UK Chart Week 39 Breakdown

Quote

There are two new games in the Top Ten physical retail charts this week, and both in 2K Games' Mafia series.

Mafia: Definitive Edition debuts at No.3 and it's a remake of the 2002 original. This new version has been developed by Hangar 13, the team behind 2016's Mafia 3. Meanwhile the Mafia Trilogy (which includes the Definitive Edition, a remaster of the second game and Mafia III) comes in at No.6. Neither product has sold particularly strong in physical form, although it's worth noting that digital data is not included in this chart.

One game that has sold well in physical form is Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which secures its second week at No.1 in the UK physical charts. The game holds its position comfortably, despite sales being down 78% over its debut week. The collection of Mario games ends the month as the best-selling boxed video game in the UK, just ahead of Marvel's Avengers.

Speaking of which, Marvel's Avengers holds No.2 in the charts after a 21% drop in sales week-on-week.

Last week's other new releases tumble out of the Top Ten this week, with WWE 2K Battlegrounds falling from No.6 to No.11 (sales down 43% week-on-week), and PES 2021 dropping from No.9 to No.34 (sales down 64%).

Things now start picking up steam at physical retail with a number of big releases coming to market. This begins this week with the release of Star Wars Squadrons and Crash Bandicoot 4. This is followed a week later by the arrival of FIFA 21.

UK Chart Week 40 Roundup

Quote

Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time beat EA's Star Wars Squadrons to No.1 this week, with just 1,000 boxed sales separating the two games.

The latest Crash Bandicoot title follows the successful remakes of the first three Crash games (released in 2017 as Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy) and Crash Team Racing (released in 2018 as Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled). This new game is an entirely original release, although it still pays homage to the popular original trilogy.

It's unlikely Activision expected the new game to match the success of the more nostalgic remakes, which is just as well because Crash 4's launch sales are 80% lower than that of N.Sane Trilogy. Crash has a history with PlayStation, and so it's no surprise to see that 82% of sales were on PS4 with the remainder on Xbox One. The new game was not made for Nintendo Switch (at least not yet), which has been a popular platform for Crash games with big sales for the N.Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing.

Second place belongs to Star Wars: Squadrons, which is the latest Star Wars title from Electronic Arts. In terms of boxed sales, the game hasn't performed especially strongly, with launch sales 72% lower than that of last year's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (which is a very different genre). It's worth noting that due to the COVID-19, sales of new games have been stronger in the download space over the past six months compared with physical, so it's likely that Squadron's overall launch sales will be a lot closer to Fallen Order's debut week than it appears here (digital data is not included in these charts). EA has also been proactive in selling this game as a download.

The new game sold best on PS4, with 68% of sales coming on Sony's platform and the remainder on Xbox One.

The only other new title in the UK Top 40 boxed charts is Untitled Goose Game at No.34.

Last week's No.1, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, drops to No.3 after a 23% drop in sales week-on-week. While Marvel's Avengers falls from No.2 to No.5 with a 20% drop in sales week-on-week. Last week's new Mafia titles, Definitive Edition and Trilogy, hold on in the Top Ten at No.9 and No.10 respectively, with sales down 57% and 40% week-n-week

UK Chart Week 41 Roundup

Quote

Typically the biggest boxed game launch of the year, FIFA 21's opening week sales are down more than 42% over last year's game.

This is purely in terms of physical sales. FIFA's digital performance has rapidly grown alongside the success of the game's live service Ultimate Team mode. We won't know the game's digital performance until later in the week.

Another reason for the drop in performance will be the upcoming launch of PS5 and Xbox Series S and X, with consumers likely holding off for the next-generation version of the game.

However, even with such a fierce drop, FIFA 21 was still the biggest game launch of 2021 (so far), beating previous record holders The Last of Us: Part 2 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. FIFA 21 sold best on PS4, which accounted for 62% of the sales, followed by Xbox One (36%) and then Nintendo Switch (2%).

It's an EA top two this week, with Star Wars: Squadrons holding its position at No.2 despite a 55% drop in sales week-on-week. Squadrons was a bigger digital hit than a physical one, and would really have been No.1 last week if download data was counted.

That means last week's physical No.1, Crash Bandicoot: It's About Time, slips to No.3 with a 58% drop in sales.

Elsewhere, big Switch games Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons make up No.4, 5, 6 and 7.

October is a little quieter than we're used to this year, with a handful of Switch titles and a new World of Warcraft expansion making up many of the big releases. However, come the end of the month things start picking up as we hurtle towards the launches of PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in November

UK Chart Roundup (Week 42)

Quote

Nintendo Switch is the big winner in the UK physical charts following last week's Amazon Prime Day sales.

There are 18 Switch exclusive games in the Top 40, led by Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.2, which jumped 44% in sales over the week prior. The other big climbers for Nintendo were Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.3, with sales up 70%, followed by Minecraft for Switch at No.4 (sales up 95%), and then Ring Fit Adventure at No.5 (sales up 79%).

It wasn't all about Nintendo. Just Dance 2020 enjoyed a 233% sales jump, taking the game up ten places to No.7, Jumanji: The Video Game returns to the charts at No.14 after a 464% sale rise, F1 2020 is at No.15 due to a 220% sales leap, and Fallout 76 is at No.16 with a sales increase of more than 1000% week-on-week. In fact, 29 of the games in the Top 40 saw big sales increases week-on-week.

But Amazon's offers couldn't prevent FIFA 21 from comfortably securing a second straight week at No.1, despite a 65% drop in sales week-on-week. The EA game is one week away from overtaking Animal Crossing: New Horizons to become the biggest selling 2020 release at UK retail (so far). Of course, as revealed at the end of last week, the majority of FIFA 21's sales have been digital for the first time in the series' history. This data only includes sale of boxed physical products.

Other recent games did slip down the charts, however. Star Wars Squadrons drops from No.2 to No.8 after a 45% sales slide, while Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is down from No.3 to No.9 after a 47% sales decrease.

There is one new game in the charts this week, with Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid for Switch, PS4 and Xbox One debuting at No.38. Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which launched on Friday, is entirely absent from the GfK retail charts.

This is presumably because the game component is a free eShop download, and that the box itself simply contains the equipment needed to play it. In the rival GSD retail chart, Mario Kart Live was at No.2.

Ring fit has sold more physical copies than botw in Japan now.

why the leap then, and the opening line?

Like, why would people be buying Animal Crossing last week but not the week previous?

I think there were a lot of game discounts on Prime Day but I’m not 100%. Only one I saw on there personally was PES 2021 reduced from £25 to £20.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 43)

Quote

EA's FIFA 21 has retained the No.1 spot in the UK physical charts, despite a 50% drop in sales week-on-week.

It's the third consecutive physical No.1 for the football game, although sales remain lower than last year. However, the game has performed much better as a digital download so far this year compared with the previous iteration.

It's a very quiet week for new boxed releases. As a result, Nintendo Switch games dominate once again. Animal Crossing: New Horizons holds No.2 (sales down 11% week-on-week), Minecraft on Switch is at No.3 (sales down 15%), Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is at No.4 (down 25%), Super Mario 3D All Stars is at No.5 (down 7%) and Ring Fit Adventure is at No.6 (down 14%). The drop in sales follows last week's spike due to the Amazon Prime Day sales.

The only new release in the Top 40 is Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer at No.37. The game was initially released last year as a digital-only music-based spin-off of the Zelda series, developed by indie studio Brace Yourself Games.

Things do pick up significantly from this point on. Next week sees the launch of Watch Dogs Legion from Ubisoft, plus the enhanced Nintendo Switch port of Pikmin 3, and then we move into November when two new games consoles join the market.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 44)

Quote

The big games are starting to come to market, although sales have not got off to a great start, at least not in terms of physical sales.

Ubisoft's Watch Dogs Legion was the big game of the week, but it had to settle for No.2 in the charts behind FIFA 21. Physical game sales are 54% lower at launch compared with what Watch Dogs 2 managed in 2016. However, digital downloading has accelerated rapidly since 2016, and we won't know the digital performance until later in the week.

Elsewhere, Pikmin 3 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch lands at No.7. Unlike other Wii U ports to Switch, the Wii U version enjoyed the stronger launch, with Pikmin 3 Deluxe's opening week sales down 18.5% over the original. Again, digital data is not included.

Also new in the Top Ten is the latest in the Dark Pictures Anthology -- Little Hope -- which arrived in time for Halloween. The game is the next in the series following last year's Man of Medan. The launch sales for this game are 47% lower than last year's entry.

Again, it's worth reiterating that partially due to COVID-19, game sales have become predominantly digital this year.

Elsewhere, as previously mentioned FIFA 21 is still at No.1 despite a 24% sales drop week-on-week. Switch games continue to do well, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.3 (sales up 17%), Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.4 (sales up 35%), Minecraft on Switch at No.5 (sales up 11%) and Super Mario 3D All-Stars at No.6 (sales up 34%).

Next week is a little quieter in terms of major new releases, just ahead of the launch of Xbox Series X a week later. However, with a new lockdown called in the UK on Saturday, we may see a surge in game sales, even in the physical space.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 45)

Quote

The COVID-19 lockdown restarted in the UK last week, but unlike last time, it hasn't made a huge impact on physical video game sales -- at least not on Xbox One and PS4.

Overall, game sales rose 13% week-on-week, which is still impressive in a week where there were no significant game launches (and coming on the back of the launch of Watch Dogs: Legion the week before). PS4 and Xbox One game sales remained largely flat week-on-week, but Nintendo Switch game sales jumped 38%.

We will have to wait for later in the week to see its impact in terms of digital downloads.

FIFA 21 notched up its fifth consecutive week at No.1, despite sales dropping 5%. It is comfortably No.1, with the second placed game being Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch. The hit Nintendo game enjoyed a sales jump of 22% week-on-week, and it is one of a number of Switch games that saw weekly sales spikes. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.3 jumped 41% in sales, Minecraft (No.5) on Switch enjoyed a 39% bump, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is up 24% (No.6) and Ring Fit Adventure rose 69% in sales (No.7). The latter game was repeatedly sold out during the last lockdown as UK gamers used it to keep fit whilst stuck at home.

Last week's No.2 boxed game, the Ubisoft open world game Watch Dogs: Legion, drops to No.4 after a 58% fall in sales week-on-week. The game actually sold much better as a download during its launch week, as we revealed on Friday, and was really the best-selling game of that week (if we combine digital and physical together).

Although there were no major new games out this week, there were a number of smaller ones. The highest charting new game is L.O.L Surprise Remix: We Rule The World at No.10. The Nintendo Switch game is from licensed games specialists Nighthawk Interactive, and it's based on the popular doll brand L.O.L Surprise.

The next highest charting game is Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay at No.12, which is from Outright Games. 80% of the game's sales were on Nintendo Switch, with 14% coming on PS4 and 7% on Xbox One.

Meanwhile, EA's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit - Remastered enters the charts at No.35. The updated racing game launched on PS4 and Xbox One, with the PlayStation version accounting for 61% of sales.

The final new game in the charts is also a racing game -- Codemasters Dirt 5 at No.38. The game actually sold best on Xbox One (67% of sales). It looks like a poor start for such a popular franchise, but the game has been promoted heavily as one of the key launch games for Xbox Series X, which arrives next week.

As with all the GfK charts, this is purely physical game sales. Digital download data doesn't arrive until later in the week.

Finally, last week's new Nintendo game Pikmin 3: Deluxe drops from No.7 to No.27 after a 66% drop in sales week-on-week.

State of the market

Consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories reached $3.8 billion in October 2020, 14% higher compared to YA. Mobile, subscription, hardware and accessories were among the largest growth segments.

Year-to-date spending totaled $37.5 billion, 20% higher than the same period in 2019.

Content

FIFA 21 was the best-selling game of October, the first time a FIFA franchise release has launched at #1 in the U.S. market. FIFA 21 was the best-selling game of October on both PlayStation and Xbox platforms.

Watch Dogs: Legion debuted as the third best-selling game of October, despite having only three days of sales tracking in the month. Watch Dogs: Legion ranked 2nd on Xbox platforms, 3rd on PlayStation platforms.

NHL 21 entered the charts as the fourth best-selling game of October. Launch month dollar sales were the highest for an NHL release since the September 2015 launch of NHL 16.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit ranked as the fifth best-selling game of October, and was the best-selling game of the month on Nintendo platforms.

Nine of the top 20 best-selling titles of October were published by Nintendo.

UK Chart Roundup (Week 46)

Quote

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the best-selling UK boxed game in one of the biggest release weeks in video games history.

It did remarkably well, so well that it kept Call of Duty from making No.1 during its debut week for the first time in 13 years.

It's a surprise result, even with the Ubisoft viking game being on sale for a few days longer than Call of Duty (it was released on November 10th, while Call of Duty arrived November 13th). However, it is a very different games market this year due to COVID-19, with the majority of AAA Xbox and PlayStation game sales taking place digitally. As a result, we cannot say if Assassin's Creed was the biggest selling game of the week, only that it was the biggest selling boxed game.

In fact, a statement from Activision Blizzard's EMEAA MD Anna Malmhake said that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War "set a new record as the highest first day digital sales worldwide in franchise history". We will see how the game performed digitally in the UK later in the week, but expect good numbers.

In terms of physical sales, Assassin's Creed Valhalla had a massive week, with launch sales more than double that of its predecessor -- Assassin's Creed Odyssey. 42% of the game's sales came on PS4, and 18% came on PS5, despite the latter machine not coming out in the UK until next week. The rest of the sales (40%) came with the Xbox version. The game was marketed alongside the new games consoles released this week, the Xbox Series X and S. However, Ubisoft sold just one 'Xbox' SKU to cover all platforms -- including Xbox One -- which means it's impossible to know exactly which Xbox platform the game was bought for.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fared less well as a boxed release, with launch sales down more than 64% compared with last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. We'll know the full picture of the game's performance once the digital sales are in, but it's also worth noting the impact of Call of Duty: Warzone -- the hugely successful free-to-play game released in March this year.

39% of Call of Duty's sales came on PS4, 34% was for the Xbox One version, 17% for the PS5 SKU and 9% for the Xbox Series-only version.

Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty and the launch of two Xbox consoles would have made for a massive release week on their own, but Sony also made available its PS5 games to customers this week (ahead of next week's launch), and those games also performed strongly in the charts.

The third best-selling game was the new Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the successor to 2018's hit Marvel's Spider-Man. Boxed sales of this new game are 56% lower than the original, although it's worth noting that Miles Morales is not billed as a full sequel to that game, but rather a shorter spin-off (and again, we will need to consider the impact of digital sales).

It is, however, billed as one of the big launch games for PlayStation 5, and 71% of its sales were for the new console (with 29% of sales coming on PS4). We'll get a better picture of its debut performance once the PS5 actually launches in the UK next week.

Other PS5 games in the charts include Demon's Souls at No.6, Sackboy: A Big Adventure at No.13 and Godfall at No.16. Demon's Souls and Godfall are only on PS5, whereas Sackboy saw 89% of sales coming on the PS5 version, with the remainder on PS4. Again, this is all just boxed games data.

There were other new releases in the charts, too. Just Dance 2021 makes No.11, with the vast majority (89%) of unit sales coming on Nintendo Switch. The game has performed very well, with launch sales 133% higher than last year's Just Dance 2020.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon makes No.20, with 65% of unit sales coming on PS4 and 35% on 'Xbox'. Finally, Planet Coaster: Console Edition comes in at No.17. Remarkably, the game sold almost exactly the same number of copies on PS4, Xbox and PS5.

Elsewhere, NBA 2K21 re-enters the chart at No.31 thanks to the PS5 and Xbox Series versions of the game (sales up 185% week-on-week). The PS5 edition accounted for 63% of sales, with 14% coming on the Xbox Series devices. Indeed, there were three Xbox Series-specific released, Call of Duty (the best-selling Xbox Series-only game), NBA 2K21 (No.2) and Deep Silver's Maneater (No.3).

Elsewhere, FIFA 21 drops from No.1 to No.4 after a 24% fall in sales week-on-week, there isn't currently a version of the game for the new consoles.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch falls to No.5 after a slight 7% drop. And Super Mario 3D All-Stars falls one place to No.7, despite the game's sales actually increasing 40% week-on-week. Nintendo has begun a new UK TV marketing campaign for the Mario collection.

Watch Dogs: Legion drops from No.2 to No.10 due to a 36% fall in sales week-on-week. The game is enhanced on the Xbox Series machines, and this week 57% of sales were of the Xbox SKU.

Last week's highest charting new release, L.O.L Surprise! Remix: We Rule the World falls from No.10 to No.35 after a 54% drop in sales. Meanwhile, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit - Remastered falls from No.35 to No.40, despite the late arrival of the Nintendo Switch edition. Sales of the EA racing game rose 1% week-on-week. Codemasters' Dirt 5, which also launched last week, has fallen out of the Top 40 entirely.

Overall, more than 790,000 boxed games were sold in the UK last week, a rise of 96% week-on-week. They generated £36.4 million at UK retail, which is a spike of 165% week-on-week. Despite the console not being out yet, PS5 games accounted for almost 19% of all games sold and nearly 25% of the revenue.
