67% digital.... that’s worrying for people like me who see the console online stores as a rip off. Wonder if a lot of that is smaller, indie, online only games and PC and isn’t indicative of the majority of the console marketplace.

Cant believe how well the Switch has sold this year, apart from AC has anything of note come out on it?

UK Chart Roundup (Week 2 2021)

Quote

Animal Crossing: New Horizons secures its third consecutive No.1 in the UK boxed charts.

The Nintendo Switch exclusive secures its place at the summit despite a 24% drop in sale week-on-week. It's yet another week where Switch dominated the boxed games business in the UK, with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.2 (sales down 23%), Super Mario 3D World at No.8 (sales down 3%), New Super Mario Bros U at No.9 (sales down 15%), and Ring Fit Adventure at No.10 (down 37%). There are 10 Switch games in the Top 20 best-selling games.

Ubisoft's Just Dance 2021 holds No.3 despite a 29% sales drop. This week 87% of the game's sales were on Nintendo Switch.

Switch is proving to be the savior for UK boxed retailers. For the first two weeks of 2021, game sales are up 27.4% compared with the same period last year, and this is almost entirely down to games for Nintendo Switch (overall, Switch game sales are up 120% year-to-date). PlayStation game sales are also up slightly if we combine PS4 and PS5 game sales together.

The only game in the Top Ten to increase in sales week-on-week was the forever popular Grand Theft Auto 5, which rises four places to No.4 due to a 6% sales increase.

There is just one new game in the charts this week, and it is the first new game to crack the Top 40 of 2021. Five Nights At Freddy's: Core Collection makes No.32, published by Maximum Games. 55% of its sales came on Nintendo Switch, 24% on PS4 and 21% on Xbox One.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 3 2021)

Quote

Hitman 3 has taken No.1 in the UK boxed charts, with launch sales up 17% over its predecessor.

Developed and owned by IO Interactive, Hitman 3's boxed release was handled by Square Enix, the company that previously owned the franchise before letting it go. The last game, 2018's Hitman 2, was published by Warner Bros.

The PS5 version of the game was by far the dominant edition, accounting for 49% of sales. The Xbox version accounted for 27%, while the PS4 version made up 25%. Of course, this is just physical games, the majority of Hitman 3's sales will have taken place in the digital download space.

Hitman's chart-topping debut means that Animal Crossing: New Horizons drops to No.2, although only 800 games separates the two titles. Animal Crossing's sales dropped 8% week-on-week.

Some new PS5 consoles were released in the market last week, which had a positive impact on a few titles. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is up 161%, jumping from No.12 to No.5, Demon's Souls re-enters the charts at No.27 with a 291% sales increase, and there were sales bumps for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (up 56% and driven by the PlayStation version) and Assassin's Creed Valhalla (up 7%, but with the PS5 version up 174%). In total, PS5 game sales increased 324% week-on-week.

Another big riser was Ring Fit Adventure. The Nintendo Switch fitness game has frequently jumped up the charts during the pandemic whenever new stock comes into the market. The game rises to No.7 with a 47% sales rise.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 4 2021)

Quote

Animal Crossing: New Horizons returns to the top of the UK boxed charts after temporarily losing its place to Hitman 3 last week.

IO Interactive's stealth game falls to No.11, which may seem like a steep fall, but sales are actually down 68% week-on-week and that is a relatively normal decline for a core game in its second week on sale.

Animal Crossing takes No.1 despite sales dropping 12% week-on-week, while Mario Kart 8: Deluxe rises a place to No.2 having also slipped 12% over the week before.

It wasn't all drops, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War rises two place to No.3 after a 2% sales increase, while Grand Theft Auto 5 is up to No.4 after a 7% sales increase.

Otherwise, it's a pretty quiet week for games retail. There are two new entries in the chart, PGA Tour 2K21 at No.31 (sales up 52%) and Fortnite: The Last Laugh bundle, which returns to No.36 after a 50% spike in sales.

Next week is also looking pretty quiet, while the following week marks the launch of the first significant game of the year: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury on Nintendo Switch.

The Quest 2 is an amazing piece of technology. For me it has the same feeling as playing on a PS1 again for the first time, and the fact that it is self-contained as well as able to teether to your PC, just means it is the best of both worlds. The mandatory facebook integration is problematic though.

Quest chads ?

I think Quest 2 is as close as you get to a Wii with VR as far as market success goes (not that these are wii numbers), PCVR just isn't the future of this tech even if the Index is probably better in every category (except you cant crawl on the floor hiding from combine on an Index without getting tangled, Quest-exclusive technology)

UK Chart Roundup (Week 5 2021)

Quote

Another week, another triumph for Nintendo in the UK boxed charts.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is No.1 once again, for the fourth time this year, despite a 13% drop in sales. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe stays at No.2 for the second consecutive week, with a 1% slip in sales.

It was very nearly a Nintendo top three, but Ring Fit Adventure missed out on third spot by just 52 units. The fitness game's sales rose 34% week-on-week, but couldn't quite topple Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which held on despite an 8% sales drop.

The only significant new boxed game to come out this year (so far) is Hitman 3, and that game is now down at No.17 with a 54% slide in sales week-on-week.

There was one new game in the charts, and that's Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthbound at No.36. The game was published by Maximum Games in the UK.

It's a fairly quiet start to the year for the games market, but there is a significant new game arriving this coming week in the form of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for Nintendo Switch. That game will certainly be the best-selling boxed game this time next week.

[GI.biz] Ampere: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales in line with, not ahead of, previous gen (Xbox at 2.8m, PS5 at 4.2m sold-through)

Quote

Data from Ampere Analysis suggests that Xbox Series X|S has sold 2.8 million units since launching in November -- lagging a little behind the Xbox One during the same post-launch timeframe at 2.9 million units.

Meanwhile, PS5 has matched the performance of PS4, which shifted 4.2 million units in its first few months after launching in November 2013.

Last week, Sony's financials reported PS5 has sold 4.5 million units -- confirming it as the most successful PlayStation, and by extension the most successful home console, of all time.

However, Sony's figures usually represent sales to retail or shipments, while Ampere claims its data focuses on sell-through -- sales directly to consumers.

Ampere believes PS5 would likely have sold more than five million units thus far had availability been less of an issue.

The analysis firm also expects PS5 could sell between 7.6 million and 8 million consoles by the end of March 2021, which would put it ahead of PS4's 7.5 million sales in the same time frame.

Microsoft's performance is deemed to be more disappointing. Despite having the cheapest next-gen console in the Xbox Series S, and launching in more than three times as many markets as the Xbox One in November 2013, the company still fell 100,000 units short of its previous performance.

Ampere adds that, while Microsoft is focusing on recurring revenue through Game Pass and general audience engagement across consoles, PC and even mobile, rather than primarily relying on traditional hardware sales, it believes Series X|S owners will remain A cornerstone of the Xbox business until at least 2025.
