Terraria

I bought this game on the cheap last week on Steam - like two bucks and some change. I started playing it today and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I created my character Sir Shotgun Jackson and so far he has drown, got mauled by a bunny, and a killed by blob with an umbrella. If fact the only thing I really know how to do in this game is chop down trees and dig holes in the ground, but I can't even do that becuase everything in the Kingdom of Terraria want to kill me - even the fucken bunnies. What the fuck did Sir Shotgun do to have fucken bunnies ploting to kill him!! Birds fly by and then decide to turn around to come back an peck at Sir. Shotgun!!!

Like I said I only spent around two buck on it, so I'll give it a bit longer. If I still can't figure Terraria out I'll just uninstall and move on.

Put some more time into Terraria. It was pissing rain ingame and the monsters are assholes, so I figured out I could use the logs and dirt blocks to make a barricade. Spent the rest of the time digging out a shelter. It's pretty fun game .... Iike a 2D Mincraft, but with asshole baddies.

Found a really great series of Let's Play videos that explained a lot about how to properly play Terraria. Did some more mining last night and now have a massive network of mine shafts. Next up I'm going to build a proper shelter, which in hindsight I should have done first if I knew what I was doing.

Put some more time tonight into Terraria. Have a three story stone home with a basement that I hollowed out the incased in stone to stop the vegetation from growing. So far I've hit stone quarry mother load after stone quarry mother load. Hopefully this good luck does not end soon as I need more stone to finish building what will be a pretty big castle.

Been looking on the interwebs to see if there is a way to keep the hockey masked zombie from open my door to attack me. The other zombies just knock or run into the door over an over again, but the hockey masked ones are a bit smarter.

Last night I expanded my home to three new rooms. One of the rooms acts a a bridge across a gap. Then I turned the gap into a room and might use it to store more treasure chests.

I also forged a iron sowrd and pumpkin armor for Sir. Shotgun Jackson. The iron sword does a good job at kocking back and making short work of zombies. I also found out that the reason that zombies can come into your home is due to it being a blood moon. To stop them from doing that on blood moons just craft a chair and prop it up against the door.

Now I need to drain a lake so I can mine a massive tin and stone deposit I found to the eastside of Sir. Shotgun's home.

Today I decided to start up Terraria again. Instead of using my old map I decided to generate a new one. My spawn point was in the middle of snow and ice, but it was pretty flat terrain, so I lucked out there. Have some crafting tools up anvil, workbench and furnace. Minerals like copper and iron seem to be abundant. Zombies have not been that big of an issue ether. Really lucked out with this map.

I've got this, in theory I should love it. In practice, who knows?

Spoilers: I sort of grew to hate this fucking game. It started out so well too, but the difficulty and the lack of guidance really spat on my cock.

I am actually really surprised this thread isn't really long, as this is the sort of darling people get all frothy about. It has all the hallmarks of a lot of you guys enjoying it, and I think you should try it if you can. Just be aware that the game doesn't give a fuck about you and your happiness and will happily fuck up your life and ruin your day with stuff that's completely out of your hands.

For reference this game is about spelunking for treasures that you can bring back to the surface and craft with. If you build a house NPC's move in that can act as guides and service providers to whatever they specialise in. Hit certain milestones within game and bosses spawn. Beat the bosses and loot them and craft better gear that allows you to go further afield. There's certainly nothing wrong with this logic. It's a nice loop.

The thing that really lets it down is the difficulty. If you're not geared up, or cannot gear up because you need whatever is bending you over, then you're shit out of luck. You can only prepare so much and it's frustrating as fuck to go the whole nine yards to get bent over and gangbanged into the afterlife, especially when you're spawn trapped and the monsters are one shotting you. More annoyingly, if you die a lot in an area you leave a headstone, which can contribute to making the area you died in a graveyard biome which spawns more monsters to fuck you life with.

The thing is, once you get 1 step above these monster on the loot table, they become nothing but minor inconveniences. I just wish they'd smoothed the numbers a bit more so you didn't have such a jump in power, it all seems a bit silly really. Even beating the boss with his own loot becomes sort of trivial.

I wanted to love Terraria a lot more than I ended up doing. Sure, it's a good game, but don't be fooled by all the praise. It can be a cunt needlessly. For all the moments you enjoy, there's be at least 1 or 2 that make you question why you're bothering with this shit. If you're going to play, I'd recommend playing with someone who knows what they're doing (not me), or having a wiki open right next to you that details what you should be going for, because otherwise you're in for a lot of trail and error, trail and error that's going to lead to a lot of misery.
