This being an arty-farty rant I have with some saying older games look "ugly"  on modern systems and ergo, need "remastered visuals". The problem is seeing a PSOne/N64 and prior, title on a modern console on an OLED/4K/Whatever TV. You're not even seeing them on the hardware they were built to be viewed with. Even those games that offer the CRT filter option isn't quite the same. It boils down to seeing these games with a resolution that even the original developer didn't have access to. That is making the game look not as designed or intended. Like a high resolution Bluray will highlight set or costume shortcomings in early black and white films.

I watch B&W films of bluray/4k on the regular and don't agree with that. We forget at times that those old 40s and 50s films were projected on 35mm film at detail levels which can even dwarf our modern technology (especially as a print can get damaged overtime, so our restored versions aren't perfect either) and that was how they were 'supposed' to be seen, not on a blurry VHS. I would say the lighting on those old films hides the things were talking of anyway

That said it is true that old games are designed for CRT. I used CRT shaders when emulating old games. Its good, but not really that close

I was talking about this with someone regarding the original FF7, the other day. Yes the models always looked funky. But the lack of clarity made the models clash less with the prerendered backgrounds (which looked very good via CRT).

I’ve actually come to appreciate that sharp pixel look. Something about it.

The pre rendered background thing though with the characters definitely “fit” more on CRT but I’ve also come to find the modern look quite endearing too.

The one I don’t like is PS2-modern upscales. It’s been mentioned a lot lately on Twitter for some reason and when you compare the character models on DMC, FFX, SH etc the old PS2 versions look waaaaay better!

There is something very specific about PS2 and Dreamcast graphics that I find too charming to need upscaling. 32bit, 64bit I can see why some would want the muddier textures cleaned up a little on modern TV's. But I don't think it necessary for the gens beyond N64.

I'm a cool guy with the print version and will tell you if this also glows in the dark.

I've been subscribed for a bunch of years now. They can have a bit of a stick up their butt at times, but they have super interesting in-depth articles about the industry and also tend to highlight lesser-known games in their preview section (because nobody needs a preview for CoD). Plus I think it's genuinely cool that a videogame magazine from the 90s is still around.

Cool piece of art I saw on Twitter

Y’know it’s probably a few years away but I’d say there’s a really solid chance of getting a Metroid movie after Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong

I think, what kind of Metroid film will be entirely dependent on how well Zelda is done. I would think Animation best suited for Metroid. But I thought that was a no-brainer for Zelda too. Yet we don't live in that timeline, so who knows?

There will be an Animal Crossing and Splatoon movie before Metroid, it's so small time compared to other Nintendo games.

Plus it already has a massive Alien inspiration.  It'd be like the Uncharted movie.  I'd just be interested in it if they went really Flash Gordon with it.

You’re right about Splatoon & Animal Crossing @HandsomeDead but I still think it’s a real possibility.

I don’t think you’re right about it not being made/good just because it’s inspired by Alien. The problem with Uncharted is it’s basically knock-off Indiana Jones x Die Hard. Which in video games is unique. But in movies it’s just a knock-off

But Metroid is not as 1:1 as that.

A potential Metroid film will also hinge on the antagonist. Kraid.. wouldn't work. Ridley: should he speak or not? Mother Brain. Which kind of depiction: humanised or not?

Spoiler
