Switch fastest selling console this gen. Nintendo has also become the overall top-selling US software publisher so far in 2018.

Spoiler

The Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation during its 21 months on sale in the US, it has been confirmed.

The news comes from American market research company The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. From its launch in March 2017 until November 2018, the Switch has sold more than 8.7 million units, outpacing US sales of all other current-generation systems at the same point in their life cycles.

The good news keeps on coming for the gaming giant, too, as Nintendo has also become the overall top-selling US software publisher so far in 2018. Again, this news comes from NPD data which has tracked sales up until November 2018; sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate should only boost this statistic when added at a later date.

Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, has said the following:

“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch. We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”

It's certainly been another good year for Nintendo in terms of sales, with records being smashed all over the place over the last few months.

A Red Christmas

It’s a Red Christmas as Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ holds on to top spot to claim this year’s X-mas No1.

It is only their 2nd X-mas No1 after ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’ claimed the festive crown back in 2002. It also denies either ‘FIFA’ or ‘Call of Duty’ from recording the most ever Christmas No1s as they are both currently level with eight. The perennial giants from EA and Activision are also non-movers with ‘FIFA 19’ at No2 and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ at No3. Last minute Christmas shopping and winter sales give most titles a sales boost as the All Formats Top 10 shuffles amongst itself including ‘Battlefield V’ rising 3 places to No4.

Couple of reports on Eurogamer made me wonder how gaming history/retro gaming will be different in the not too distant future.

One story suggests 80% of game sales are now digital downloads, whilst another is about how the Lego LotR games have today been pulled from digital stores (licensing issues/expiry).

So if the future means we can't fall back on hardcopies then some games may be lost to you forever (if you don't buy them before licence goes).

I've never really seen how it's any different to physical beyond the 2nd hand market. It's not like you can go and pick up a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga whenever you want either, and those physical games are only going to get fewer, rarer, and more expensive as time goes on. The only reasonable way to get out of print games if there's any sort of rarity is digitally, be that legally or through a rip posted online

Not that I want an all digital future, but both have their strengths and flaws

Not wrong, just those figures were only for the U.K. and only for last year (compared to 2017) @Sly Reflex @wiivo 2.0.

I’ve added a clarification to the previous post for other folks that didn’t realise they were U.K. figures relating to 2018 - comparing to 2017 - only, not commenting on lifetime sales or worldwide 2018/LTD sales figures.

UK boxed software sales slip in 2018, but hardware is up

Quote

£770 million was generated by UK boxed video game sales in 2018.

The latest data from GfK/UKIE shows that the revenue generated from physical video games declined 2.8 per cent.

The actual number of boxed games sold last year was 22 million, a bigger drop of 7.1 per cent.

The reason the revenue drop was smaller than the physical drop was due to the sale of more higher priced products, particularly Nintendo Switch games. Indeed, Nintendo Switch is the only platform which increased its software sales year-on-year (unsurprising for a console in its second year, and considering the machine was only on sale for ten months of 2017). Switch game sales increased 90.1 per cent over 2017 (and revenue increased 73.4 per cent).

It's a disappointing result for games retailers, who might have expected a small improvement in sales with the number of major titles released in the latter half of the year. However, key titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, FIFA 19 and Battlefield V sold fewer units than previous titles.

Note: This is just physical games, digital is not included.

The official hardware numbers have yet to come in, although GamesIndustry.biz understands that more consoles were sold in 2018 than 2017. PS4 remarkably saw an increase in console sales and shifted over one million units, while Nintendo Switch was the big growth area, with a sales increase of more than 20 per cent year-on-year. PS4 remained the No.1 console for the year. In total, just shy of 2.5 million games machines were sold last year in the UK.
