Warframe

So,

Wanting to take a break from Destiny, I've had a go at playing Warframe on the PS4, and I have to say that so far, I've really enjoyed it.

It's a 3rd person shooter, that feels part wat between halo and Mass effect.

There's a (ludicrously expensive) paid currency if you want to go down that path, but everything is obtainable for free, you just have to wait for it.

Has anyone else played this?

There's not a great deal in the way of in-depth explanations, but provided you roll through the levels in the order that the game tries to make you, then you get the basics covered.

If anyone does pick it up, a word of advice would be, don't buy anything until you've hit the tutorial on how to use the store. you get given a chunk of premium game credits. You can spend these on some really useful items from the store, or you can do Like I did, waste them all on buying different colours for your armour and weapons.

  • 2 years later...

So Destiny 2 is currently shit. I can't face going back to The Division because reasons, many many reasons. Already spent too much of my life on Diablo III and the Borderlands games, so why not give this a go? Everyone says it's great once you get into it.

I actually tried this a few months back when @smallofbooty started on it. Wasn't impressed much, I hate the art design and a certain Manc was so enthused by it he was giving out advice at a million miles a second which wasn't helping any. I decided to sack it off and maybe give it another try later on.

Tonight was the night that was going to happen. Booted up. Played solo for the most and had a bit of a study on what the game actually expects of me. I don't know the devs name, but they need to hire people that can actually tutorial stuff like this that make you do an action a few times by forcing you into it. I eventually managed to figure it out and get off Earth but I can see why people would give up, mainly because it's tell you you need to do stuff and not actually explaining well enough for you to do that thing.

Stuff like building new gear as well. If you buy a blueprint and it tells you you need certain materiel, it doesn't tell you were to get them. On the mission/map select screen ti tells you if you cap all the nodes you can automatically pull materials from the planet. Doesn't explain what caps are or how you do them, nor does it tell you where the materials you're looking for to build your new guns and equipment are. Sure, it'll let you drop real world money on stuff, but everything else it has to show is so bastard cryptic it makes you wonder how anyone gets past it to enjoy the game. Like, I have no idea why I can't equip certain guns because of matery levels, so I'm stuck with a bow and arrow and kunai, which makes the run and gun bits a mite hard since gunning fuckers down is hard when you can't pray and spray them when you're getting overrun.

Speaking of the actual game part of it, yeah, it's alright. I like the extermination and defence modes best. It's a bit mindless but I should imagine once you get into it and you have a few mates on the conversation can turn into soemthing else because the game's not that demanding in that respect.

So yeah. It's unusual. It's a loot game where you go kill stuff and make equipment to kill harder stuff. It's not kill stuff and hope you might get the gun or armour you want, or at least it isn't yet. Looks like there's loads of daily things to do for blueprints and material, so you're not going to go short of things to work towards.

Tired of Destiny 2? Can't be arsed with The Divisions Base of Operations cunt that's moaning about his back all the time and the horrible inventory management? Then maybe consider giving this a look over.

The art's still fucking shite, by the way, all the suits and enemies look like hammered dicks with faces scrawled on them. You can't win 'em all...

I tried this before Christmas and the frame rate was awful to the point it made the game unplayable.

Played for a good few sessions now and I've not seen anything like this. Had a bit of slowdown here and there, but nothing too frequent or intrusive. In fact I'm pretty impressed at how smooth it is for the most, did a mission tonight where we were fighting zombie like monsters and there' was lighting effects and blood and guts getting flung all over the place without so much as a drop.

When I got in this afternoon I was really wanting to play it, but I had stuff on that needed doing so I had to put it off. Played a bit of solo, a bit with randoms and a bit with @smallofbooty. It all works like you'd expect it to. Did a few different styled missions, there's quite a bit of variety on show, some of it is pretty miserable or even impossible to complete on your lonesome. You're going to need 3 people to be on the safe side.

I dunno, it has something and I'm not quite sure what it is. It's pretty holistic. I sort of like it on some levels but I don't know why. I have no idea what's going on story wiser. I'm not sure why everything is connected in the way it is or why the progression is like it is. Why do you start out on Earth and then abandon it for Venus, then do the same again to jaunt off to Mercury? There's some sort of war on because you're rescuing people that are presumably in the suits you control, but beyond that I have not got a fucking clue. This isn't just an argument directed at Warframe, this could be aimed at a lot of games. There's a 'lore' computer in the area you kick everythign off from that can probably explain, but it's a bit lazy putting something like that in when it could be part of the game. It's more than Destiny did, I guess.

Have you ever been in one of those really old pubs? I'm talking really really old, like hundreds and hundreds of years old. Those buildings that started out small, and then they had a bit built on here. An bit built on there. That's kind of how this game feels, like you're walking throw an old pub through all the little rooms without being able to stop and give them a proper going over. It's a real Frankenstein monster of a game.

I'll probably play it a bit more, I've barely scratched the surface. I'd like to see what the rest of the game offers before I give it a final verdict.

That art design though, it's like being trapped in a lift with someone that has bad flatulence. It makes me want to gag.

I have seen some texture pop in, but it's more to do when the game very first loads up, I think it loads in stock stuff and then pops your character in with whatever equipment and colour schemes you have selected, It's a bit daft, but it's something I can overlook.

Played a bit more last night after I couldn't sleep. Having a bit of more focused time I managed to figure out how to find where the story missions are, turns out the nodes on the planets, which you can find because they have markers but also have location markers in a optional tab that tells you the name of the mission and the location (although not the planet, which would make pinpointing them a bit easier. I shouldn't have to learn what each node on each planet is called from memory.

There really is a lot of variety here in the missions it doles out and they sort of affect how you approach each one. I've done a few of each what I assume the game has to offer so far and they play out very differently. The prisoner ones I've done have been pretty covert affairs, although I've taken to running in and shooting the place up to the point where they'll execute the prisoners and then take it a bit more stealthily. After that it's a case of play it by ear, sometimes it's a mad dash to the end resulting in some Titanfallesque acrobatics as you run up and across walls and boost across chasms, but that is dialled up to 11 because you have a bastardised version of the physics you'd see John Woo or the Wachowski siblings stuff. It's like they took Metal Gears Solids Ninja and fed him on amphetamine.

Same with the Spy missions. Getting to a computer to get data suddenly turns into Prince of Persia, except when you fuck up instead of just dying you start a fuse that just layers pressure on. There's something to be said of how satisfying breaking into one of those places is, silently dropping down and shanking the last guard in the back and then collecting the objective without setting any alarms off.

This is it though, the game never explicitly tells you any of this is possible. Sure it tells you you can wall run and glide and all that, but it doesn't tell you you can basically combo anything with anything. Want to dive out of cover Max Payne style and shove shurikens up someones arse? You can totally do that. Want to slide around on your knees like in Vanquish shooting people up in the face and then lopping their legs off as a final insult as you whizz past? You can do that as well. That's what this games star attraction is, it's this completely malleable control system that basically lets you do it if you willing to give it a go. It's not really about just killing, just about looking cool while you do it. Why kill a guy by running him through with your sword when you can run up a vertical column like something out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and then slam down on him like someone turned the gravity up by a factor of 10.

If feels so good. I'm not sure how long it'll continue to entertain, but it appears that there's a lot more to it than when you originally fire it up. If only the art design didnt't look like the air con had broke in Tussaud's..

Wow, well the open world bit is terrible. Laggy as fuck and frame drops all over. It makes you grateful for how Destiny does it, especially since they have peopel dropping in and out as well, none of this party of 4 only stuff.

Also seen my first bit of "Give us some money?" design. Spent the session looking for dog eggs (not those ones) and I need to make an incubator to hatch them. I can make the incubator myself, but I need to get to Jupiter for the materials. Which would be fine, but I'm still on Mars and I think there's one or two planets to go before I can get there. I could pony up, but I'm not going to. Dogs are fucking shit anyway.

Going for the triple down!

Spent another session on this tonight. Despite being a bit arse about face how they do certain things I am beginning to like it a lot. It took me a while to realise it, but it has the whole Diablo III layered loop in it. The just another go thing is ingrained right into it at a base level, and that last go always pushes you close to seeing something completed so you have another go and that puts you within touching distance of something else. All the time you have these clocks ticking in the background and because of the way you're back and forth to the ship they're all staggered, so once the ball is rolling you have a lot of stuff going on and you're seemingly always having something to do. So you go fight. You check you mods, you put the mods into your equipment, maybe buy a blueprint for a weapon category you're about to max out and see if you can build it. Since you can only build 6 things at once you're constantly back and forth checking and pulling completed projects off the desk which feed back into the loop or you levelling up.

It was the same sort of thing that was in MGSV, you had these events you could kick off by getting materials and then you'd have a time sensitive period where you'd go do other stuff while you waited on the results and rewards. It's pulled right from the mobile market with the whole Farmville thing but I think it works in context. Most wait I've seen is for an actual Frame, which was 72 hours. I think there's three parts to a Frame and you have to construct those too, but the parts that make it up are like 24 hours or less. I don't know if that's reasonable or not yet. I'm currently in the process of making one but having to find the parts to make the parts that go into the final product is something I don't understand how it works. I assume there's a boss or something you fight and you get a chance at a random part of the kit. I'd have to look into it.

The whole game is about collecting these bits of kits and guns and levelling up and tweaking them with mods to suit your play style. However, once I finally get this new Frame, that's it. I have no more spaces. There's currently 34 Frames in the game. I think for additional spaces to store Frames it's 10 "Platinum" per hit. That's close to £16 right there. Similarly the amount of weapons you can have at once is capped if what @smallofbooty was saying last night, so you can bet to max that out so you can have everything is another £16 right there. Maybe more, maybe less, I'd have to check. I'm nowhere near breaking that point and I'm not sure where the squeeze starts. I'm going to play more so eventually I'll find out.

£32 doesn't sound to bad for the game. I've had enough enjoyment out of this that if I'd have actually paid money for it I would have been completely fine with ym purchase, because overall I think it's a fun game. It takes forever to get going but once it does it's grand. If you've not played it for ages or you've not give it a fair shake, go back and do so, since I think it's worth the time, especially if you're playing it in between other games where the timer stuff is essentially going to become irreverent since you're only going to be playing it a handful of times every month.

But it goes much further than that. While not as constricting as the things I mentioned above, I feel that they are taking putting a price on as many things as they possibly can because they can. For instance there's 18 different sets of colour swatches that can be bought for 75 Platinum each. That's close enough to £70. It's not just stuff like that, there's a million fractured things that all cost Platinum.

It's a weird place to be in, since I'm enjoying the game and I am sure I would have bought it if it was a one off £40 or something for the lot. But it isn't what we have here is practically an endless pit to chuck money down. It might only be 50p or whatever 10 Platinum works out at, but when you're doing it over and over it's going to be hard to keep track of how much you've actually spent. It's like putting 2p's in the penny shovers at the seaside when you're trying to push a prize over, you know it seems insignificant when you're pushing handfuls of 2p's into them slots trying to get the tat to fall over the edge, but in reality you're still spending a lot of money without really realising it.

It says it all when there's a Platinum bundle on PSN store that's a tick over £100.

I dunno. If I play it a lot more and it becomes a game I play in rotation I might chuck them £20 or something, but it'll be for my own convenience just as much as theirs to lift some of the mad tight restrictions they've put in place.

I think as well this really puts into perspective the other full games that do the lootboxes and MTX as well. That's a conversation for another thread though.

Enjoying these blogs Slydog. Interesting to hear thoughts from someone in the looter genre.

I just can't get into it. Starting to bore of the Division but I haven't bought any DLC. Might have a go at the other Raid/Incursion see if it's any good. Warframe would be the next choice or hopefully D2 is saved soon...

The weird thing is I wasn't all that sold on it when I started playing.

There's parts of it I actively hate as well. I was just playing and I unlocked the Archwing and the mission it introduces it in has a whole thing where you can be instakilled by a massive gun that's mean for killing spaceships. I think alone this wouldn't be a bad thing if it actually put a marker on the gun so you knew that there had to be something between the marker, but all you get are audio cues. It's really hard to tell where the blast is coming from and you can be annihilated unexpectedly because it's all a bit ropey. Maybe future Archwing missions won't be as toss, but that's definitely not a good way to introduce players to what is otherwise a visual spectacle by making them replay it over and over.

Mission straight after that was another mission I've not seen yet which I really enjoyed, it was an escort mission similar to Overwatch's escort matches, except the kicker here in that the vehicle dies as soon as you get it out the door and you have to use your shields to push it forwards. It brings up some interesting gameplay, since you need the shields to keep you alive, but you need to carry on pushing the vehicle, if you don't defend it well enough they can push it back.  Playing alone it becomes a bit of a resource management game as you dip in and out of the radius of the vehicle to keep it rolling forwards while keeping yourself protected. In co-op it turns into a bit of a relay where people take turns to power the vehicle.

I've got to a bit of an impasse. I need to get the Phobos to carry the story forwards but I need to crack something called Lith Relic. To open one of these I need to complete a Lith Fissure mission and these are a bit tough to do alone. For reference Lith Relics are sort of like Engrams, but to fissure is like doing a Heroic or Nightfall strike. Each Lith seed (looks like a bronzed cabbage) has a set loot pool, and by opening them you can farm for parts towards whatever you're building.

Warframe is some good shit. I think if you're the sort of person that likes any of the looter style games it's going to grab you, more so if you're more into the action type looters like Borderlands, Destiny and The Division. It's just not immediately apparent. The game doesn't help itself either, since it's impenetrable to get yourself and even when people are telling you what's what it can be a bit of an overload because of the way they've set out how progress works. I still don't get how mastery works. I think each time you level something up  it levels a bar up similar to how The Elder Scrolls works, but with Frames, Guns and pets in the place of the disciplines. Once you hit a certain threshold instead of just levelling up you have to do a test which bumps you up a level. At least that's what I assume is going on, I have no fucking idea if I'm close to being correct there.

I did my second test this last session (you can only do a test every 24 hours, if you fail you have to wait it out) so now I am level 2. It's a peculiar way of doing things, but I think it sort of forces people to be able to play the game to progress. In the games I mentioned above you could get to max level through sheer persistence, but here if one of those dojo lesson promotion things has you snagged you're fucked. So when you see someone who is highly ranked not only have they played a fucking ton, but they also know what they're doing because the game's made them go through a loot ninja version of the License tests in Gran Turismo.

As it turns out I hit this today. I forgot to check out how many weapons I have (or how many weapons you can own, it's a fucking lot though the marketplace is jammed with them) and for 2 extra slots it's 12 Platinum, which is just over 60p. So I guess 20 weapon slots would be fine to collect your favourites and cycle through the weapons you've not levelled to max. To do that would cost about 6 quid.

Also the 'pet' you have flying around with you can have slots as well, but there's only 9 of those. I think it's the same as the weapons, 2 slots for 12 Platinum.

I don't know which came first, but one of the levels looks like Calus' Dreadnaught with all the gold. In fact if you only get a glance at them you'd be forgiven for thinking one ripped off who. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Played some more of the open world part since they have an event on where you get rep or something. Not sure what the deal is but I think I contributed. Also did a few of the open world things and they are rock hard, definitely something you're going to want to do in a squad. I went in solo and had a rough time. No lag, no frame drops or anything untoward. I don't know if this is because I was playing alone, or whether the patch ironed some issues out. No idea.

What we do have is a big square of land full of dynamic objectives, the game plays very differently when you're not in an enclosed space. It gets super hectic as well, we're talking enemies moving against each other in Destiny hectic. There's ships that fly across and carpet bomb the area as well. There's caves to find and spelunker too. I think you can fish too, but I'm not sure how you go about it.

Also included is a full storyline just dealing with that open world bit, as well as bounties and stuff where the more in you get with the local tribe the more shops and discounts you get. When it works it's kind of interesting, but when it's bad it's like a circle of hell.

Had another go at the space shooter parts. It's serviceable, but I think that's probably the nicest thing I could say about it, aside from the sky boxes being stunning. From a gameplay aspect it feels so foreign and detached from the rest of the game I don't really get why it exists....

... Until I found out you can fly your Archwing about the open world bit. Time for a little carpet bombing of your own! :D

Landed on my feet and found a Lith void mission on Earth that was low level. I cannot believe my luck with this stuff. Basically you get these things that look like bronzed cabbages that are the games engrams. Each Lith cabbage or whatever they're fucking called have a set that is determined to where you picked them up, with the top prize being an ultra rare part to a frame or a gun part or whatever. All three of mine dropped at the highest stuff they could possibly get. I guess I better mention that too. If you go in with four players and everyone makes it out, each Lith cabbage is broken open to reveal the contents. Since there's several different flavours of Lith cabbage. if each person takes a different flavour in when they're finally cracked open at the end you get to pick which ever drop you think is best. Imagine if in destiny when you finish a Nightfall and it doles out the loot, you get to pick the one you want instead of getting the fucking No Land Beyond for the umteenth time. It's sweet as fuck. Some of the mobs in this modifier were hard as fuck, it's not often you see people die as regularly as I saw tonight. It's challenging when you're at that level without going into taking the piss territory.

After that I tried to open up Phobos. I had the Lith cabbages cracked open and all I needed was what looks like Data Lattices.. The most frustrating thing is that earlier on during the week I saw two of them right next to other, scanned one and left the other. Due to the random nature of how the game stitches levels together I could be looking for ages, not that it matters too much. It's like looking for the dog egg drop, I'm levelling up shit as I play and getting bundles of credits and materials so it's all good. I'm sure I'll manage to find one next session, it's just a matter of scouring the levels and turning them upside down to find the shit I need to go forwards.

Did I mention that all the stages themselves are randomly generated? It's the first game I've seen that manages to do it in 3D without being total shit.

This game has more stuff in it than I know what to do with.

Also I've just twigged tonight that the whole 'mods' thing that Destiny 2 has done has tried to replicate  the thought process of how they work in Warframe, but they've dumbed it down to a point where none of it really matters. When you start levelling up something and playing about with how you prefer your loadouts there's really deep and customisation set of tools there for you to tinker with.

It's kind of refreshing to have something so indepth regarding that, games are eroding that sort of decision making to streamline it so that idiots don't fall too far behind, but how they've done it means that you're always going to be looking for mods to have various builds where you swap stuff in and out to try and get your perfect set up. It's so perfectly woven into the fabric of how these sorts of games work that you're never done since there's always possibilities, and none of them can ever be wrong if you managing to make it stick where it matters. Wiggle bits there, cram in a mod here and get that little bit more performance where you need it. You could go super anal retentive with it and have everything just how you like.

This game is ridiculous. Perfect? Not by any means, but it understands the personalities of the people that like these games and it really caters to their gaming persuasion.

And it's free. That's the most baffling thing about this. How does this even exist? It's a complete anomaly in gaming.

Bit of an afternoon sesh going there.

Did a bit more open world stuff. It's decent enough. When night falls it gets really hard though, I don't know if that's intentional but it really is fucking hard.

Had a gander at the clans stuff. There's weapons and Frames locked behind the clans. Looks like you build your own dojo up and can have rooms to research on each of the four enemies to get some of their gear. Might be something we can work our way towards if people are interested in playing. You can transfer loot back and forth as well, which will help people looking for specific drops.

There's also factions. You know how in Destiny there's factions, but none of it really matters since it's just a time sink for you to put effort into for colours and bits of armour and reskinned guns? Here there's several factions all fighting for power where levelling one up might piss another one off, but they all have alliances and rivalries and from what I gather it affect gameplay. I don't think there's any Frames up for grabs, but it looks like there's weapons and other bits of customisation. Speaking of which you can emblazon your Frame with the logos and place them where you want, the size you want and the colours you want. You have full control of that stuff just like you have full control of what everything else looks like colour wise.

In other news I got the thing I was looking for first go. Went to the Phobos junction and give the guardian a good going over there and now I'm on Phobos I can get the rest of the shit I need done to open the Ceres junction. There's also a place called "The Void" which is off Phobos, so I'll give that a look over when I've completed the missions running up to it.

Seen another type of Archwing mission as well, one where you have a time limit to race through an obstacle course. I've not managed to pass that one, although I have just figured out how to add mods to the Archwing (it's hidden in an option) and I think that the buffs might possibly help me.

With any luck I might be able to build another pet or even get the dog in a day or so. It's all a race to get it done before Monster Hunter World comes out.

Played with @smallofbooty with whose assistance I managed to get to Ceres. Ceres is fucking hard, man. I think some levelling up is going to need to happen before I get anywhere on Ceres, mainly because to open the next junction we need to beat a boss that kicked us all over the shop, while said boss is backed up by another boss. Ceres is also hazardous as fuck. You know that bit in the Star Wars prequels whee R2D2 and C3P0 are in the robot factory? That. Looks amazing. Will kill you dead if you fuck up.

Had an amazing moment in one of the levels where me and Small were fighting side by side on this space station when suddenly the windows got smashed, this resulted in the enemies getting sucked into space all at the same time and us having to find a panel to hack to put the shutters down on the window to restore pressure before we were killed. So yeah, valid tactics long as your fine with being exposed to the cold blackness of space.

I think my next sessions will be helping Small get to where I am. I might get lucky and get some of the blueprints I need for the parts of the Frames I've got pieces for already.I think they drop from boss mobs on the assassination missions, although I'm not 100% on that. I'm going to need to pay attention.

Had a quick look to see how many weapons and mods there are in the game. Over 300 weapons and 650 mods. Interestingly it shows you were everything drops as well, so if you're looking for a particular mod you can go farm the activity that drops it. I learnt this from the codex, which is in game, just like the Grimoire in Destiny should have been.

Doesn't look like a destiny killer on the surface, but that's what it is. Flies inder the radar and makes Destiny look like a complete mug. Warframe is the Destiny assassin.

Pretty much. At current standing this game tramples all over Destiny 2 though, it's pretty ridiculous.

Played the Phobos through to get to the place dubbed "The Void" which looks like all the place where all the loose ends end up. So you start out on Earth and that goes in 2 directions, towards the Sun and away from it, but there's some cases where moons of planets  that their own threads which go backwards and forward between planets as well.

It's another idea ripped off from Destiny (or maybe Destiny stole it?) where it's an area where all the mobs are made up of the mobs from each faction set in a lovely Arabian style palace filled with traps and stuff. Nothing much to add aside from that because I've made it this far I can now make more pets, all be them the ones that don't require me to visit Jupiter to get materials from there. Jupiter seems to be a place where a lot of the things I'm walled out of making stuff that requires spores. I actually got dragged there with some people I was partied up with but I couldn't see any of the spores I needed, so I guess there's maybe a mechanic in place that stops those nodes from generating until you've beaten the required junction.

Did some bronze cabbage busting and managed to drop 2 Prime weapons in 2 runs, which are like top tier super buffed version of the vanilla gear. I've not had a look at the requirements yet to build them, no doubt I'll have to farm materials from a planet I've not been to yet. Nice to have that gear ready and waiting for me to make it when I'm able.

Also I just figured something out that might help level anyone that starts playing up a little bit quicker. When using secondary you have an option between building 1 gun or building akimbo style guns. Because of the way levelling up works, buy the single gun first and level it all the way to max level, when you're close to maxing the gun out, buy another gun or make one via the blueprint. When you buy the blueprint to make the akimbo version the two guns you have will be fused into one item slot and you can level them up again. It's pretty stupid that you have to wait for them to be 'built' though since they both exist, you're just holding one in each hand. But yeah, for some reason there's a 12h timer on the construction of those bad boys. It's going to take a fair bit of inventory juggling to get everything working smoothly, unless you spend out a lot of cash.

Onto Jupiter now after a hell of a boss fight to open the relay. @smallofbooty breezed through it, but I have a different class which meant it was a case of building loads of walls and AoE'ing the the prick and then hammering it harder than most of you would hammer one of them ladies you see in them Amsterdam windows. So here's where I get the things I needed for the dog and some of the weapons I got ages ago, right? WRONG! That's actually Saturn, which I have to complete Jupiter and Europa first before going there. They really want you to spend that coin or play like fuck to get that dog hatched.

By the power imbued to me I will be dishonouring my heritage as a Yorkshireman if I pay a penny for stuff like that. Good things come to those that wait, or in this case good things come to those that beat long and hard enough on the door of the game. I will have to spend some of the free 'platinum' they give you to get you started on spaces to house Warframes, because I have Oberon currently being built and I have a Rhino in the wings to be crafted as soon as I have the last handful of materials to get him on the operating table.

Had my first foray into not using Volt. Oberon finally came off the production lines and I'm not sure what to make from the differences.

The main differences are the skills. Each Warframe has four active skills and one passive skill. The active skills need a pick up that drops from pretty much everywhere.

Volt had a passive that allowed him to build up electricity anytime he was in contact with the ground for his next melee or electric attack. So if you touched down and then slid along the floor and sliced at a guy with your sword he'd just explode in a ball of sparks. With that in mind you had to play around that to get the best out of his other active skills, which are

  1. You throw out a bolt of lightning that chains and stuns anything it doesn't kill. You need to be in contact with the floor for some time to see the difference the charge passive builds up.
  2. A self buff where you get really fast, because the game already feels like it's running at a million miles per hour at points, so why not go faster?
  3. A sheild which isn't that dissimilar to the Titans bit in Destiny 2. This shield is actually good though, since you can shoot through without retribution and also pick it up and move it about. Even wear it as a riot shield if you want.
  4. This is a big AoE thing that is basically a fuck you to anything caught in it.

Oberon has a passive that allows you to get a one time rez on the pet you've taken in. I don't know if that stacks with mods that you can put into your frame or pet, so it might be entirely worthless. I don't know yet.

  1. This is similar to Volt's except the range isn't as good. An orb fires out and hits whatever you're aiming at, which them splits off and fires out spurs which damage and knock down anything surrounding the target. It's not as good as Volts first, there's something quite satisfying about watching electric arc between enemies, this feels a bit disconnected. It still gets the job done, just not with the spectacular light show.
  2. Hallowed ground puts a carpet forward which basically fucks up anything stood on it. It's really nice on those claustrophobic levels where enemies like to control chokes, especially on those fucking lumbering things that have loads of energy since you're getting full value from your energy spent since they find it hard to get themselves from standing in the fire.
  3. This is a healing thing, which suddenly makes a whole lot of sense why the health pick ups in the game are so sporadic. A quick fire off of this fills up a set amount of points as well as making Oberon pulse which feed into anyone close enough to recovery the benefits to trickle health back in. It's nice as fuck. It even heals pets, which makes it even more desirable to the chip damage they seem to receive over the duration of a sortie.
  4. This is the same idea as Volts 4, Except all enemies within a radius of Oberon are flung up in the air and them slammed against the floor like that biotic skill in Mass Effect. Anything that dies has a chance to leave health orbs on the ground. Also nice as fuck, especially in those instances where everything is getting overwhelmed and the teams taking a bit of a fucking.

The biggest surprise between the frames is that it looks like they have difference stats between the mechanics behind their shooting. The ultra fast firing SMG like weapon I am currently using was like a laser beam in Volts hands, whereas the spread seems to be a bit more chaotic when Oberon is using it. I don't know if it's a case of me not having Oberon levelled up or whether different weapons get better performance from certain frames, but it's pretty interesting to note. I'll report back when I look into it further.

I have a Rhino frame that'll be ready soonish. It's going to be intriguing to see how that stands up to the other 2 I have. If it's totally different I'll be impressed. I've seen some other frames that I don't know the names of yet and they look really impressive. In fact you could level that at a lot of this game. It is an impressive package when you spend time with it.

Talking about spending time with the game, I've spent close to 2 days playing now. There's so much going on that I barely feel like I've scratched the surface.

Beat Earths boss tonight. Fuck me what a trail that was. I'm not going to spoil it in case anyone else jumps in, but they really need to lay off shit like that. You need to farm him for the Hydriod frame as well. I've seen that frame in action and it looks mad as fuck, so of course I want it. Not sure I want the 20 or 30 minutes battering the fuck out of him for a 1 in 3 chance to get the parts I'm missing for the build. It's given me a lot of respect for the people I've seen using it as well because it's a right old fuck about. I want those tentacle passives.

There's just so much to do in this game. I was just about to come off and the game pinged a message that there was a mission that would reward me a big chunk of credits and a alternate helmet style for Rhino so I went and did it.

It's the same loop Diablo has. You think you're done and then a message pops up and there's more shit to go kill and earn loot from.

And again with the Destiny comparisons. When you get on and you do the things, then you finishing the things there feels like there's no reason to play but you sort of do out of habit. Here that doesn't happen. Every moment you play you're going forwards, even if sometimes the game is unclear what forwards actually is.

EDIT: Actually that boss is only the second boss of the Grineer. There's 3 more bosses to kill of that faction. I wonder if they're going to be as mad as fuck like that one was.
