radiofloyd
Might as well make a thread for this so I can talk about it. It's a first-person point and click horror-adventure game that was released in 2010. Basically you open drawers and light candles (and throw books around). The game is set in an old castle and is very atmospheric, as you would expect. Your character has a sanity meter which will affect your vision if you hang around in the darkness too long, so light plays an important part in the game. I haven't encountered any monsters yet but still I've been closing all the doors when I'm exploring a room, just to be safe... So far the story has been delivered through diaries and letters which I've found scattered around the place. First-person works really well for adventure games. It's a shame this type of thing is a genre that's pretty much confined to the indies. But at least we're seeing more of them.
radiofloyd
Nah this game is too scary for me, there's no way I could persevere though the whole thing.

radiofloyd
What was your breaking point? It was more the way the game plays than anything else. I didn't even reach the first monster appearance (as it happens, I had played right up to it, which probably says something about how well designed the game is). The pattern of play is that you are exploring, you hear a roar from somewhere, then you have to hide. I looked at some youtube videos and I could see the game mapped out in front of me and I thought "ah fuck it". Although now I kind of regret uninstalling it because maybe I would have gotten used to it...I think I'm going to re-install it and play on a bit longer. I feel it's too good a game to abandon, so I'm going to give it one more go.
radiofloyd
I made some progress. Passed the first enemy appearance and I have the solution of acid which allows me to dissolve the weird gooey shit. It kept my save file even though it doesn't have the steam cloud symbol. radiofloyd
Making good progress, I've cleared the Refinery, Cellar Archives and Archive Tunnels areas and now I seem to have come to another hub area of the castle, the Back Hall. File is 4 hours long now.
DANGERMAN
I played a bit of Amnesia as a 30 minute trial with onlive, I didn't like the having to get light mechanic (I never do really), I get why it's there I just think it gets in the way. Anyway I think I got to the bit you did in your 3rd post, heard a roar, braced myself, went to push on, and the trial ended and booted me from the game
Hendo
I keep trying to get into it but it's not the horror that puts me off, more that I'd rather be playing it with a pad (I think the sequel has pad support) and that I end up feeling lost and not knowing where I have to go. I'd quite to play a game that proper makes me poo myself - this seems to have people saying they can't play it for that reason. I want those scares! Outlast looks pretty similar. Have you watched the Outlast Quick Look that Patrick put together? He is genuinely freaked out come the end. I don't think I could play it. Nor this. Hendo
I started watching it, decided I was gonna buy it at some point and didn't want any of it spoiled for me.

I thought the trailer on steam looks more scary than that quick look, but I think it's because it looks a different game in the trailer, faster
radiofloyd
Yeah I'll definitely be playing Outlast, although I'm more excited for A Machine for Pigs and Asylum. I have to say so far Amnesia really is not that bad (scare wise I mean, it's an excellent game!). The worst part is the first hour or so, where you are waiting for the game to scare the bejeesus out of you. However I feel like the game has stepped up in intensity now. I'm in an area called Storage and it's definitely more intense than anything up to this point.
radiofloyd
Luckily my laptop seems to be half-surviving. If I load steam up straight away it doesn't crash. I'm the only one in my house with a laptop that has a dedicated graphics card so I was starting to get worried... I've made some good progress in this. I've cleared all areas linked to the Back Hall and now I've taken the elevator down into the Prison...
radiofloyd
13 months later...came back to this today. I cleared the first area of the prison where you exit through a tunnel under someone's bed. It's really not that creepy unless you are trying to scare yourself (e.g. by playing with headphones). After a while you will just start saying to hell with it and explore at a decent pace. And I wouldn't consider myself particularly brave! One good feature in the game is that if a monster kills you, he actually disappears the next time which allows you to progress freely. I'm not sure if this happens all the time but I've noticed it a couple of times.
radiofloyd
In The Cistern now, playtime 9 hours. I think a lot of people (myself included) would have the wrong impression of Amnesia from the opening few hours or from watching youtube trailers. The game is really a straight up point and click adventure. Monster avoidance plays a tiny part in it, and hiding in closets even less so. I think I hid in a closet once in the whole game and that was forced by the story. Likewise things like managing your sanity and health play a small to non-existent part in the game. Instead it's just a really good 3D point and click adventure, and I can't think of many of those. The puzzles are very gentle and generally just require you to explore each area fully to find items that will allow you progress. Obviously The Walking Dead has shaken up the genre in its own way but I'd love to see a non-horror point and click adventure in the style of Amnesia. radiofloyd
In the morgue now, it's the area with all the roses and puppies. I got stuck a couple of times in the cistern area. Once where you are supposed to lower a bridge by throwing a rock at it (I didn't spot the conveniently placed rocks which are an obvious clue until after I read the solution), and secondly in lowering the eastern bridge. To lower the bridge you have to complete a set of puzzles in an adjoining area. I thought I had completed them correctly and was convinced the game was glitching on me...but of course as usual in adventure games, it's not the game, it's you. Turns out I hadn't completed one of the puzzles. That deep rumbling sound that indicates "problem solved" must have been all in my head. The cistern was a bit of downtime though after all the monsters in the previous areas. I'm expecting the game to crank up the horror again... Over 11 hours now.
