Resident Evil 2 Remake

The thing I wonder is if there's a secret Nemesis tease in there. That's the one cool thing you wouldn't want to get spoiled... if it's a thing.

At this point I accept I will have every video game spoiled for me. I'll probably see a thumbnail of the final boss to DMC before the game even ships.

How was a ten minute segment that bad?

I was reading an impressions piece on Kotaku earlier, they almost make it seem that Mr X is constantly on your tail and isn't particularly scripted... that could make things very interesting if it's the case.

The collision detection for Sherry was the greatest negative I can remember.

So they are retroactively making Mr X into Nemesis? Not sure what to make of that choice and what it means for the chances of REmake 3??

The collision detection was great in the favour of the player, seriously, if you can't get through that section without taking a hit there's something wrong.

Nemesis is completely scripted, granted he may be scripted in one of maybe two or three different places but still scripted. If Mr X can basically show up anywhere that's a different thing entirely.

Granted it has been... 20 years, perhaps? Since I played RE 2 but all I remember is the environment really worked against Sherry. It wasn't on account of the dogs so much as the corners didn't seem to account for the smaller hit box very well. Plus she was slow as molasses, which made the segment stick in my head as a chore. Like That escort sequence in MGS 2.

It's funny, I don't recall seeing Mr X? Which I assume I must have as I completed the game with HUNK and Tofu. But even after looking up some videos on YouTube, I was drawing a blank.

Yeah probably. I think any of the 'stalkers' will play out like this. Perhaps more of the Nemesis style smashing through walls n shit. Maybe allow more if an Alien Isolation thing where even if you're in another area he could just smash through and take you by surprise. I found the Father pretty predictable in an Outlast style stalker thing.

The thing about Alien Isolation is that kind of unscripted stalker stuff can get annoying and mess with the game a bit. I was thinking about this remake earlier and how Nemesis is the best chaser enemy they've done. But he's totally scripted (with some small things that vary). But I think that tightly controlling all those encounters worked in its favour.

I just wonder if the hardcoded behaviour makes for more interesting enemies than ones that are more dynamic and unpredictable like the Bakers in VII who I just found really annoying and unthreatening

Anyway there's a demo probably coming out on Friday, but it's so close to release that it seems a bad idea to play a demo now.

Yeah I agree the Alien got annoying at times but it carried a threat that the Bakers didn't, which I think attributed to both the fear and annoyance. Baker sees you; run (not even that at times) and hide a bit. Alien sees you; ?.

Plus how smart it is; after successfully evading VS being dropped in to keep you on your toes.

I think if they're smart he only turns up at set points like in the original. Provides that adrenaline surge. Then fucks off.

I played that demo. It starts off in the police station so might be a bit spoilery if you don't want to see that stuff yet.

It's kind of a wild demo content wise. I think you can explore almost all the police station or at least as much of it as I remember. The catch is you don't have much time to see it.

It seems fine. It assuages one of my main concerns which is would the zombos be easy to deal with but I got overwhelmed a lot here. The knife counterattack from REmake is back but here you use the combat knife to do it and it can break (so no buttering zombies to death over and over like in CVX or RE4)

One thing I want to add is I had a very tough time making the game look good on my TV. The dark scenes look grey. My TV is fairly mid to budget range so it's not going to have the highest quality picture. But looking online it sounds like complaints about overly high black levels in HDR are common.
