Spider-Man sales continue to impress

Quote

It's the week before FIFA, and therefore the quiet before the inevitable retail storm.

It means that Spider-Man is free to retain its place at the top of the UK Boxed Charts, despite a 57% dip in sales week-on-week.

The PS4 exclusive has already surpassed the total sell-through of God of War (physical sales only) and is now a week or two away from eclipsing the multi-format Far Cry 5 as the biggest release of the year. Although, of course, FIFA 19 will claim that prize come Friday.

It is pretty much unchanged at the top with Shadow of the Tomb Raider retaining its No.2 spot with a 52% dip in sales week-on-week, which is a solid performance for a second week on sale. Tomb Raider hasn't lit up the charts, but the second week sell-through suggests it may still find a sizeable audience once the Christmas sales period is over.

Meanwhile, with Spyro jumping out of September and into November, it gives sister product Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy even more opportunity to sell and sell and sell. The Activision Blizzard game rose up a place in the charts to No.3. The game has now been in the charts or 65 weeks.

UK Chart, week ending September 29th

Quote

FIFA 19 is already the biggest UK video game of 2018, but its opening week physical sales have fallen sharply.

The game's week one sales are down 25% compared with FIFA 18's arrival one year ago.

Of course, these GfK figures only factor in physical games sold and does not include downloads. The numbers suggest that this year's FIFA either had a comparatively disappointing first week, or there has been a sharp acceleration in the movement from physical to digital. Or, perhaps more likely, a combination of both.

The PS4 version of FIFA 19 accounted for 64% of sales, with Xbox One accounting for 35% and the Switch version the remaining 1%. Sales of the games on legacy platforms (Xbox 360, PS3) were negligible.

The arrival of FIFA means that Spider-Man drops to No.2 for the week. Sony's game is now the second best-selling game of the year as it has overtaken Far Cry 5 in just four weeks. It's an impressive achievement for the PS4 title, as it is only available on one platform (admittedly, the UK's most popular console).

Also dropping a place due to FIFA is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which falls from No.2 to No.3. Despite a disappointing first week, the game has had solid sales since, and suggests that the Square Enix title will still find a decent audience.

Outside of the top titles, Sega's Valkyria Chronicles IV debuts at No.9, with the PS4 version accounting for most of the sales (54%), followed by Switch (39%) and then Xbox One (7%).

Meanwhile, the Switch release of Dragon Ball Fighterz sees that title return to the Top 40 at No.29. Hardware bundling of Project Cars and Tekken 7 means that both Bandai Namco games re-enter the charts at No.19 and No.20.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launch sales top franchise records for current console generation

Quote

Strong first week sales for the Ancient Greece-set Assassin's Creed.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey had the best launch week performance in the franchise for the current console generation, publisher Ubisoft announced.

The Ancient Greece-set entry in the 2007-launched series released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 5.

“We are incredibly proud of what the team accomplished with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and humbled by the amazing reception from critics and players,” said Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Geoffroy Sardin in a press release. “Based on the quality of the game and the very encouraging reactions from players, we expect Odyssey to be one of the top performing Assassin’s Creed games of all-time. Launch is just the start of this epic journey. We have robust content plans for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that will keep players engaged and exploring the game’s beautiful and compelling world for a long time to come.”

Here is an overview of the game, via Ubisoft:

Developed by Ubisoft Quebec in association with eight other Ubisoft studios, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes players on a heroic voyage through Ancient Greece amidst one of the deadliest conflicts in history, the Peloponnesian War.

In a first for the franchise, players choose their hero, either Alexios or Kassandra, outcast Spartan mercenaries who will explore a beautiful living, systemic open world, where they will uncover the truth about their mysterious pasts and become legendary Greek heroes.

The launch of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is just the beginning; the live roadmap plan is the biggest and most ambitious in the franchise, deepening storytelling through its episodic structure. Season Pass owners will access two major storylines, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis, with three episodes each and all players will receive the free story missions, The Lost Tales of Greece, along with recurring in-game events and access to Discovery Tour.

I thought it was supposed to be down on Origins? Although if anyone knows digital numbers it would Ubi...

Yeah 26% down in physical sales from Origins in the U.K.

I can only from speculate from Ubi’s statement that it sold better physically around the world at launch than Origins and probably sold better digitally than Origins in the U.K. (UK Charts don’t count digital numbers until 2019).

We’ll get more of full indication of how well it did when the October US NPD Report comes out midway through next month as that includes digital sales as well, but for now it seems like it’s off to a great start.

First weekend UK boxed sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII are down almost 50% compared with last year's Call of Duty: WWII.

Quote

The sales are also down 59% compared with its direct predecessor, 2015's Black Ops III.

It's the weakest start for a boxed Call of Duty game since 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

These figures only include physical units, so do not factor in sales of digital downloads - which have been increasing significantly in recent years. Indeed, Activision has since revealed that Black Ops IIII is its biggest digital day one launch ever, and that on day one 'the total number of people who connected online to play Black Ops 4 increased from last year's release'.

Call of Duty Series UK Retail launch history:

These charts are becoming meaningless without the inclusion of digital sales.

Quote

In addition to setting internal records at Activision, Black Ops 4 had the strongest day one digital full game sales on the PlayStation Store in its history.

Black Ops 4 also broke the Xbox One record for best-selling digital game of all time for Activision.

US NPD charts already has them.

I thought US NPD only have access to some digital sales, not all.

Shame Disgaea 1 Complete didn't chart. Not many places seem to be stocking it, though.

It doesn't deserve to, have you seen how much they're charging for a ps2 port?

I believe it’s just Nintendo mainly that don’t give their digital figures, other JP publishers like Capcom and Sega too I believe. Most publishers do give their digital figures nowadays but some don’t include PC figures like for Origin (EA) games etc.
