NPD (US) February Sales Data

Consumer in the United States spent $1.05 billion on gaming-related products in February, according to

industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That’s up 4 percent compared to $1.01 billion in February 2018.

The uptick in sales is due primarily to big game launches like Anthem and Jump Force. But the industry also saw growth in accessories and game cards as people rush out to purchase new gamepads. That was enough to patch over the hardware space, which is beginning to retract after years of growth.

“Gains in software, accessories, and game card spending offset declines in hardware,” said Piscatella. “Year-to-date spending across tracked video game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards has increased 3 percent when compared to 2018, to $2 billion.”

Here are the results for February 2019

February 2019 Dollar Sales   Feb’18 Feb’19 Change

Total Video Game Sales   $1.007 billion $1.047 billion 4%
Video Games Hardware   $316m $277m -12%
PC & Video Games Software (PC, Console and Portable; Physical and Full Game Digital Formats from the STEAM, PlayStation and Xbox platforms)   $397m $457m 15%
Video Games Accessories & Game Cards   $294m $313m 6%

NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but it also gets digital data directly from publishers. But not every company participates. For example, Nintendo doesn’t share its first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not provide its Battle.net sales.

These charts are sorted by dollar sales — not number of units sold.

Software sales were up in February compared to the same period in 2018.

“Dollar sales of tracked console, portable, and PC video game software totaled $457 million in February 2019, growing 15 percent when compared to a year ago,” said Piscatella.

That’s impressive in part because of the blockbuster launch of Monster Hunter: World last February. But Anthem and Jump Force both had strong debuts and other games continue to sell well.

“Year-to-date dollar sales of tracked console, portable, and PC video game software reached $896 million,” said Piscatella. “That’s 10 percent higher when compared to a year ago.”

Anthem

“Anthem was the best-selling game of February 2019, and it is now the second best-selling game of 2019,” said Piscatella. “Anthem represents the second-highest launch month sales ever recorded for a BioWare developed game, trailing only the March 2012 release of Mass Effect 3.”

And that doesn’t even include Anthem’s PC digital sales. More importantly, it doesn’t count the people who signed up for EA’s Access Origin Premier service for $15 per month. That figure is likely significant since that membership now gets players access to a library of older games as well as Battlefield V and Madden NFL 19.

Jump Force

“Jump Force debuted as February’s second best-selling game,” said Piscatella. “Launch month sales volume of Jump Force is the third-highest total ever achieved for a title published by Bandai Namco Games. Jump Force is currently the fourth best-selling game of 2019 year-to-date.”

Never overestimate the tastes of anime fans.

Kingdom Hearts 3

“Kingdom Hearts III ranked as the third best-selling game of February, and maintains its number one selling position year to date,” said Piscatella.”Over its first two months in market, Kingdom Hearts III remains the fastest selling game in franchise history, exceeding the time-aligned sales of Kingdom Hearts II by over 80 percent.”

Metro Exodus

“Metro Exodus was the eighth best-selling game of February,” said Piscatella. “Launch-month sales of Metro Exodus set a new franchise record, besting the month-one sales of Metro: Last Light by nearly 50 percent.”

Hardware and accessories

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of the month. It also generated the most hardware dollars for Nintendo since February 2011. You can read more about the hardware results right here.

For accessories and game cards, sales are climbing once again. This segment generated $313 million, which is up 6 percent year-over-year.

“Gamepad spending gains were the primary driver of the increase,” said Piscatella. “Nintendo gamepad sales increased nearly 80 percent in the month of February, and are now up approximately 90 percent year to date.”

“Year-to-date spending on accessories and game cards has increased 8 percent when compared to a year ago, to $580 million,” said Piscatella. “As with February, gamepads are the primary contributor to spending gains.

UK Chart Roundup 13th April 2019

UK Chart, week ending April 13th 2019

Quote

The Division 2 is top of the UK physical sales chart for the second week running. Ubisoft's game was the best-selling physical title in the UK for the week ending April 13.

Immediately below the looter-shooter lies FIFA 19, which remains at No.2, according to sales monitor Chart-Track. That's followed by Red Dead Redemption 2, which is up three places to No.3.

It's been a relatively quiet week for new releases, with only one new game in the chart. That game is Dangerous Driving, which enters at No.34. The two new Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits miss out on the top 40 altogether.

You can read the full top 10 sales chart for this week below, courtesy of UKIE and GfK Chart-Track. Note this table does not include digital sales data, and so should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.

World War Z Enters at No1

23/Apr/2019

“World War Z” the co-op shooter based on the book and film of the same name begins life at the top of the All Formats Chart.

“Tom Clancy’s The Division 2” falls from No1 to No3, while “FIFA 19” enjoys a strong Easter, holding on to No2, buoyed by a price drop. “Snooker 19: The Official Video Game” enters the chart at No9, while renewed sales of the PC version push “Anthem” back in to the Top 40 at No15. The release of the Switch version of “Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster” marks a re-entry for the title at No20 with the only other new game to break in to the Top 40 being “My Time at Portia” at No27.

UK Chart Roundup 27th April 2019

UK Chart, week ending April 27th, 2019

Sony's Days Gone comfortably beat Mortal Kombat 11 in the UK boxed games charts.

Its launch week physical sales are 27% lower than last year's PS4 exclusive action adventure God of War. It is actually a decent performance when you consider this is a new IP - and the review scores for this new game have not been as impressive as last year's multi-award winning effort.

Mortal Kombat 11 had to settle for No.2 as a result. The game's debut performance is 43.6% smaller than 2015's Mortal Kombat X (note: digital sales are not included, and download sales have improved significantly over the last four years). However, sales are slightly up over 2017's Injustice 2, which is another beat 'em up developed by NetherRealm featuring DC characters.

Mortal Kombat 11 sold best on PS4, with 71% of sales coming on Sony's platform.

UK Chart Roundup 4th May 2019

Quote

In another far too quiet week for the UK retail charts, the top four entries headed up by Days Gone stayed exactly where they were last week.

With no new releases or major sales to bump titles up or down, Days Gone remained at No.1 with a 60% decline in sales week-over-week. Mortal Kombat 11 came in behind it at No.2, seeing a 74% drop from last week.

FIFA 19 and Red Dead Redemption 2, at No.3 and No.4 respectively, saw less dramatic sales drops of 10% and 3% from last week. In fact, everything in this week's top ten saw losses from last week save for Grand Theft Auto V, which jumped back up to No.5 by riding on a 14% increase in sales from last week.

This week's only new release was Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, which had its new Nintendo Switch edition debut at No.15.

UK Chart Roundup May 11th 2019

Quote

It is one of the slowest weeks for boxed video game sales all year, and thus Sony's Days Gone retains its position at the top of the UK charts.

However, the gap between it and Mortal Kombat 11 in second place is narrowing. Both games were released at the same time and have held No.1 and No.2 every week since.

In fact, last week's entire Top Six is exactly the same. But it was a close week for sales. In fact, just 12,500 units separated No.40 from No.1.

The new-entry of the week comes in at No.15. Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package makes a decent debut on Nintendo Switch. Remember, these figures do not include digital sales, which account for roughly half the market.

There was a heavy fall in sales for From Software's Sekiro: Shadows Dice Twice, which plummeted 27 places to No.39. The game suffered a 60% sales drop week-on-week.

Elsewhere, The Evil Within II is back in the charts. Bethesda's horror game is on sale for just over £5, and rises to No.32. And there was a similar jump in sales for Hitman 2 (No.23), which enjoyed a price reduction of its own to £20.

Quote

Thanks to the NPD Group and Mat Piscatella for the breakdown. Note. This NPD report only covers the U.S. Video Games Market.

Here is the breakdown for April 2019:

  • Total: $842 million (Up 1% from $838 million in April 2018)
  • Hardware: $160 million (Down 29% from $225 million)
  • PC and console software: $427 million (Up 15% from $370 million)
  • Accessories: $256 million (Up 5% from $243 million)

April 2019 tracked spending across video game hardware, software, accessories and game cards totaled $842 million, gaining 1 percent when compared to a year ago. Growth in software and accessory & game card spending offset declines in hardware.

Year-to-date spending across tracked video game hardware, software, accessories & game cards is down 2 percent when compared to 2018, to $4.0 billion. Declines in hardware spending have offset growth in sales of accessories & game cards.

Software (All notes refer to dollar sales)

Dollar sales of tracked console, portable and PC video game software reached $427 million in April 2019, gaining 15 percent when compared to a year ago.
Year-to-date dollar sales of tracked console, portable and PC video game software totaled $1.9 billion, 4 percent higher when compared to a year ago.

Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game of April and instantly becomes the 2nd best-selling game of 2019 year-to-date. Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game of the month on all platforms on which it released: PC, PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One.

Mortal Kombat 11 represents the first time a third-party published Nintendo Switch game was the platform's top seller in a month since Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle topped the Nintendo Switch chart in September 2017.

Days Gone was the 2nd best-selling game of April, with debut month sales that rank as the 7th highest in history for a Sony-published title. After just one month in market, Days Gone is the best-selling game produced by Sony Bend Studio in lifetime revenues.

MLB The Show 19 ranks as the third best-selling game of April and is now the 10th best-selling game of 2019. It is also the best-selling sports title of 2019 year-to-date. MLB The Show 19 remains the best-selling game in franchise history on a time-aligned basis.

Hardware & Accessories

Hardware spending in April 2019 fell 29 percent when compared to a year ago, to $160 million. Nintendo Switch sales growth was offset by declines across all other hardware platforms. Total spending on accessories & game cards grew 5 percent in April 2019 when compared to a year ago, to $256 million. Gains for both game card and gamepad spending drove overall performance.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of both April as well as year-to-date across both unit and dollar sales. The Nintendo Switch 32GB with neon red and blue joy cons is the best-selling individual hardware item of 2019.

Amiibo Super Smash Bros Series 1 Character Packswere the best-selling video game accessory of April, while the PS4 DualShock 4 Black Wireless Controller remains the best-selling accessory year-to-date.

UK Chart Roundup May 18th 2019

    Quote

Bethesda's Rage 2 has ended Days Gone's three week stint at the top of the UK Boxed Charts.

Despite charting a place higher than the first game (Rage launched the week after FIFA 12 back in October 2011), the sequel hasn't come close to matching the original. In fact, Rage 2 physical sales are just a quarter of what the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game manage.

The game sold best on PS4, accounting for 57% of sales, followed by Xbox One on 38%. PC accounted for 5%, although the majority of PC sales will have come via Steam.

It continues to be a weak physical games market, which does mean some more unusual games are managing to score decent chart positions. A Plague's Tale: Innocence from Asobo Studios and Focus Home Interactive manages to reach No.9.

The only other new game in the Top 40 is the remastered version of Sniper Elite Version 2, which makes No.13 - just 100 units from reaching the Top Ten. The game sold best on PS4 (49% of sales), followed by Xbox One (30%) and then Nintendo Switch (21%).

Last week's No.1 Days Gone drops to No.2 with a 38% fall in sales, Mortal Kombat 11 moves from No.2 to No.4 (down 47%). The game performed solidly last week due to a Switch version landing at retail. Meanwhile, last week's new release, Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package on Nintendo Switch, drops from No.15 to No.38 (down 57%).

Sneaking in at No.40 is Xbox's pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves. The title has seen an increase in sales over the last two weeks following its inclusion in the new All-Digital Xbox One console.

First ever UK digital chart, week ending May 26th

    Quote

Total War: Three Kingdoms was comfortably the best-selling download game in the UK for the week ending May 26th.

The first ever weekly UK digital charts have started to arrive, and it reveals that Total War would actually have been the real No.1 for that week. Previously, based on physical data, we reported that Team Sonic Racing was that week's No.1 game. However, by comparing the two reports, GamesIndustry.biz can reveal that Total War was actually the better seller.

The digital chart looks quite different to its physical counterpart. Titles such as GTA V (No.2) and Minecraft (No.4) perform even better in these charts, and regularly appear in the Top Five (they were No.1 and No.2 the week prior to this one). Meanwhile, discounting can have a significant impact upon the Top Ten. For instance, Cities: Skylines finds itself rising to No.6 from No.94 thanks to some price activity.

‘FIFA 19’ takes home the trophy thanks to Sony's 'Days of Play'

The start of Sony’s ‘Days of Play’ price promotions and improved hardware bundle offers have enabled ‘FIFA 19’ to shoot back to the top of the All Formats Chart this week. It is the first time it has been at No1 since the first week of the year, pushing last week’s chart topper ‘Blood & Truth’ down to No5.

The ‘Days of Play’ event kicked off on Friday with PS4 exclusives ‘Days Gone’ and ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ both benefiting. ‘Days Gone’ climbs two places to No2, while ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ is boosted 12 places, up from No15 to No3.

Price drops on the PSVR Starter and Mega Packs means VR titles such as ‘PlayStation VR Worlds’ and ‘Astro Bot Rescue Mission’ etc. are back in the Top 40. The highest new entry this week is ‘Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth’ for 3DS at No18, followed by a debut at No20 for ‘MotoGP 19’.

Fifa 19 is at the Top of it's League

    17/Jun/2019

With the continuation of Sony’s ‘Days of Play’ price promotions and improved hardware bundle offers, we are seeing a very familiar chart to that of last week.

Maintaining their podium positions are ‘Fifa 19’ in first, ‘Day’s Gone’ in second and ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ in third. ‘Forza Horizon 4’ speeds its way from No12 to No4 in the all formats charts. ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ moves down one spot to No5 and ‘Battlefield V’ jumps up from No11 to No6. Unfortunately there are no new additions to the all formats charts this week.

    Quote

Thanks to the NPD Group and Mat Piscatella for the breakdown. Note. This NPD report only covers the U.S. Video Games Market.

Here is the breakdown for May 2019:
    • Total: $641 million (down 11% from $717 million in May 2018).
    • Hardware: $149 million (down 20% from $186 million)
    • Console and PC Software: $262 million (down 13% from $302 million)
    • Accessories: $230 million (up 0% from $229 million)
May 2019 tracked spending across video game hardware, software, accessories and game cards totaled $641 million, 11 percent lower than a year ago. Declines in both software and hardware spending drove overall performance.

Year-to-date spending across tracked video game hardware, software, accessories and game cards is down 3 percent when compared to 2018, to $4.7 billion. Declines in hardware spending have offset growth in sales of accessories and game cards.

Software (All notes refer to dollar sales)

Dollar sales of tracked console, portable and PC video game software reached $262 million in May 2019, falling 13 percent when compared to a year ago. May 2019 experienced the lowest software sales for a May month since 2013 ($222 million). Total dollar sales of new releases in May 2019 are the lowest for new releases in a May month since May 1998.

Mortal Kombat 11 repeated as the best-selling game of the month and is now the best-selling game of 2019 year to date. Month 2 sales of Mortal Kombat 11 nearly doubled the comparable sales of any other Mortal Kombat game in the history of the franchise. Mortal Kombat 11 was the best-selling game of May on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Days Gone was the second best-selling game of May, repeating its April performance, and is now the eighth best-selling game of 2019 (year to date).

Minecraft returns to the monthly top 10 best-sellers list, ranking as the ninth best-selling game of May. It also ranked as the seventh best-selling game of the month on Xbox One.

    Hardware & Accessories

Hardware spending in May 2019 fell 20 percent when compared to a year ago, to $149 million. Nintendo Switch sales growth was offset by declines across all other hardware platforms.

Year-to-date hardware spending has declined 17 percent versus a year ago, to $1.1 billion. As with the month of May, Nintendo Switch sales growth was offset by declines across all other hardware platforms.

Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of both May as well as year-to-date across both unit and dollar sales.

Total May 2019 spending on accessories and game cards was flat when compared to a year ago, at $230 million. Year-to-date sales of accessories and game cards have increased 3 percent to $1.4 billion when compared to a year ago.

The PS4 DualShock 4 Black Wireless Controller was the best-selling accessory of May 2019, and remains the best-selling accessory year to date.
