Broken Age

Could have sworn there was a thread for this game. Anyway Broken Age is of course the kickstarted traditional adventure game by Double Fine. You play as two characters, Shay and Vella, and you can switch between their story lines freely. The opening of the game hits all the right notes, the artwork is lovely, the dialogue is funny and engaging and overall the game is nicely reminiscent of those old 90s comedy adventures, without feeling overly retro. The tone is more family friendly than Sam and Max or Grim Fandango, probably due to the absence of a sadistically sarcastic narrator...

So far only the first half of the game has been released. The game starts off gently with no maddening pixel hunting, inventory spamming or dialogue exhausting required ...although there's plenty of time for all those I'm sure.

Vella's opening section is sweet and funny.

Shay's is a bit darker and weirder.

I've really enjoyed the first hour, and it runs perfectly which is a nice bonus. (Not surprising for a game that was also released on tablets I guess).

I said this in the completed games thread:

A couple of years of anticipation from following the awesome documentary could have lead to the game not living up to expectations, but I think it delivers. The presentation is great; the art style is lovely, and I've enjoyed the animation and voice acting a lot. The two storylines are entertaining (I enjoyed the boy's section more), and although being released in two parts is not ideal, this chapter ends on a great moment. It really throws a new light on what had just gone on.

Now I just want the second part to arrive as soon as possible.

Finished Act 1 after just over four hours. and I didn't have to consult a guide once, that might be a first! Four hours sounds decent for one half of an adventure game (if this is the first half), but it was a quick four hours. My initial impression was that this game would be similar in quality to the old 90s Lucas Arts games - it's not, but it's a nice game. Not worth €22.99 but recommended if you can pick it up in a sale.

There's not much to be said about it really. I played the opening half hour of each section, then played Shay's section through too its conclusion and then Vella's which brought me to the end. It will be interesting to see how much content is in Act 2. It's quite a light and breezy game really, generally speaking the art in each area is nice, the game has a nice Skyrim Skyward Sword style.

The second part is out on the 29th on PC (and the full game releases on PS4/Vita that day too). I played through the first act again today to prepare for it.

I really enjoyed seeing everything again with the perspective of knowing what the twist is.

I've just went to buy Act 2 on IPad. But the update unlocks it. :o

I would of happily paid another £8/9 for Act 2. I thought that was their plan? It's £20 on PS4. Still worth it if that's the only device you can play it on.

The making-of documentary is being released on youtube for free. The first three episodes are available now.

Theses are really good if you haven't watched them yet. Think it's up to episode 15 now.

Definite old school adventure feeling to the opening couple of hours of part 2. The puzzles appear to be chains, in that you learn what you need to do/get early and achieving it involves solving a number of smaller puzzles.

I've enjoyed the story reveals too, learning what was everyone thought was going and how it differs from what was actually happening.
