radiofloyd
I picked up Owlboy when it came out before Christmas and even started it, but I never went back to it a second time. Today I booted it up again and started over from the beginning. I've played the opening 40 minutes or so. In many ways Owlboy reminds me of Child of Light - the music and colourful graphics create a similar kind of atmosphere and in this game you also fly around the map. The opening portion of the game is a mixture of flying around the beautiful home village and then playing through a more confined cave area which involves a small amount of combat (the owl himself is not very combat adept but he can pick up and carry his companion who can shoot a gun). I played as far as leaving the home village.
radiofloyd
Over three hours now. Although this game doesn't have any rpg elements it reminds me of games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. With a heavy dose of Cave Story. It's been quite story heavy so far which is good. It's basically a shoot 'me up in a Zelda/Fez type environment. There are mini-bosses and bosses quite regularly but none of them are very difficult, although that's not to say the game is simple. I think the difficulty is reasonably pitched to keep the game engaging. After a bit of a slow start (I wasn't sure what kind of game Owlboy was really) I'm liking this a lot now. radiofloyd
7.5 hours in now, yeah this game doesn't feel like a snes rpg anymore. So far it's sitting on about a 7/10 for me. The game is getting gradually less fun as it goes along, and it isn't anywhere near as tranquil or idyllic as that first screenshot might suggest... radiofloyd
It took me a fucking lot of tries but I'm a persevering bugger. Beat the cannon minigame. I challenge those of you who pick up this game to try this...

radiofloyd
Finished it, after 13 hours. I'm going to have to be harsh on this game and say it's either a 6 or 7 for me. After I finished it I re-read six or seven reviews of the game which for the most part lavished praise on it and I have to wonder what they were smoking. Some reviews go to town praising the story and characters in the game - yes, the game is very story-focused (especially the early few hours where like I said, the game felt a bit like Chrono Trigger meets Cave Story), but in the end the story is quite minimal and not very interesting. The main problem is the "dungeon" sections get progressively longer as the game goes on, this is where you'll be doing a lot of combat and boring interactions with the environment. The bosses are uniformly awful. The game has imprecise controls which you will constantly be battling against (if for no other reason than they are unique to this game). I cannot stress enough how tedious most of the later sections of this game are to play. Yeah I probably didn't like this game for at least half the length of time I played it. Special shout out to the awful achievements. I finished the game with 2/12 achievements and the game does not have an achievement for finishing the game. Shame because I though I would love this game. Those opening moments where you first fly around Vellie really give you the wrong impression of the game.
