Maf
I was wondering what to do with my old PC, but since 30 series just got an extra life I might see if I can do the mod in mine and hook it up to my TV. Some PC games I would like to play on TV and it would be better than having to move a PC back and forth

It's one I was considering for an upgrade on my brother's PC though)
spatular
^ thanks for the heads up, ive sort of been keeping an eye on them think they were a little cheaper last week, cant remember how much though, and the 5700X3D just came out which is cheaper and looks pretty good too. I am tempted but keep spending money on other stuff, need to save for a few months i think!
Maf
https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2024-asus-rog-swift-oled-pg32ucdm-review-the-best-gaming-monitor-we-have-tested Oh, look the perfect gaming monitor exactly what I was- Quote with the PG32UCDM commanding a $1300/£1350 price point Oh, well. Maf
Damn. The Alienware UW monitor is £660 IF you can get a NHS discount code https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dwf-4314520 So you need to know someone who works for the NHS so they can apply for the code. Even without, the monitor is £740. Which still not bad. Anyone know a nurse? But not for the usual reasons
one-armed dwarf
That is the monitor where I keep reading stories about people getting burn in within a year. There's also some not very impressive things being said ITT about Dell's 3 year warranty https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1bu4neb/who_has_oled_burnin_bring_forward_your_story/ Not sure I would touch these newly released ones either. Metroid66
Thinking of doing a gaming PC build next year. Just a slow relaxed project as I won't have a massive amount of time. But would anyone venture to recommend a good and respected youtuber who does tutorials for beginners.
Snaggletooth
Ones I used were Pauls hardware, Jayz2cents had good building tutorial videos. Research wise gamers nexus, though their videos can get quite heavy
one-armed dwarf
One thing I can say is you probably shouldn't buy the latest intel chips, gamer nexus also have a thing up about that on their latest videos https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/26/24206529/intel-13th-14th-gen-crashing-instability-cpu-voltage-q-a
Metroid66
Yeah, Paul's hardware seems what I'm looking for. He has a starting vid that explains the components (which will give a clue as to where I'm at) and then goes for some builds at different price points. Thanks folks. Jimboxy
I liked Bitwit Kyle's PC building videos when I was building mine, but I don't think he really does that anymore, so probably best finding something more up to date. Not that the nuts and bolts particularly change I guess. This is the only one you ever need anyway
Metroid66
Looking at Paul hardware's 2023 'sweet spot' build ( by which he means easily upgradable). It has a Ryzen 7 7700 CPU, and a radeon RX 7800 xt. I could probably stretch to a more expensive graphics card if anyone has thoughts.
Snaggletooth
If your not planning on building till new year id hold off on buying parts, amd have new cpus out soon and next gen graphics cards are on the horizon. Parts should get cheaper in new year so you might grab some bargains on reduced lines.
one-armed dwarf
I've a 7700x but as I understand the 7700 is generally considered a better value option, not a whole lot between them. No complaints myself. The Zen 4 platform is very mature now, it had some issues way back but not anymore in my experience. The top tier gaming CPU is probably the 7800X3D, that is going really into the high end of things though and may not be necessary. But I only mention it cause looking at amazon it seems to have gone waaaaay down in price for some reason. Like snaggletooth says tho AMD are just about to release a new CPU in a few weeks. Honestly tho you might still be good with that 7700 but better to just wait until August to be certain on it. I don't know a lot about AMD graphics cards now but I will say one thing to take into account is VRAM. 8GB VRAM is having a rough time with modern games, 12GB should probably be the minimum to aim for now. That card has 16 so it won't have any problems there The big difference between AMD and Nvidia will be ray tracing performance tho, if this is a thing that matters to you. Nvidia are just way better at it, and they have a superior performance improving option in DLSS (AI upscaling, make framerate go faster with good visuals). AMD has FSR, though it is improving. It really depends on how important RT is to you tho, it's a whole different ballgame to console RT but it gets into kinda stupid territory with the cost of some graphics cards. Also whatever you do make sure to get a high quality power supply, the videos you're watching will also mention this. Probably a good idea to avoid ASUS these days for their parts as they have very very bad customer support. edit if you're building next year then yea I'd go a step further and say you should just wait and see with the GPU as well, cause both suppliers will have new stuff by then.
Metroid66
All good advice. I'm just learning all the basics, terminology and so forth for now. I'll plan my most up to date affordable build at the end of the year then start buying components as and when. I suppose, given the advice here, CPU and GPU will be the final purchases when I can pick the newest in accordance with my budget.
Snaggletooth
Yup definately dont over spend on mbd, something like a b650 will see you good. And as mentioned at least 12gb gpu, something like the 7900 gre is quite good value on amd side.
