that the game is now enhanced for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. As a result, the CD Projekt title rose 271% in sales week-on-week and re-enters the charts at No.23.

The one other new game in the charts is King of Fighters XV at No.30. The SNK title sold best on PS5, accounting for 53% of sales, with 25% on PS4 and 23% on Xbox.
