Buying a Gaming PC

Is it usual, when planning a move to pc, to start fantasising about all the classic games you're going to play.

I'm already thinking about my Prince of Persia run, my Splinter Cell run, my classic Lara run, my classic Bethesda run etc, and what mods are available for them.

It's strange, especially when you think that that GPU I've got my eye on probably won't even have to be turned on to play most of them.

I'm in 'Fuck modern games' mode.

Why not just buy a PS2

Looking at the GPU the internet tells me it’s around the same as a 4070 and price is similar as well. But you won’t get DLSS or frame gen on the 7900, so why not get a 4070 instead?

I don’t really like poking my nose in because I’m not an expert, but seems like the better card to me

I think I've got one in the loft. But I'm just going to collect some stuff on the pc and experiment with augmentations and such.

And yes, I'm targeting a 4070 super for this mid level build, although I'm seriously thinking about getting someone like Inside tech to put it together. It won't actually cost that much more and you've got guarantees and customer support etc.

Had a busy weekend but tried to grab enough hours to break into pc gaming with my new system. Had to learn about resolutions, adaptive v sync, how old games work, how new games work... It's a minefield for the 20 year consolist. And I haven't even got a game new enough to explore dlss.

Did have far cry 3 running before on ultra settings, so that's a start😄

Are you using M&KB? If so my big recommendation for that is Control. Lots of games are better on PC due to technology or backwards compatible technology, but in terms of this game just plays better on PC, Control is the game where it’s like night and day

Ah, it's not for me.

I'm never going to be the desk sitting pc gamer. I've already got it set up as a 'comfy chair' console type experience, hooked into a big 60hz telly (why I needed to learn about adaptive v sync), with an Xbox controller permanently attached.

And from my experiments over the weekend I can't see any reason why I'd need to change any of that.

You have no desk or table to use mouse and keyboard on? Gets tiring very fast without something like that

Also playing old games on a 4070 on a 60hz screen? You don’t adaptive v-sync you just need v-sync on all the time lol

I don't play with mouse and keyboard.

That's what I was saying.

Not necessarily so. For instance, if you use the in-game vsync settings on something like Tomb Raider (reboot) the game drops you to 30fps. However, disabling that and using adaptive vsync in the Nvidia control panel gives you perfect vsync at 60fps, on ultra settings. Looks amazing too.

And could you not refer to my GPU as a '4070.' I mean would you call Superman, 'man.'

Right but you need mouse and keyboard to work the PC. So anytime not in a game it’s a bit extra hassle using M&K without a desk/table/mat

Oh, that’s new to me about v-sync. I didn’t think it would do something like that. I thought it would just regulate the FPS to the TV. Not cut it in half

I was not bad mouthing 4070! It’s very good

Vsync depends on the game. They can set it to 120fps if they wanted but that's down to the devs
