Absolutely gutted :( no sequel likely, just hope digital sales on Steam/Consoles made up for it slightly.

And then there was The Evil Within 2. Despite charting in third place, there was a gulf in sales between it and Shadow of War. Worse, it sold less than a quarter of The Evil Within's 2014 physical launch total.

Nintendo Switch #1 Selling Hardware in September. Nintendo Systems = 2/3 Total sales.

Quote

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In September, the Nintendo Switch system was once again the top-selling current-generation console hardware, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. This marks the third straight month that Nintendo Switch has been No. 1, and the fifth time overall in the seven months since its launch. Nintendo Switch has already surpassed 2 million units sold in the U.S. alone, and has yet to go through its first holiday shopping season.

When combined with the Nintendo 3DS family of systems and the plug-and-play Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo systems claimed two-thirds of the month’s total video game hardware sales.

Nintendo Switch games again occupied multiple spots in the list of best-selling individual games of the month, including Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle from Ubisoft at No. 7, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at No. 10 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 11. Also, the Metroid: Samus Returns game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems debuted at No. 8.

Nintendo Switch aims to continue its momentum into the holidays, with the launches of Fire Emblem Warriors on Oct. 20, Super Mario Odyssey on Oct. 27, DOOM and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Bethesda Game Studios on Nov. 10 and Nov. 17, respectively, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Dec. 1. Additionally, Nintendo 3DS will see the arrival of Fire Emblem Warriors on Oct. 20, Mario Party: The Top 100 on Nov. 10, and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon on Nov. 17.

NPD will be issuing data from the September 2017 report later today. However, Nintendo has already come out with some information to highlight its strong performance.

In September, Switch was the top-selling current-gen hardware in the United States. It’s the third month in the row for the console and the fifth time overall in the seven months since launch. Sales for Switch are now at over two million units in the US alone.

A number of Switch games occupied multiple spots in the list of best-selling individual games of the month. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was at #7, Zelda: Breath of the Wild was at #10, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was at #11. Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS was also at #8 in its first month.

Nintendo also noted in today’s announcement that, when combined with the 3DS family of systems and the Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo systems claimed two-thirds of the month’s total video game hardware sales.

Full NPD results for September have been delayed until Monday (23rd Oct).

September 2017 NPD (US) Sales Data

Quote

Video game spending in the U.S. was up across all categories last month, according to the industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. It totaled $1.21 billion, which is up 39 percent year over year.

Here are the numbers for September 2017:

Total: $1.21 billion (up 39 percent from $872 million in September 2016)

Hardware: $316 million (up 34 percent from $235 million)

Console software: $726 million (up 52 percent from $477 million)

PC software: $18 million (down 20 percent from $22 million)

Accessories: $150 million (up 9 percent from $138 million)

A big winner was the sci-fi first-person shooter Destiny 2, which is developed by Bungie and published by Activision. It debuted on September 6 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and is slated for a PC release on October 24.

“Destiny 2 was the top-selling game in September, driving more launch month consumer spend than any other 2017 release to date,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “With one month of sales, Destiny 2 also becomes the best-selling game of 2017 year to date, and the third best-selling game of the 12-month rolling period ending September 2017, trailing only Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1.”

The NPD report doesn’t cover total market spend, as it is missing certain data (such as digital sales from Blizzard’s store on its Battle.net service). It is more of a snapshot of the market as a whole, using data from participating publishers and platforms. Psyonix, which develops the competitive cars-meet-soccer game Rocket League, is now reporting its sales data as part of the NPD report. Certain marked games only include physical sales.

Destiny 2 is now the best-selling game in 2017 and third in the charts for the best-selling titles in the last 12 months. As a result of its success, Activision Blizzard was the top publisher in September, and it’s also now the top-selling publisher in the past 12 months.

Visual Concepts’ NBA 2K18, which launched on September 19, also topped the charts for 2017. After its first month of sales, NBA 2K18 is the best-selling sports game year-to-date.

“NBA 2K18 had the largest consumer spend in launch month of any sports genre title since the current generation of consoles launched in November 2013,” said Piscatella.

Another first is Ubisoft’s Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, which launched on August 29 and became the best-selling third-party title on the Nintendo Switch.

Hardware & accessories:

Hardware spending was up last month, generating $316 million in revenue though consumers weren’t buying as many portable consoles. Sales were driven by the Nintendo Switch, SNES Classic, and PlayStation 4, which is still the best-selling console year-to-date. All together, hardware sales have grown year-to-date to $2.1 billion, which is up 20 percent as compared to 2016.

“Sony’s PlayStation 4 led all hardware platforms in consumer spend during September 2017, while Nintendo Switch sold the most units amongst the current generation consoles,” said Piscatella. “SNES Classic was the overall top unit selling hardware platform in the period.”

Just as PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles drove growth for hardware, so did their controllers in the accessories category. The DualShock 4 Wireless Controller Black for the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling accessory last month, while the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is the top-selling accessory year-to-date.

Accessories and PC game cards, which NPD is now tracking starting with the September report, were up 9 percent last month year-to-date and generated $150 million.

Creed sales are quite bad, as are Wolfensteins.

Creed is performing as well as Syndicate, the second worst selling Creed ever and Wolf has had less than half of the firsts launch sales. Ouch

Those two statements are correct, but I'm going to add some clarifications as they both sound worse than they actually are.

Origins did indeed sell as well a Syndicate (which in itself was one of the worst selling AC's) that much is correct, but when you figure in the rise of digital sales (charts only include physical) Origins sold WAY better than Syndicate.

Also, with Wolfenstein 2, again, it did indeed sell less than half of Wolf:TNO's sale, but Wolf TNO launched on a Tuesday, Wolf 2 on a Friday so it's not a like-for-like comparison.

No no one gives out digital figures. I’d be surprised if assassins creed sold all that much more significantly digitally because the price of digital is so much higher. I think they’d like you to believe digital sales are stronger than they are.

Digital Sales are HUGE now, been rising steadily the last few years, whilst in the EU games cost more than the US they certainly still sell a greater percentage than they used to, you definitely shouldn't write them off, I'm sure Origins sold a massive amount digitally with all the Ubi store 20% discount and various Editions offered.

A couple of quotes:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-04-19-digital-sales-now-represent-74-percent-of-the-us-game-market

Quote

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) today released its annual report, Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry, shedding light on the continued growth of games in the US. While physical format sales are steadily declining, the total picture for the US games industry is actually quite positive, with overall sales climbing each year since 2010, when the industry totaled $17.5 billion. In 2016, the total spend on games content was $24.5 billion and if you factor in hardware, accessories and VR, that figure rises to $30.4 billion. Digital has been accounting for a bigger and bigger portion of the sales total each year, and in 2016 that portion was 74%, including full game digital downloads, subscriptions, DLC, mobile and social.

The flourishing games business has contributed over $11.7 billion to the US GDP last year, and the ESA notes that there are over 65,000 employees at game companies across the nation currently, with the average compensation in 2016 being $97,000. All told, there are 2,322 developer locations across all 50 states with 526 publisher locations across 44 states.

http://business.financialpost.com/technology/gaming/digital-sales-to-account-for-nearly-93-of-all-game-sales-by-2021-report

Quote

The global digital game market is set to grow from €48.1 billion (CAD$71 billion) in 2017 to €73.1 (CAD$108 billion) in 2021, according to new projections issued by European digital industry observer IDATE DigiWorld Research. What’s more, digital sales will account for nearly 93 per cent of all game sales within four years.

The Montpellier, France-based firm’s newly released data forecasts the quickest growth of digital revenue in the home console market, climbing from €6.2 billion this year to €12.2 billion in 2021. This shouldn’t be surprising, given Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s collective push to make more content – both full games and add-ons – available within their respective digital stores.

67.5 Million PS4 Shipped by September 30th; Prediction by March 2018 Raised to 79 Million

Quote

Today, Sony Corporation released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2017, which relates to the period between July 1st and September 30th.

As usual, we get an update on PS4 shipments. Sony Interactive Entertainment sent to retailers 4.2 million units during the quarter, which brings the total to 67.5 million units shipped in the console’s lifetime.

A specific breakdown was also provided for the results of the Game & Network Services segment, which is basically PlayStation and PlayStation Network combined.

We see an increase across the board for both revenue and operating income thanks to PS4 software, hardware, and PlayStation Network sales.

Sales increased 35.4% year-on-year (a 25% increase on a constant currency basis) to 433.2 billion yen. This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PlayStation®4 (“PS4”) software sales including sales through the network, the impact of foreign exchange rates, as well as an increase in PS4 hardware sales.

Operating income increased 35.8 billion yen year-on-year to 54.8 billion yen. This significant increase was primarily due to the above-mentioned increase in sales, partially offset by an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses. During the current quarter, there was a 3.1 billion yen positive impact from foreign exchange rate fluctuations.

Operating income includes a favorable adjustment of 5.1 billion yen that resulted from the recognition of internal royalties in the current quarter, rather than in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. This adjustment resulted from a discrepancy in the timing of when internal royalties were recognized at the relevant subsidiaries within the segment.

As for Sony as a whole, all the figures are in the black, and we also read an explanation for the quarterly performance. The Game business is indicated as a primary factor of a significant improvement year-on-year in both sales and operating income.

Sales and operating revenue (“Sales”) increased by 22.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year (“year-on-year”) to 2,062.5 billion yen. This significant increase was primarily due to the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in Game & Network Services (“G&NS”) segment sales. On a constant currency basis, sales increased 15%. For further details about the impact of foreign exchange rate fluctuations on sales and operating income (loss), see Note on page 8.

Operating income increased 158.5 billion yen year-on-year to 204.2 billion yen. This significant increase was mainly due to the improvements of operating results in the Semiconductors and G&NS segments as well as All Other.

Operating income in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year included 9.4 billion yen in inventory write-downs of certain image sensors for mobile products and net charges of 1.2 billion yen in expenses resulting from the earthquakes in the Kumamoto region in 2016 (“the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes”), both recorded in the Semiconductors segment, and a 32.8 billion yen impairment charge related to the transfer of the battery business recorded in All Other.

During the current quarter, restructuring charges, net, decreased 31.0 billion yen year-on-year to 1.6 billion yen mainly due to the absence in the current quarter of the above-mentioned impairment charge related to the transfer of the battery  business recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Restructuring charges are recorded as an operating  expense and are included in operating income.

Last, but not least, the press release included the forecast for the full fiscal year 2017. The company predicts to sell 19 million PS4 units before March 31st, 2017, which would bring the grand total to 69 million.

The full-year outlook for the Game & Network segment was increased for sales compared to the one disclosed in August, but was left untouched for operating income. It’s worth mentioning that if Sony Interactive Entertainment manages to achieve the forecasted figures, it’ll mark a very sharp improvement compared to the past fiscal year.

Activision: Destiny's sales are over 50% digital, ahead of Destiny 1 after PC launch

Quote

Launched in September, Destiny 2 is the best-selling console game year-to-date in the U.S.2 Digital mix was over 50% of console full game sell-through, a new record for the company. In October, we introduced the Destiny franchise to PC gamers on Blizzard's Battle.net® platform, opening the franchise to new global audiences and future growth opportunities.

Activision and Bungie's Destiny 2 is well ahead of the highly engaging original Destiny on time spent per player and attach rate to the Expansion Pass.

With the launch of the game on PC, Destiny 2 is now ahead of the original game in consumer spend.

CoD:WWII sells $500m in 3 days. Most sold game ever on PSN.

Quote

Activision announced that Call of Duty: WWII sales have surpassed over $500 million during the first three days of launch, beating out highly anticipated Thor: Raganork and Wonder Women’s opening weekend sales.

Activision also announced that Call of Duty: WWII set a new record on the PS4 Store: Call of Duty: WWII is the best-selling digital full game by units sold on its first day of availability on PS4 store ever. Activision has also stated that Call of Duty: WWII has sold more than 2 times the amount of copies at launch compared to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s launch last year.

Call of Duty: WWII launch has resulted in the “highest total connected users on current generation consoles and PC in Call of Duty history,” Activision says.

Activision CEO says that the teams at SHG are committed to supporting the community with ‘continuous improvements and new content.’

“We challenged our players to get their squads back together and they answered the call, with the highest number of players we’ve ever seen on current gen consoles and PC,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision.

“Call of Duty: WWII returns the franchise to its roots and the results are incredible, selling twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year, and setting the day one record for full-game downloads on PlayStation 4.

Our $500 million opening weekend was not only bigger than Thor: Ragnarok’s, it was bigger than the opening weekends of both Thor and Wonder Woman combined. And we’re committed to supporting the community with continuous improvements and new content.”
