NPD (US) December sales data

Quote

HARDWARE

Nintendo Switch sales are off the charts. The system was the best-selling gaming console in the United States in December and for all of 2018, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. The Switch sold well throughout the year, but the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gave it a massive boost to close out the last month.

The hybrid home/handheld system outsold the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But it didn’t just outsell them, it had the best December of any console this generation.

“Nintendo Switch generated the highest December-month hardware dollar sales for a single platform since the Nintendo Wii in December 2009,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “And it achieved the highest December unit sales for a single platform since December 2010.”

The Switch isn’t having a momentary flash alongside Super Smash Bros. Nintendo’s device was able to edge out PlayStation 4 for the 2018 hardware crown overall.

“Nintendo Switch ends 2018 as the year’s best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars,” said Piscatella. “Annual unit and dollar sales of Nintendo Switch are the highest annual total for any hardware platform since the PlayStation 4 in 2015.”

The Switch was the primary contributor to 2018’s overall hardware unit and dollar sales, which are hitting a high for the last decade.

“Console hardware unit and dollar sales reached their highest annual totals since 2009,” said Piscatella.

But it’s not just the Switch having a strong year. While hardware sales were down overall in December, every system saw year-over-year growth in 2018.

“For the 2018 year, hardware spending increased 8 percent to $5.1 billion,” said Piscatella. “Console hardware sales drove the growth, as PlayStation 4, Plug N Play devices, Switch and Xbox One all experienced year-on-year gains.”

SOFTWARE

Gaming fans in the United States spent $3.4 billion on video game software, hardware, and accessories in December, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That is up 2 percent year-over-year. The increase was due primarily to accessories and game-card sales.

“Gains in accessories and game-card spending offset declines in hardware and software spend,” This is the highest total tracked consumer spend for a December month since December 2015.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is already a blockbuster hit. It is the top-selling game of December and the No. 5 best-selling game for all of 2018. What’s stunning about this is that Nintendo’s games do not include digital sales on this chart. Call of Duty, Red Dead, and Spider-Man all do — at least on consoles.

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the best-selling game of December 2018 and the fifth best-selling game of 2018, despite digital sales not currently being tracked by The NPD Group,” Piscatella said. “Packaged software launch month dollar sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate exceeded those of the previous best in franchise history, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, by over 70 percent.”

Red Dead’s sales are also still in a category of their own. It was the best-selling game of all of 2018.

Call of Duty, meanwhile, also continues to chug along like a freight train.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the third best-selling game of December,” said Piscatella. “And it finishes the year as the second best-selling title of 2018. 2018 marks the tenth consecutive year that Call of Duty is the best-selling video game franchise of the year.”

The best-selling games of December 2018 in the U.S.
NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but it also gets digital data directly from publishers. But not every company participates. For example, Nintendo doesn’t share its first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not provide its Battle.net sales.

These charts are sorted by dollar sales — not number of units sold.

The return of Capcom’s biggest franchise

    28/Jan/2019

Capcom’s biggest franchise storms the All Formats Chart this week with ‘Resident Evil 2’, the remake of the 20 year old original, debuting at No1.

The original PS1 ‘Resident Evil 2’ game launched at No1 back in April 1998 and since then the franchise has registered six more different All Formats No1 titles. We may only be 4 weeks in to 2019, but it is the biggest launch of the year so far and Capcom’s biggest lauch since ‘Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’ exactly 2 years ago. Both ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ climb one place to No2 and No3 respectively, while last week’s No1 ‘New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe’ drops to No4. A price promotion on ‘Just Cause 4’ helps it back in to the All Formats Top 40 at No22.

UK Chart Summary - week ending 16th Feb

    Quote

Far Cry: New Dawn is this week's No.1 game in the UK boxed retail charts.

It was the most competitive release week since before Christmas, with four big new games entering the Top 20.

Although Far Cry managed to top the charts, it isn't an especially impressive opening week. The game's launch week sales are 86.5 per cent down over last year's Far Cry 5. Of course, this is a spin-off Far Cry title, and so the comparison isn't overly fair. Yet even compared to 2016's Far Cry Primal (the previous spin-off), sales are a fraction of what we'd typically expect (Far Cry Primal sold almost four times as many units in its first week as New Dawn has). 60 per cent of Far Cry: New Dawn sales came on PS4, 39 per cent on Xbox One, with the rest on PC (physical sales only).

A company that will likely be feeling happier with the result this week is Deep Silver. Metro Exodus missed out on No.1 by just 2,000 units. Yet more significantly, the game has posted a better opening week than 2013's Metro Last Light (released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). This result is even more impressive when you consider the growth of digital sales in the six years between the two titles (digital game sales are not counted in this data).

Launch physical sales for Metro Exodus are almost 50 per cent higher than Last Light. 57 per cent of Metro Exodus sales came on PS4.

Next up in terms of new releases is Bandai Namco's Jump Force at No.4. Its a strong opening performance for the fighting game, and continues an impressive few weeks for the publisher (following recent strong sales of Tales Of and Ace Combat). The game performed best on PS4, accounting for 76 per cent of the game's launch sales.

The most disappointing launch of the week belongs to Microsoft's Crackdown 3, which only made No.13. The game's launch sales are barely 10 per cent of what Crackdown 2 managed in 2010. Of course, the industry was very different back then. Xbox 360 was the market leading console, digital sales were not as significant as they are today (again, only physical is counted here) and Crackdown 3 will likely have picked up a fair few users via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service (which isn't included here).

NPD (US) January 2019 sales data

    Quote

Gaming fans in the United States spent $893 million at U.S. retailers and on full-game digital downloads in January, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That’s down 19 percent from the same period in 2018. Those sales declines are largely due to a tough comparison because 2018 was such a huge year for both hardware and software sales. January 2018 also saw the release of Monster Hunter: World, one of the industry’s big successes last year.

“All segments of spending reflected double-digit percentage declines when compared to January 2018,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Despite declines when compared to a year ago, January 2019 spending was the second highest market total achieved in a January month since the $917 million reached in January 2013.”

Big releases like Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe helped power those sales. But they faced an extremely tough comparison to Monster Hunter: World, which ended 2018 as the No. 9 best-selling game in the United States as tracked by NPD.

Here are results from January 2019

    • Total: $893 million (down 19 percent from $1.101 billion in January 2018)
    • Hardware: $199 million (down 28 percent from $278 million)
    • PC and console software: $427 million (down 18 percent from $520 million)
    • Accessories and game cards: $267 million (down 12 percent from $303 million)

It’s important to keep in mind that NPD does not include digital microtransaction and DLC sales in these numbers. So if a game like Fortnite is sucking up a lot of cash, you would not see that reflected here.

Also, be sure to check out the best-selling games and financial results for all of 2018 in our story right here.

    Let’s do the software charts.

    Software

NPD tracks physical sales at retailers, but it also gets digital data directly from publishers. But not every company participates. For example, Nintendo doesn’t share its first-party sales, and Activision Blizzard does not provide its Battle.net sales.

These charts are sorted by dollar sales — not number of units sold.

The best-selling games of January 2019 in the U.S.

    1. Kingdom Hearts III
    2. Resident Evil 2 2019
    3. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe*

    20. Super Mario Odyssey*

    *Digital sales not included
    **PC digital not included
***Digital for Xbox and PlayStation included, but not PC or Nintendo eshop

Overall, software was down due primarily to sales on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Those consoles saw a sharp year-over-year decline in game sales. Again, that is likely because Monster Hunter: World launched in January 2018.

“Dollar sales of tracked console, portable and PC game software totaled $427 million, an 18 percent declined compared to a year ago,” said Piscatella. “Double-digit percentage software sales growth on the Nintendo Switch platform was offset by declines across all other platforms.”

    Kingdom Hearts III

“Kingdom Hearts III was the best-selling game of January 2019,” said Piscatella. “Total launch month dollar sales of Kingdom Hearts III were 2.5-times that of the previous franchise best, Kingdom Hearts II, which debuted on the PlayStation 2 in the March 2006 tracking period. This is the second month in history that a Kingdom Hearts game has topped the best-sellers chart; Kingdom Hearts II was the best-selling game of April 2006.”

    Resident Evil 2

“Resident Evil 2 ranked second on January’s best-sellers chart, driving more than 2.8-times higher dollar sales than the launch month of the original Resident Evil 2, which was released in the January 1998 tracking period on PlayStation,” said Piscatella. “It was January’s best-selling game on the Xbox One platform.”

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

“New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe entered the January charts as the third best-selling game of the month, “said Piscatella. “Launch month dollar sales of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe were more than 30 percent higher than that of New Super Mario Bros. U, which launched on the Wii U in November 2012.”

    Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

“Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown set a new franchise record as launch month dollar sales totaled more than 80 percent higher than October 2007’s Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation,” said Piscatella.

Week Ending 23/02 UK Chart roundup

    Quote

Anthem comfortably claimed No.1 in the UK boxed charts last week.

The EA game performed best on PS4, accounting for 54 per cent of sales. 40 per cent came on Xbox One, with the remainder on PC.

The game sold comfortably more than last week's big new games, including Far Cry: New Dawn and Metro Exodus. But it isn't the fastest-selling game of the year, that is a position currently held by Resident Evil 2 and then Kingdom Hearts III.

Of course, as an online-focused game, it's likely Anthem performed well as a download release. The charts data does not currently factor in digital sales, making any meaningful analysis impossible.

Last week's big games all slipped down the charts. Ubisoft's Far Cry: New Dawn suffered the smallest drop in sales - down 43 per cent week-on-week - and the game falls to No.2.

Metro: Exodus also suffered a relatively small week-on-week decline (down 55 per cent) and the game tumbles to No.5.

Jump Force dropped the furthest, from No.4 to No.17 with a 64 per cent sales drop. This isn't especially unusual for a game with a very specific audience.

While Crackdown 3's sales are down 51 per cent and drops to No.26.

Some of the big games of Christmas, however, saw a sales uptick. FIFA 19 enjoyed a 44 per cent sales improvement partially due to some small price promotion, and the game rose to No.3. Forza Horizon 4 also benefitted from some price activity, and the game rose 82 per cent in sales, taking the game from No.15 to No.6.

There were no other new releases in the charts. After a barrage of new games these last two weeks, the number of major new titles begins to slow for a few weeks. March is full of new titles, but nothing particularly AAA, with the notable exception of Ubisoft's The Division 2.

The Division 2 Debuts at No1

    18/Mar/2019

‘Tom Clancy’s The Division 2’ storms to the top of the All Formats Chart relegating last week’s No1 ‘Devil May Cry 5’ down to No6.

Rockstar/Take 2 grab No2 and No3 with ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ a non-mover at No2 despite promotions helping sales increase this week, while ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ sits one place behind after jumping seven places. ‘FIFA 19’ climbs one place to No4 ahead of ‘The Lego Movie 2 Videogame’ at No5, boosted by the launch of a new Switch version. ‘One Piece World Seeker’ is the only other title to break in to the Top 40, new at No28.
