Just lots of chilling with the gang and conversations today, furthered a few S-Links, did the exams, levelled up a few stats and I eventually got into the very beginning of the 4th dungeon.

Spoiler

Kowakami's S-Link conversation took a really dark turn when you discover some guy she was tutoring at another school got run over by a car, and his Guardians blame her for it as she was tutoring him on the side along with him also having a part-time job and was therefore overworked.

Properly dark and she was really cut up about it, think she has been the most surprising Confidant so far really, didn't even recognise her as the Maid when you first see her, and it is very funny and High School hi-jinx when you first discover she's your teacher. As you get to know her and find out how vulnerable she is and how hard she works, along with the whole feeling responsible for a past students death and being blackmailed by his Guardians thing.

Just so much depth to that whole S-Link, I like how almost every character in this game feels like a real person too, everyone has their own insecurities and some kind of dark secret from their past.

The whole setup behind the 4th dungeon is fantastic too, reminded me of 4 much more in that you have to heal a future-party members heart, it's cool approaching the whole heist/dungeon stuff from a different angle, where she doesn't see you as an enemy but still wants you to heal her heart so she doesn't blame herself for her Mother's death anymore.

Just finding out Sojiro has a (kind-of) daughter he cares for too was a huge revelation and I loved the bit where they make their way through his house in the dark and everyone shits themselves

Lots of good stuff today, the more I play the better it gets, definitely feels like it's getting to live up to the heady heights of 4 now for me.

Playing through this has made me want to go back and play Persona 3 at some point too, £8 on PSN, got my PS3 downstairs I can hook up and play it easily, will be very tempting over the Summer, although I also earmarked Kingdom Hearts Remix for the same time period.

Another 4 hours earlier, 44.5 total.

Spent the entirety of my session in the 4th dungeon, made it up to discovering a route to the Treasure and will pick it up again tomorrow.

The design of this dungeon has really astounded me I have to say, in a lot of regards it's much closer to a traditional Zelda dungeon than anything seen in this game and previous Persona's before, it feels much smaller than the previous dungeons, less sprawling and more methodical and direct in its approach, TONS of puzzles in here, there'd been a few in the first 3 dungeons but there are literally puzzle room after puzzle room in this Dungeon, having to find Gems to open hidden paths, secret buttons found in sarcophagi, traps all over the place, felt quite Indiana Jones at times too, really dug it.

Spoiler

As mentioned previously the antagonist of the dungeon feels very similar to Persona 4, she's someone that feels very close to you, someone that you NEED in order to progress in the game and someone who has such an incredibly dark past and deep-seated repressed horrific memories that you really want to help. Some of the Egyptian picture puzzles where you find out scenes from when her Mum died, how she felt and the voices she hears, it's incredibly dark and I really felt for her deep down and SO badly wanted to help her out.

So yeah, really enjoyed it, the variety in the dungeons in the game is incredibly impressive, they feel so varied and distinct I have no idea what to expect at all for the next one. I do wonder if a lot of the development time was spend designing the dungeons as they are so incredibly well designed, hope Nintendo looks at these as a Template for the next Zelda, they could learn a thing or two.

"Now hold on," you say. "Persona 5 reads fine to me!"

Sure, it's no Zero Wing. Let's agree that it's "fine." But is "fine" the standard we should accept from the Atlus USA?

That made me laugh. Acceptable is not acceptable! The first example they come up with is a bit tenuous, too: “it can't be helped”. That's pretty common in English to me.

There are a couple of legit clunky translations show in the article/screenshots, but nothing has really stuck out as bad in my play so far.

Played about 7 hours over the weekend since my last post, 52.5 total.

Finished off the 4th dungeon, really enjoyed it and the whole ending of it was completely different than what I expected, and to any of the other dungeons that proceeded it, definitely feels the most unique out of them all, much more personal and moving too.

After this I just went back to doing the social roleplay stuff, managed to max out 2 S-Links with Ann and Yoshida which were both pretty cool,

Spoiler

really like Futaba too, how you have to train her up gradually to be less anxious in the world which culminates in a (typically pervy) beach day trip segment where you see all the ladies in their Bikini's and of course Ryuji makes the typical eyes-popping-out-of-head anime face at Ann when she appears

The plot definitely seems to be gathering pace now too, you've had the mystery of the other metaverse user for a while now, but with the whole story thread that Futaba's mother was possibly murdered for researching this pseudo science (I.E. Metaverse) is incredibly intruiging, definitely feels the plot has got a bit more serious now with the Phantom Thieves having a chance to stop the atrocities that have been happening rather than finding random targets to just further their fame.

So yeah, just about to start investigating a 5th target.

Not too much to tell in all honesty, carried on the social side of things, hit a few road bumps along the way as some of the S-Links now require you to have a certain level of Kindness/Guts/Proficiency/Charm/Knowledge to progress and I just haven't had the level required, took me AGES to get up to the Guts level required just to talk to the model shop owner and I had to get my Proficiency up to Masterful to be able to carry on with Yusuke's S-Link and have been trying to get my Kindness up to carry on with Futuba's too, it a bit frustrating as I want to carry on with it but keep hitting my head against the wall.

Had a quick look to see how far I was in the game (even though P4G was meant to be 100+ hours I managed to clock it in 60) and apparently I'm 'almost half-way/half-way through' :o so got plenty more to play, still taking my time with it and savouring every moment, would've liked to of got it finished to play Horizon/Outlast/Nier/Yooka-Laylee, but they'll have to wait.

Morning all.

I've deleted a few posts just so things hopefully get back on track. There was a point made about splitting hairs, I think that's a fair point, some things can just be let go. Just an observation, I'm sure I'm as guilty as anyone for doing it

Spoiler

Another school trip, this time to Hawaii, which was nicely done, wasn't anything particularly amazing but it was a nice moment with some cool anime cutscenes book-ending the segment, just seeing all the gang in a new setting, one which doesn't speak their native language (and having Hawaiians come up to them with broken Japanese trying to get them to come into their stores to buy some tat) was great to see and different from the now familiar Tokyo locales.

After you get back things ramp up as you learn more and more about your new target, which leads you to meeting a new Party member (Haru Okumura) which happens to be the daughter of the target, who also happens to go to the same school...but you've somehow had no knowledge of up until now....yeah this one was a bit of a stretch. Have to say I took an almost immediate dislike to this girl because of her voice, it's just so incredibly squeaky and annoying to listen to.

Mona get's the 'ump and runs off with Miku, you have to chase them both in the Metaverse, after Mona gets beat around a bit by Miku's fiance (who's an asshat...what a surprise) he calls for help, you help him (and Miku) and reconcile.

This commences the run to the 5th dungeon, which is a Spaceport this time around. Another really great locale, really unique and a visual feast for the eyes, has such a different feel to it from a lot of the other dungeons with it being Sci-Fi based and all.

They're now giving me 28 days to finish a dungeon so TONS more S-Links and teenage Hijinx ensued, maxed my Charm stat now (and can't be far off in a few others) and Kowakami's S-Link, which is fucking amazing, you choose the romance options and you hook up with your bloody teacher! Fucking love this game hahaha, as a result of maxing this S-Link as well you get a special massage (I.E. Sexy time/Happy ending) from her that let's you go out at night after exploring the Metaverse, which will come in MIGHTILY handy I think.

Back in the dungeon properly after a while of messing about, Miku predictably stands up to her cunt of a father in the Metaverse and then you begin your quest for the treasure, and I left it there.

Finished!

At the start i was enjoying it but with lingering thoughts that it's not as good as 4. Ended up really really enjoying it, it's a great game, probably still slightly prefer 4, but in many ways 5 is better, for me anyway, the dungeons are much better, more interesting and with some nice puzzles. The game kept my interest better too, the better dungeons, better combat, story seems better paced, took me about 145 hours and i barely felt any of it dragged on. Really liked the phantom thieves story and grew to like some of the social links that i didn't think we're that great earlier on. The story really ramps up and is great at a certain point, then can't quite maintain this towards the end, but it's still good. Unfortunately i saw some ending spoilers but it didn't detract too much. The music and graphics style are great, one song in particular near the end i thought was brilliant.

Wow @spatular 145 seems quite a lot more than the 80-120 hours most Journo's tend to spend with it. Did you spend some time maxxing out S-Links in NG+ or grinding etc.?

Without spoiling anything, I'm just about to go for the treasure in the 5th dungeon, how many hours have I got left?

Another 10 hours since my last post, 73 total.

Spoiler

I enjoyed the 5th dungeon but I did feel it was kind of short? Fantastic design-wise and incredibly unique, a HUGE puzzle focus again, maybe even more puzzle-centric than the 4th, including some Portal esque gravity-tube/switch rooms which were a great addition. There's always a lot of variety on offer and each one of the dungeons feels incredibly unique, personal and fresh, I know I've said this previously but you really don't know what you're going to get, could've done with this one being a little longer though, although with the way the Plot twists after this I'm thinking it was possibly intentional that it was that straightforward to small compared to others? Who knows.

The most interesting thing that happens is the twist after where you discover you've been setup by the 'real culprit' of the cognition murders that have been happening around Tokyo, as Okumura takes to the stage in a press conference after you've taken his heart, he suffers one of these cognitive heart-attack things and dies, and of course the general public all blame the Phantom Thieves for it, which sees your popularity dwindle before your very eyes. It also shows that you were setup for the 4th dungeon too, as the 'real medjed' didn't send you the ultimatum at all, it was copy and pasted there by another unknown culprit.

So yeah, very cool stuff, very interesting how they hype you up so much, feel on top of the world after doing the 4th dungeon and then send you right back to obscurity and criminality. It really seems to resonate, you could feel the hype and excitement after finishing Futaba's dungeon and now the game somehow makes you feel as worried and anxious as the characters, it's quite remarkable.

The culprit is pretty obvious at this point though (I think), if it is who I think it is (Shido, the Politician) then the finale could be a bit of an anti-climax, hoping it's just a red herring to throw you off the scent.

Not an awful lot happened since really, spent most of it dossing about, levelling up stats and S-Links, made quite a dent in them recently after hours and hours of in S-Link purgatory it's damn satisfying to see all these characters you put time into rank up to their max level, as far as my Stats go I've got all at Max except for Guts which is at Level 4, so that should get to max soon hopefully.

Spoiler

The plot progresses with Akechi now joining the team (well forcing his way onto the team by blackmailing you), and then you enter Sae's dungeon to scope it out, the most interesting part of this is that it's the Casino Palace shown at the very start of the game, so I have a feeling the two 'timelines' will connect after I finish this and we'll go back to 'present' day to (presumably) fight Shido and/or his accomplices.

So yeah, will pick it up from there tomorrow, definitely feeling like the game may be coming to an end soon, but who knows.

Spent the majority of my time in the 6th dungeon today, worked my way through up to a road-block, then went back in the next day to open a path to the treasure.

Spoiler

Another really varied, unique experience, as I touched on before this Dungeon is set in a Casino, and in a Casino of course there'll be gambling right? The game knows this and makes you accumulate coins to get past certain obstacles in your path, making you do little challenges. These range from having to fight a variety of battles in an arena, making your way through a dark maze and finding the correct colour terminals so you can rig a slot machine.

I think out of all of them this Dungeon is the most that doesn't really feel like one if that makes sense. Only the shadows really give it away as there's people milling about normally, gambling as they would in the real world all over the shop with all the traditional gambling machines and tables you'd expect to see, the others felt like very other-worldly locales, especially the spaceport but this one feels much more grounded and more human, more of a holiday location vibe to the place.

There's still plenty of coridoors to get lost in and a lot of the staples that have marked the dungeons up to this point are still there such as finding keycards, ambushing enemies and breaking vases to get loot but this is the only one you can forget you're in a Palace in the Metaverse really and I think that's incredibly cool.

So that was pretty much all I had time for, should easily finish off the 5th dungeon tomorrow and then move onto more S-Link shenanigans after I'd imagine.

Well, shit has well and truly hit the fan.

Finished off the 6th dungeon,

Spoiler

then saw the opening cutscene with the Casino escape and interrogation afterwards all over again, now with new context. Answered all of Sae's questions in the interrogation room and then Akechi appeared, shot the guard and shot me in the face, I was like WTF?! Went to the Velvet Room and it told me I'd failed, then the credits started rolling...only after this I realised I'd got the bad ending, no idea any of the choices Sae gave me would come back to bite me in the arse, guess I shouldn't of been so honest and ratted out the rest of my crew, so that was my downfall.

Reloaded the save and redid it over again, this time refusing to answer any questions about who my crew were, and progressed as expected this time around. Things after this go properly Ocean's 11 with you knowing beforehand about Akechi's betrayal and setting it up so that he only kills your clone in the Metaverse (in a segment of Sae's Palace) rather than in real life. Of course he doesn't notice the difference and just goes about his day after this like everything is fine and he frames you for suicide like he planned from the beginning.

Properly crazy shit, the second time I watched the opening Casino cutscene I had an inkling that it was Akechi that betrayed us, but it was still a shock seeing him shoot you in the head in cold blood like that, the scene is properly brutal too with blood gushing all over the shop.

After you get out, you have to predictably lie low for a while, now you have an idea who the culprit to all of the memory seizures is, Shido, the guy I always thought it would be since running into him in the Buffet lift right after the 1st Palace is finished, what a surprise :( kind of disappointed really, the Akechi twist was great but was hoping the villain wasn't as predictable and obvious.

So after TONS of exposition (2.5 HOURS worth) you finally enter infiltrate and investigate the 6th Palace, made my way to the first road block and called it a day there.

Definitely feels like I'm very close to the end, not sure if this is the final dungeon or not (I kind of expected there'd be 7) but things definitely feel like they are heading towards the conclusion now, the game has given me lots of hints to sum the S-Link stuff up and make sure I'm ready for the final battle etc. so it definitely looks likely.

4 hours, 84 total.

It pains me to say this, but I've kind of hit a wall with it over the last 2 days.

Yesterday wasn't quite as bad but today I just couldn't be arsed with it at all, I just don't care about the characters all that much, Becky, Morgana, Futaba, Sojiro, Makoto and Ryuji are great but apart from that I couldn't give two shits about them, the tertiary S-Links as well (many of which I've now maxed out) all pretty much end the same way and don't really offer anything meaningful to the game apart from upping your Death/Fortune etc. arcana. I even skipped some of the S-Link dialogue today, I just couldn't be arsed at all, completely switched off.

Spoiler

Things did get better when I got into the 7th dungeon. It's got a really Zero Escape vibe to it as it's set on a humongous cruise ship, with you having to navigate through the halls and constantly battling against this mouse/human puzzle where you have to sneak behind and unlock doors to progress and eventually get to the lift at the end of the floor.

Another really unique vibe to it and meeting all the targets you have to get invitations from (in order to get through Shido's barrier in the Foyer) are really well done with cutesy little cutscenes, loved Makoto acting all grown up and ordering the Foie Gras in the Restaurant and Ann pretending she's a member of the British Royal Family in order to convince a Noble to let her have an invitation

I'd say I'm about 2/3 into the 7th dungeon so will pick up where I left off tomorrow and hopefully reach the treasure, just hoping it doesn't go on much longer otherwise I my thoughts on it as a whole might sour even more.

Finished this in the small hours of yesterday morning, took me 92 hours in total.

Spoiler

Finished off the 7th Dungeon, eventually taking Shido's heart after a few hiccups, was fully expecting the credits to roll after I'd defeated him and a celebration scene played but it didn't happen and the Thieves' popularity wasn't going on for some reason so I knew something was awry. Really liked this dungeon again, the design was fantastic, definitely more combat-centric than some, but I didn't really mind that, as mentioned previously it really reminded me of the Zero Time Dilemma series due to the setting.

The cutscene of the 'calling card' for Shido is one of the coolest, sassiest things I've seen in, all done in an anime short, and basically shows the Phantom Thieves outlines, takes the piss out of Shido on TV's/phones etc. all over the country, felt damn good to humiliate him like that after all he's put you through throughout the game.

Turns out the whole of the general public's cognition had been corrupted and enslaved in mementos, so you have to go in there, kill the 'heart' of mementos in order to restore order to the world. Luckily I'd already explored mementos quite a bit (managed to do all the requests there) so I managed to fast travel right to the bottom of the area and begin the 'dungeon' proper down here. It features a relatively simple puzzle that gets harder as it goes on, much like a lot of the other dungeons' designs, this one wasn't that great visually though, the theme was just that kind of generic distorted world similar to mementos proper and I found it incredibly dull compared to all the other dungeons unique and colourful designs.

So you go down here, defeat the holy grail (which turns out to be Igor...but not actually Igor but some malevolent God who took Igor's place and duped you the whole game) in a really gradiose Platinum/FFXV kind of way, and things go even CRAZIER after this when the cognitive world fades in with the real world, the Holy Grail (bad Igor) turns into some huge flying angel god thing and spouts a million arms, then you have to batter him and put him to bed for good. All incredibly bombastic and crazy, the world is on the line and it feels very end of FFXV in this regard.

Once you've defeated him you see a load of cutscenes, say goodbye to everyone then you take off back to your home-town in the countryside at the end of March, your friends give you a life there and you drive off into the sunset.

Overall, I think it's a very good game, the dungeon design is fantastic compared to P4G but everything else is nowhere near as good in my view, I liked a lot of the characters but only truly loved Makoto and Futaba, and Tokyo to explore felt more soulless with less character to it compared to the quaint Inaba town (or whatever it was called) in P4G. The characters in P4G made the game for me, I adored spending time with them, they felt like real people I'd love to spend time with and the beach scene in that game just felt so vivid, I was laughing along at all the banter and everything everytime it was mentioned, but it this I just didn't really care about some characters (fuck Haru) and it felt more forced the way it was done and the team dynamic as a whole.

I really only get time to play properly on the weekends, so I'm quite a long way behind.

I've just finished the 3rd palace, I got to the treasure in one visit (after getting about halfway there in the obligatory first visit when you unlock it in the story), then spent a week or so doing other tasks before beating the boss.

I am enjoying it a lot still, and playing it a couple of times a week is probably helping prevent me burn out on it like I have done occasionally on other JRPGs. I do get annoyed at the bloody cat telling me when to go to bed, though.

I have about 36 hours on my save. A long way still to go, no doubt.
