Saints Row 4

I don't think there's a thread for this, either everyone who bought it posted in the SR3 thread or no one played it. Either way it's free on steam this weekend (added to your library) and so far it's pretty good.

There's loads of systems in it now, I'm not entirely sure how they're all earned. You still level up to some extent but it doesn't really affect anything, you need to buy the stuff you unlock so you need money, by the time you've got enough for anything you've levelled up any way. You've also got super powers, powering these up uses some other currency that I always seem to have loads of, not sure how I'm getting it unless it's collecting the orbs dotted around the city, but while you might have 50 of them, a new move will cost 15 or 25.

It always surprises me how linear the Saints Row games are at the start, it's a fair amount of time before you get to just wander the city doing what you want, and it's worth staying on that path a bit so you get the super powers, which makes everything else easier. The game feels a bit tighter too, the gunplay is better than I remember it being, the platforming works ok considering, it's a well made game so far

Looking at the games completed thread, I think possibly only me and Bob played it. I mostly post at work from my phone so posting up an impressions thread is difficult in terms of time & difficulty. I don't know what Bob's excuse is.

You're right, the powers are upgraded with the clusters (those orbs). There are more around than you need, so upgrading is easy.

I loved the dumb plot and the superpowers, it makes getting around so much fun. The non-storyline quests are worth doing because they tend to award you with upgraded powers, weapons and abilities. They're a little odd in that they're usually just doing a bunch of the activities around the map. What's nice is that if you do one of those activities while just messing around in the game, it will be already marked as completed when you do the sidequest.

Dog ate it.

I loved it. I loved all the knowing immaturity and the slightly less knowing immaturity. The gameplay was super fun and a lot of the time I felt like I was playing Crackdown with more swears and pixelated nudity. The super run and jump made vehicles pretty much obsolete which is a shame because there were some really cool ones but ultimately, you could run faster than any vehicle and jump up skyscrapers so it was a fair trade.

It was also refreshing to see the game still set in Steelport. There is always this attitude that new is automatically going to be better and I read a few negative reviews that complained about them reusing the city, but I thought it felt fresh yet familiar and I enjoyed exploring it all over again. The orb clusters and being able to dick about in the city with super powers also fixed one of my problem with the series so far. The fact that outside missions there wasn't really anything rewarding to do other than 'sploding people.

No game is perfect though the the character creation didn't seem to have any more options than previous games. I love that you can make yourself a transgender, fat Asian woman in bondage gear. But in terms of outfits, I don't think there was more than a handful of new gear from Saints Row 3. Until the weekly DLC started of course. So it is very easy to be cynical about such a cynical practice. However, I pretty much just imported my character from SR3 and got a new hair cut so even if there were more options, I probably wouldn't have used them. Just grumble and stuff.

I think I said in the completed games section that it was about as much fun as I have ever had with a game. That still stands. I admire their design philosophy of giving the player everything cool upfront and letting you play with it and it is surprising how little that messes with the pacing of the game. I think within a couple of hours of playing you have super jump, telekinesis and a tank at your disposal. Which is pretty boss.

Also. I know the game gets a lot of flack for being so immature, especially in previous games with having pornstars all over the place. I would even agree that the game is incredibly childish but there is nothing inherently wrong with that. This and Borderlands are very similar where if you look a bit deeper there is a load of stuff in there about sexuality, grief, friendship and other more mature themes. It also makes no judgements on the player based on gender, race or sexual orientation. I think the game is saying a lot more than people give it credit for and I love that there is absolutely no need to think about any of it to enjoy the game.

End game spoiler.

The bit between Kieth David and Roddy Piper was amazing as well :D

Absolutely loved this game, it was proper mental. The car customisation stuff was pointless, because once I levelled up my running/jumping powers, I never touched a car again. No need, when you could boost around at 90 miles an hour, Crackdown style. The story was completely ridiculous, and all the better for that.I had more fun playing this than all the time I tried to enjoy GTA online.

It's hard to see where they could take the series from here. But here's hoping they pull it out of the bag.

yeah, admittedly I have no real connection to the Saints, having only played 3 and 4 but it wouldn't be the worst thing if they started over. That said the game has basically turned in to a 3rd person shooter now so maybe it makes sense to just carry on making the most ridiculous thing they can

I've enjoyed 4, not as much as 3 I don't think, and I think that might be because I'm still Saints Row'ed out. Other than climb the towers and destroy the occupied things I ended up avoiding pretty much all the side missions bar the ones that got me something decent. There's still loads left in the city to do, there's a stack of actual side quests to do, there's statues to shoot and orbs to find, but I'm done. I still spent 20 hours with it in the past few days so it's still a full game, and it's mostly fun.

I was impressed how well it held up too. There's stuff blowing up all over the place, I'm dragging things behind me while I run, but I didn't notice any hitching. Granted part of that will be my pc, but their engine does a really good job of coping or hiding that it isn't

I'm almost hoping they go back to their gangster roots with the next game....

I personally couldn't think of anything worse, but I think we've been through that before on another Saint's Row thread.

I think I may have enjoyed SR3 more, possibly just because I played it first, but had a great time with 4.

They've kind of backed themselves into a corner with the story of SR4, so any sequel would probably have to either get even stranger or be a reboot.

I got this cheap on PSN and played a few hours of it last night. The intro bit with the nuke was inspired, and i've spent more time than I should admit to running around shooting people into the sky with the anal probe launcher.

Soundtrack's good as well! So far, well worth the £11 I paid for it.

Surprised this never made it to 2 pages.

I had half an hour before work to play something, so thought I’d check out the opening again.

Yup, still great!

Especially love the ‘50’s sitcom bit before setting up the premise of the game.
