DisturbedSwan
So yeah, I imagine this thread will bore quite a few of y'all but I love seeing the new sales charts every week/month that come out, and how certain games and consoles did sales-wise in that particular week/month. This thread will mostly deal with the UK & US sales charts, possibly the Japanese from time-to-time after a big game releases over there or something. UKIE publishes the UK video game charts every week, the NPD Group in the US publishes console and games charts every month. So without further ado: June 2017 NPD (US) Sales: Quote June game sales are up 7% year over year. Hardware was up 27% year over year. Console and Handheld game sales were up 1% year over year. Physical and Steam PC software sales (for AAA games from participating publishers) were up 2% year over year. Software: Tekken 7 Injustice 2 Grand Theft Auto V Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy Arms* - 256,000 physically plus digitally The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* - 145,000 physically plus digitally (keep in mind the chart is by revenue, and that the rankings exclude digital so presumably Mario Kart at 180K was on sale somewhere or had major digital sales) Mario Kart 8* - 180,000 physically plus digitally Overwatch** NBA 2K17 Horizon Zero Dawn Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands Call of Duty: Black Ops III MLB 17: The Show Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Battlefield 1 Minecraft The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind* FIFA 17 Forza Horizon 3 2017 Best Sellers: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* For Honor Grand Theft Auto V Horizon Zero Dawn Injustice 2 Mass Effect: Andromeda Resident Evil 7: Biohazard NBA 2K17 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Best Sellers Past 12 Months: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Battlefield 1 NBA 2K17 Madden NFL 17 Grand Theft Auto V FIFA 17 Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands Final Fantasy XV The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* Overwatch Notes: - “Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy had a strong debut, reaching number 4 on the month’s top-seller chart despite having only two days in market,” said Piscatella. “Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy is the first Crash Bandicoot franchise game to debut in the top 5 since Crash Bandicoot: Warped, which launched on the Sony PlayStation in November 1998.” - The other exclusive was Arms for the Switch. What’s especially impressive here is that it sold that well without including any digital sales. Nintendo separately confirmed that its wacky fighter surpassed 256,000 copies sold physically and digitally in June. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 180,000 and 145,000 during that same period, respectively. - "It’s worth noting that Prey, which debuted in May, has completely fallen off the sales charts. That’s not just the overall sales chart, it didn’t even crack the top 10 on Xbox One- or PS4-only lists, which you can see below." Hardware: PS4: #1 Notes: - The PlayStation 4 was June’s best-selling hardware platform, driven by the Slim PlayStation 4 system in Gold with 1TB HDD,” said Piscatella. “It was the best performing June for PlayStation 4 unit sales to date.” - “Year to date, hardware spending has grown 19 percent versus 2016 to $1.4 billion,” said Piscatella. “The Nintendo Switch has been the catalyst for year-to-date growth. But portable hardware spending continues to decline. Year-to-date, spending on portable hardware has fallen 40 percent.” Individual Format Charts: Xbox One: Injustice 2 Grand Theft Auto V Tekken 7 Overwatch** Forza Horizon 3 Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands Call of Duty: Black Ops III NBA 2K17 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare PlayStation 4: Crash Bandicoot: N. DisturbedSwan
More info from Lakitu's article: Nintendo 1st Quarter Results FY3/2018: Arms 1.18M, Mario Kart 3.54M, Zelda 3.92M Quote 1. Consolidated Operating Results During the first quarter of this period (April through June 2017), for Nintendo Switch, we released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in April to favorable response, selling 3.54 million units worldwide. ARMS, released in June, is also off to a good start with 1.18 million units sold globally. In addition, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in the previous period, has also continued to perform well, selling 1.16 million units worldwide (3.92 million units on a cumulative basis). Altogether the sales volume for Nintendo Switch hardware and software during this period came to 1.97 million units and 8.14 million units respectively. For Nintendo 3DS, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was released in Japan in April and overseas in May and has been a popular title. Hardware sales were 0.95 million units (1% increase on a year-on-year basis) and software sales were 5.85 million units (31% decrease on a year-on-year basis). As there were few new types of amiibo compared to the same period last year and few new titles offering amiibo functionality, amiibo sales were approximately 1.60 million units for figure-type and approximately 1.30 million units for card-type. In our digital business, sales of the digital versions of packaged software and downloadable content on Nintendo Switch showed steady growth, with total digital sales of 11.0 billion yen (41% increase on a year-on-year basis). For smart devices, many consumers are continuing to enjoy Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes, which were released during the previous fiscal year. Our smart device and IP related income was 9.0 billion yen (450% increase on a year-on-year basis). With this background, we had an operating profit of 16.2 billion yen and an ordinary profit of 30.9 billion yen against net sales of 154.0 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 113.8 billion yen or 73.9% of the total sales). The profit attributable to owners of parent for this quarter was 21.2 billion yen. Quote Net Sales: ¥154,069 million ($1.38 billion), 148.6% increase YoY Operating Income: ¥16,208 million ($145 million) Profit: ¥21,260 million ($190 million) Nintendo Switch Hardware: 1.97 million for the quarter/ 4.7 million LTD Software: 8.14 million for the quarter/ 13.6 million LTD 3DS Hardware: 950k for the quarter/ 67.08 million LTD Software: 5.85 million for the quarter/ 355.1 million LTD Smart Device, IP related income: ¥9,062 million Nintendo's earnings share from Pokémon Go: (Share of profit of entities accounted for using equity method:) ¥3,286 million

DisturbedSwan
PS4 shipments reach 63.3 million total Quote In their financial report for Q1 Fiscal Year 2017 (ended June 30, 2017), Sony revealed that 3.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles were shipped during the three-month period (down from 3.5 million in Q1 FY16), bringing the lifetime total to 63.3 million. Game & Network Services sales were up 5.4% year-on-year to 348.1 billion yen ($3.16 billion), which Sony says is thanks to an increase in PS4 software sales, as well as the “contribution” of PlayStation VR, but it was partially offset by the September 2016 PS4 price drop. While sales were up, Operating Income fell by 59.7% to 17.7 billion yen, “primarily due to the absence of the significant contribution from Uncharted 4,” as well as that PS4 price drop. Sony adds that Network Revenue rose 34% year-on-year. Last we heard, the number of PS4s sold through to consumers was 60.4 million. For this current fiscal year, Sony expects to ship 18 million PS4s, down from 20 million in the previous fiscal year.

Console and Handheld game sales were up 17% year over year. Physical and Steam PC software sales (for AAA games from participating publishers) were up 14% year over year. Software: To note, these charts are by revenue. July 2017: Splatoon 2* Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy drove software gains" - “Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 was the best-selling title of the month,” said Piscatella. “Three of the month’s top seven best-selling games are published by Nintendo. Nintendo was also the best-selling software publisher in July.” - In June, Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 fought their way to the top of charts. Since then, Tekken 7 has cratered from its No. 1 position to No. 20. Injustice 2 is still in the top 10 - Though Horizon Zero Dawn has slipped off the overall charts, Piscatella says that it contributed to a resurgence of role-playing games. Along with titles like Nier: Automata, Persona 5, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, the RPG year-to-date sales have grown over 50 percent year-over-year. Hardware: Nintendo Switch: #1 Notes: - “The Nintendo Switch was July’s best-selling hardware platform,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “[That was] driven by new inventory released in support of the launch of Splatoon 2.” - "New supply of Nintendo Switch and continued strength of PlayStation 4 pushed hardware higher." - “Year to date, hardware spending has grown 20 percent versus 2016 to $1.6 billion,” Mat Piscatella said. “Performance of the Nintendo Switch continues to be the primary cause of the year-on-year gains.” - Of course, none of this means folks have forgot about the PS4. That system doesn’t have supply problems, and Sony has built up an impressive lineup of games for it this year. That has led to it outselling all other hardware platforms year-to-date, according to Piscatella. DANGERMAN
I wasn't going to post it because 1. it's me and people will think I'm doing it because I HATE Destiny and I don't and 2. ultimately, who cares. But apparently Destiny 2 has been disappointing (relative) in the UK sales wise http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2017-09-11-destiny-2-is-uks-biggest-launch-of-2017-but-falls-well-short-of-original Quote Destiny 2 is the biggest launch of the year so far, but its first week sales are almost 58% down compared with the original. It is the latest major sequel on this console generation that has struggled to live up to its predecessor, following in the footsteps of Watch Dogs 2 and Titanfall 2. However, it's important to note that digital is taking an every bigger slice of the console market, and this data does not include digital figures. Furthermore, the original Destiny was also release on the PS3 and Xbox 360, whereas the sequel has not been. The reason I think it's interesting is that Activision had previously come out and said Destiny 2 preorders had surpassed those for the first game. While it's true digital sales, plus the delayed PC release will make up some of the gap, I'm not sure those sales will take it above the original game. Here's my thinking; Destiny came out at a point where this generation hadn't really got going. It was the first game that felt next-gen to me, it was the hype for the machines, and there wasn't a lot of competition, this is back when the likes of Thief and Sleeping Dogs getting ports was noteworthy. That meant people like me, people looking for something to play, picked it up and gave it a go. I won't write up everything that was wrong with Destiny, but suffice to say a lot of people who played the original won't come back for the sequel even though it's reportedly a better game (not that the original reviewed badly either so make of that what you will (and that actually brings me to another point in a couple of lines)). Look at the other 2 games mentioned in the quote, Watch_Underscore_Dogs and Titanfall were 2 other hugely hyped games that got attention and hype thanks to a barren release list and marketing spend, both failed to live up to expectations, and both had superior sequels that didn't sell as well as they should While people like me might have bounced off Destiny there's no denying there's people who love it. This leads to a three-fold situation where, despite these reported low sales, you've got high preorder numbers thanks to die-hard fans, a whopping 1.2 million concurrent players, and really good reviews, possibly because (like a lot of sequels) it's got a skewed audience Anyway, I thought this was interesting, to a point at least, it's an interesting case study at least. Destiny 2 isn't going to bomb, and it's not going to disappear from the media. It might even entice some players back over the next 6 months, I guess the problem it's got there is the structure means you're inevitably hindering late comers
HandsomeDead
Yeah I totally agree, I'm not surprised it isn't selling as well. A lot of people had issues with the first who were willing to give it a try (even though they were kind of lost on me). And I feel there was a lot less hype around this sequel compared to the original. I'm actually of the opinion that it isn't that much better than the original. The gameplay loop was always strong to me, stronger than most games in the same genre and just sitting it in a slightly improved context isn't all that exciting. I also find the story really formulaic and the tone in writing (both in the story and in general play) far too obnoxiously self aware (more so than I predicted it would be). So while I like the improvements in some areas I'm frustrated at the criticisms Destiny got because it has resulted in it changing in areas it shouldn't have, but Bungie are as to blame for that as well for not sticking to the original vision. Really Destiny 2 feels like an apology, and some of which they never needed to apologise for. But anyway I'm glad it seems to be doing well enough and being far from a flop. ThreeFour
I think quite a few have bought digital going by the chatter in the community and a few are waiting in PC, but I think they expected a hit from Destiny post release reception. Two fold; people didn't get what it was, you could tell this instantly by anyone saying they finished the story and left it. No one does the story on something like Diablo and leaves it. Well, you shouldn't. But anyway. And secondly it just wasn't put together well. The story was weak with poorly written lines and just not told very well. The 'grind' early on was rough and duversity in gear was a letdown with everyone looking the same if they wanted to be max level. The DLC was overpriced, felt like it was ripped out of the main game, and offered little. Over the course of the last few years they've slowly got it together. It's pretty much unanimous this is a better game. More distinguished differences between classes, gear variety, more things to do and a story, that even though it's still hit and miss, is over and above the first one. I actually liked it more than the last Halo I played (four I think). It's early yet tho. The raids only just been released, Trials tonight, any prestige modes. Still yet to see if any mini events/DLC happen in-between major content drops. Yet to see if those major content drops are worth it. Time will reveal whether it's worth getting back into. Those that enjoyed Destiny love the sequel tho.
