15 more games greenlit today:

Satellite Reign and The Novelist were the only two I was looking forward to. Still, I guess that moves everything else 15 places closer to the top. And the list of impressive/interesting games that have been greenlit is getting quite long now.

This is a pretty rad idea. Especially for co-op games, playing the with the waifu or spawn for the cost of one game.

EDIT: Looks like one purchase can only be played by one person at a time. I'm sure you could circumvent it by playing in offline mode or whatever in some cases. Still a rad idea though, if only to let others demo a game without buggering up your progress.

The fact that Steam requires you to pop online once every few weeks is a bug rather than intentional design according to an official forum response spotted by Blue's News. "There are many components involved in Offline Mode," writes Valve poster Henryg, "some of them have known issues and bugs which we are continually working to improve. We're aware that it doesn't always work as flawlessly as we want it to, but please keep reporting bugs with Offline Mode. It is not broken 'by design'."

He also mentions that Valve are in the process of converting every game on Steam to a new authentication procedure. "Some day soon, once this work is completed, we will eliminate the old authentication system (represented by the ClientRegistry.blob file) and Offline Mode should immediately become much more robust."

Steam's offline mode has never worked quite correctly, to the irritation of many, including the OP on this forum thread. The poster works five week shifts offshore, but can't access Steam games for more than a couple of weeks because of the impromptu online authorisation issue. Henryg suggests that "Offline Mode is designed to be indefinite. You can't access any of Steam's online features such as friends lists or saved game synchronization, of course, but the client should allow you to run in Offline Mode for as long as you like."

A fix is on the way then, but why have Valve kept it so quiet? Henryg says "We have no community managers or PR people, so all the time that we spend on forums is taking away from development time." Ah, I see. well in that case GET BACK TO WORK HENRYG.

Steam have added user reviews:

Valve has added a section to Steam to allow for user reviews.

Currently in beta, this feature allows users to rate any title they've played, as well as give feedback on other users' reviews.

If you find a user whose reviews you enjoy or agree with, you can follow that particular person's review portfolio and check out their take on other titles as well.

Valve noted in its FAQ that these reviews won't create an overall score or rating for a title yet, but it's looking into adding that feature during the beta. "Many products on Steam change significantly over time as the game or software is updated and new content is added. In order to form a score that accurately reflects the current state of a product, we first need to gather and evaluate the data from reviews," Valve explained.

Steam users will be able to write a review of any game they've launched and it will say next to their review how many hours they've put into it.

Since Steam games are often updated, the latest reviews for a title will be shown first to most accurately reflect a product in its current state.

For more information, check out Valve's announcement page dedicated to this new service.

I got in to the in-home streaming beta. It's kind of part of the same initiative as the Steam Box, as in it's the way to play games in the living room. They run on your main pc then streams over your router to another, less powerful pc.

I wrote a piece about it for http://bitparade.co.uk/article.php?id=3278'>Bitparade, and there's a video too... which isn't exactly great quality

as you can see from the video there's not a lot of lag there, it's not like you can see it obviously with the naked eye. It is more noticeable in the controls, mainly Batman, but it's certainly better than Onlive when I tried that. The bigger problem is that it's inconsistent, you aren't guaranteed to get a stream of any set framerate, meaning that for no reason (because it's not about what's happening in game) the controls will suddenly let you down. There's also judder, moments where the game is still running fine on the main pc, but the stream just hangs. It can last a relatively long time too, we're talking less than a second, but it does impact gameplay pretty severely

It seems like dropping the resolution down reduces the judder, and gives you a better framerate, but given that you're talking 1080, 720, or 480, you've not got a lot of scope to find a sweet spot of keeping the game looking good and being responsive
