Buying a Gaming PC

that pc is above my pay grade :D looks ace though so if you've got the money why not i guess! only thing i wasn't sure about is the cpu cooler, i've never heard of those ones, but pc specialist are supposed to be pretty good so you'd think it'd be fine? maybe upgrade to the next one up that's supposed to be better (although again never heard of it) for £8? after that they're all water coolers so i've no idea.

I tried to find a noctua for him but all these configurators are all about that water cooling stuff. I really don't like the idea of it tbh and don't know what's good or bad. I guess noctua doesn't look 'cool', or something so they don't put them in the prebuilds

Corsair are on that dropdown and they are reputable, I don't know what the TDP indicates tho? The kind of CPU power draw that matches the cooler or something? Def check that out

yeah i was going to say if i was spending that kind of money on a pc i'd want a noctua too but it wasn't an option. yeah i think that's right about the TDP. apparently it isn't a very accurate measurement, but the one that's £8 more has a higher TDP so should be better, that's all i was going off.

I found this article on RPS about the 3080 vs 3080ti and I think @Sly Reflex is right and it's not worth it

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/nvidia-rtx-3080-vs-3080-ti-graphics-card-benchmarks

Basically at full 4K or 1440p there's nothing in it. So maybe I get the 3080 and a 1440p monitor. It doesn't seem that great of a card for 4K and the extra £400 for the ti doesn't really do enough to improve the situation.

Still learning.

What makes you say it isn't that great of a card for 4K?

There basically isn't a better card right now, except the 80ti/90 which don't offer the returns that justify the price.

One thing also about PC gaming is lots of games are future looking. So for instance Witcher 3 hairworks, not designed to run on 2015 GPUs really. More like 2018 GPUs (tho I still keep it turned off). Pyscho ray tracing in Cyberpunk, same thing. Altho that setting makes the game look beautiful at times

Native 4k is incredibly expensive, tho so are these cards lol. PS5 does a lot of reconstruction and settles for 30fps or very middling ray tracing. RT is still kind of a future technology

At some point I think there will be a 'PC recommendations thread', or maybe one already exists. Quake II RTX will be the first thing I recommend playing around with

Going by those comparisons in the RPS article it looks like it doesn't hit that high of frame rate at 4K with ultra settings. But since I'd be sitting so close to the screen and the screen being smaller I think dropping resolution in favour of better frame rates and higher settings makes more sense.

Quite often on PS5 I'm happy at 1440p with higher frame rates and ray tracing like on Ratchet and Miles Morales. Applying the same idea here.

That's the idea, with these cards they use DLSS to bridge the visuals gap between rendering at 1440 and displaying at 4k.

I've mixed opinions on how it looks but it's a superior image than PS5. But does weird things sometimes (rain disappears in Death Stranding)

Easy high performance on maxed settings at 4k with current gen isn't a reality yet. Maybe the 5080

So are you saying look at the 1440p ultra settings and DLSS gets you the rest of the way to 4K with weird exceptions?

That's what most people are doing, if the game supports DLSS

Cyberpunk supports DLSS and has a pretty decent implementation without lots of weird stuff. Death Stranding doesn't have RT and can run 4k native anyway, even on my GPU.

Any game with RT seems to have DLSS and it's only RT which will cause 'trouble' for these cards. Standard rendering is a piece of piss for them.
