Guitar Hero Live

For those that dont know...

Guitar Hero is back... and its Live!

Most pressing, the fucking buttons have changed, they've changed the fucking buttons. Gone are the five colours in a row. Now they're all the same colour, theres six of them - 3 at the top and three directly underneath. In theory this is easier but my brain doesnt work that way yet. They symbols are obviously different as there are no colours to match them with so you have plectrum shaped icons that are either black or white. Black are the top three, white are the bottom. You can also power chord by hitting top and bottom together.

Ive gone from half decent to being a bit shit again but I spent an hour and a half practicing last night and i was getting better, i was able to do two quick notes on the top and a note on the bottom then switch back up to the top (then power chord) relitively pain free. Still, when it gets fast I was fucking up here and there. So it's a long road ahead to re-learn shit to a point where your brain just does it for you but I am enjoying the experience thus far.

The two main modes of gameplay are Live and TV. Live is career mode, you play as part of a 'real' band to a 'live' crowd and jolly on through becoming more awesome and visiting bigger venues getting all famous and shit, same old story. TV is a bit different. TV is a constantly broadcasting network of channels that you can hop on to at any time and play track. It's like an interactive MTV channel, but here there are about 10 channels showcasing different types of music that you can flick between. There are always people to play against wether they are online or offline, I guess it just selects people around your skill level and you have to try and beat their score. The higher you finish the more exp and coins you get, the exp is for leveling up and unlocking skills you can upgrade (i've no idea what these are yet, im level 6 and you unlock your first skill at level 9) and coins are for buying 'plays'. The game did explain what this entails but i didnt read it or listen to be honest and it hasen't really affected me so far so fuck it, I'll find out what it is later.

Look, amongst all this shit is Guitar Hero. I just wanted to play Guitar Hero again. And I am. And it's good fun.

my brian doesnt work that way yet

Ive told you dude, you are too patient with that man.

Can you see any reason why they have changed the button layout or why the button layout has changed? Do you think it will be better like that when you are used to it?

To be honest I was sort of put off getting back into this when I thought the buttons were the same, but having to relearn it from scratch seems like a massive ball ache.

I can definately see it being easier when it becomes muscle memory, for me anyway with my tiny child hands.

Some good impressions there, illdog, cheers for that.

I think if RB4 was online I'd get that as I've got a ridiculous number of fake guitars and drums already, but as it's not GHL is going to have to be an Xmas purchase I think, I just want that GH thrill when you nail a combo back again.

I havnt played it, but I feel like you are going to be disappointed if you are expecting something new...

EDIT: I hope you are disappointed, and cry

Well I've played it and it is something new to the plastic guitar game genre. In your face Sam.

I stupidly ordered my copy from zavvi so will be playing it at some point this year if I'm lucky.

seems pretty ace so far.

Yea, it is. I havent got a great deal more to say about it but I'm really enjoying it.

I've been going through career mode which is a bit pony really, you are the guitarist for a host of different bands playing at venues and festivals. The camera is your point of view as always and "you" look at your various band members during the performances and they nod at you and wink and say "yeah!" and it's all cheesey as fuck.

It seems this time round they've made a career 'lite' to purposely swing you towards playing GHTV which is fine really seen as they've gone to the trouble of putting together a 24 hour set list on constant repeat.

There's a good article here all about GHTV and how it works, explains it far better than I can:

Yeah gh tv seems pretty cool. I've played this quite a bit now and in some ways really like it, and in other ways I'm not so sure about it. The career as illdog says isn't great, it's not bad either, but it's low on songs, I'm not convinced by the first person perspective thing, it's a bit wierd how everyone is going crazy telling you how great you are, then mess up and the next second they all hate your guts. I've been trying to practice a bit on a higher difficulty, so then they just hate my guts all the time which is a little offputting. And the last 3 songs are great but most of the others I haven't heard of, although they aren't too bad I guess.

Gh tv is cool, and this weekend being free play is nice. I also like the new button layout, although still getting used to it. But some stuff about that mode is not great, like the guitar upgrades that appear to make he scoring against others a bit redundant unless everyone has maxed everything out. And obviously when they eventually turn it off the base game is a bit light on content.

  • 1 month later...

this feels like Quantum Leap the game. You're thrown in, everyone seems to know you, you've no idea who any of them are, then you have to perform songs you're hearing for the first time ever as you're playing them. All it needs is for the camera to pan to the side and show Al shaking his head at you

seems alright so far though, feels like being able to play guitar is helping me blag the songs here, although the timing seems harsher than I was expecting. The timing should be set right, or close enough that I could adjust, but where the line is (right on the bar) is slightly further down the neck than I feel like it should be

Also, the developers of this bought some stuff from the site I manage the other week. Not related to the game in any way, just a bit of trivia for you
